CourseDescription:ThiscourseintroducesstudentstotheintellectualfoundationsofWesternCivilizationandthestudyofthehumanities.ItsurveysthemajorideasthatdominateWesternCivilizationfromtheancienttothemodernworld,providingstudentswithanoutlineofmajorhistoricalmovementsofthoughtandanencounterwithsomeoftheprincipalworksofphilosophy,religion,literature,arts,andhistorythatformtheWesternintellectualtradition.Itprovidesstudentswiththeconceptsneededtosucceedinthecoursesthatmakeupthehumanitiesportionofgeneraleducationcorecurriculum.LearningStrategies:Question-and-answersessions,mini-lectures,reading,listeningtomusic,lookingatvisualarts(includingarchitecture),watchingfilmedperformances,andengaginginplannedandspontaneousdiscussion.ExperientialLearningOpportunities:Individualresearchprojectandpresentation.LinkedClasses:N/AGradingScale:

TheMidtermwillcoverallofthematerialuptothatpointinthesemester.TheFinalwillonlycoverthematerialsincethemidterm;inotherwordsitisnotcumulative.Bothwillborrowheavilyfromthequizzes,somaintainingparticipationandnotesthroughoutthesemesteriscrucialtoperformingwellonthemajorexams.TheTermProjectconsistsoftwomajorcomponents:ashortessayand3-5minuteclasspresentation.Theprojectwillcenteronaworkofyourchoosingfromoneoftheperiodswearediscussinginclass.Itcannotbeaworkwearealreadyusingintheclass,thoughIwillprovidealistofpossibleworksforyoutoconsider.Youcan,ofcourse,choosesomethingnotfeaturedonthelist,butinthatcaseyoushouldclearitwithme.Nooneshouldbedoingthesamework,andtherewillbealimitonstudentsperperiod(4max).YouwillbeabletosignupbyMondaySeptember28th.Iwillpassoutafullrubricforthisassignmentinthethirdweek,butyoushouldalreadybeconsideringwhicherasandworksyouwouldliketofocuson.Therewillbe50pointsforeachcomponentoftheProject.
