The essentials of staff management: a two day intensive course

london: Thursday 22 – Friday 23 May 2014 Thursday 25 – Friday 26 September 2014

09:30 – 16:30 (registration from 09:00)

People management skills are not necessarily something you think about when you set out in a career in dentistry. Progression into a senior position, whether a dentist or DCP, can bring the responsibility of managing members of staff, which can often be a challenging and time consuming part of the role, especially when your progression has been on the merit of your clinical achievement rather than your managerial experience.

This comprehensive two day course will provide new managers with the fundamental skills needed to succeed and will also refresh the skills of existing managers, providing updated tools and techniques to use in this ever changing industry.

By the end of the course you will:

• know how to select and recruit the right people for the job• appreciate how to manage yourself as 'the manager'• gain leadership skills and understand different leadership styles to suit you and

your team• know how to manage staff performance; providing support and giving feedback• be able to review staff development through effective appraisals• understand the importance of clear, two way communication and how to embed it

in your team.

Develop and deliver a performance appraisal system tailor made for your practicelondon: Friday 4 July 201409:30 – 16:30 (registration from 09:00)Performance appraisals are not only essential to keep your practice CQC compliant and up to date with CPD requirements but are also vital for business success. CQC has had a huge impact upon the dental industry with their uncertain outcomes and ‘forced change effects’ causing emotional ructions for staff: confusion, defensiveness, resentment and burn out. The process of applying performance appraisal is often misunderstood and neglected. However, if appropriately conducted, this crucial management tool can actually bring the whole practice together and generate a positive reaction from team members.

Effective performance appraisal can inspire all staff to buy into organisational aims and values, reinforce organisational commitment and motivate improved performance for support staff as well as for dentists. This interactive workshop will show you how.

By the end of the course you will:

• understand what a performance appraisal (PA) system is and the benefits of this to your practice

• recognise the motivational value of PA as well as complying with CQC• have developed a tailor made PA system that would suit your practice • have acquired essential skills to enable your practice to conduct PA effectively.

Participation in this workshop includes a complimentary follow up visit to confirm successful implementation of your performance appraisal system should you find additional guidance of use.
