Have you ever thought of being a Personal Assistant? Would you like to see being a Health Champion as something that might lead into paid work? The Health Champion training means you are well on the way to undertaking the training needed to be a Personal Assistant A Personal Assistant (PA) is someone who supports people who want to stay in their own homes when it has become difficult to live independently, through illness, frailty or disability. Aspects of Personal Assistant role:

Flexibility – you can work from a few hours a week up to working full time hours

You may just work for one or two people on a regular basis or work for lots of people with various needs

You may be self-employed or directly employed by the person you provide care for. And some circumstances possibly living in the home of your employer

The role is varied depending on what the client needs and what you offer. It can include domestic tasks, shopping, cleaning, ironing, helping with paperwork, offering transportation, helping to maintain a garden and personal support such as helping to wash and dress.

East Sussex County Council offers an accredited scheme for PAs called Support with Confidence. They interview applicants to ensure they offer a high quality service and complete a number of checks including the DBS certification. As part of the accreditation process applicants attend training in Food Hygiene, Medication, First Aid, Moving and Handling and Business. There are many benefits to becoming an approved Support with Confidence PA, these include the opportunity to advertise your services on the East Sussex website and across East Sussex Adult Social Care and Health Services. You also have access to ongoing support and advice. If this sounds of interest talk to Megan, Health and Wellbeing Development Worker at Sussex Community Development Association - 01273 516032 and she can tell you more about being put in touch with Support with Confidence at East Sussex County Council.

Couch to 5K Want to get fit while making friends? Want to achieve something new?

We would like to start a ‘Couch to 5K’ running group/course in Newhaven with a ‘graduation’ run of 5K at the new Peacehaven ParkRun (a free, 5K fun run every Saturday morning at 9 a.m.). Any old trainers will do and any comfortable clothes…and it doesn’t matter if you’ve never run before or haven’t exercised in a long time. Time and day to be decided… first we need to see if Newhaven is interested! We’ll follow a Couch to 5K app, which starts very gently and works up slowly over two or three months to get to 5K.

This can be a self-managed group, but if you are an experienced and knowledgeable runner who would like to volunteer your time for about an hour a week to lead the group, we would love to hear from you. Please call 01273 516032 or email: [email protected]

We have a Couch to 5K Facebook page - “SCDA Couch to 5K Newhaven”

Cooking to save your life 4 week course, possibly extended to 6 weeks – starting late October/early Nov – exact dates and times to be confirmed and advertised at a later time. You are welcome to register your interest now. ‘Even just getting in the kitchen is gonna help your overall health. It’s really that easy.’ - Thug Kitchen 2016 Every little bit of time spent preparing food at home will reap rewards for your health. In this course we’ll explore the main reasons why people don’t cook – usually ‘I haven’t got the time!’ or “I don’t like cooking!” or “It’s too expensive!” We’ll go over practical tips to make it easier and more enjoyable, show how to budget when in the supermarket, build up your stock cupboard so that cooking becomes the cheaper option, small steps you can take to gradually ease yourself into confident cooking, healthy lifestyle principles, basic healthy eating guidelines, the health implications of eating convenience foods and the huge benefits of cooking to your health and wellbeing. We will also cook some simple, healthy dishes to take home and in one or two sessions healthy snacks will be provided rather than cooked. We will make health pledges at the beginning… one small thing we will do to improve our health throughout the course and inspirational quote will be given out at each session. Any level of experience is welcome.
