Course Description
Business Mathematics presents math skills and knowledge that students can apply to solve
financial problems. The course provides step-by-step guidance through sample problems and
solutions related to banking, credit, basic finance and investment. Students will also gain an
understanding of financial instruments and terminology used in business finance such as
compound interest, annuities and promissory notes. The course will cover topics like:
elements of Algebra; functions and their graphs; ratios, proportions and percentages; interest
and annuities; differentiation, optimization, and integration.
Course Objectives
The course of Business Mathematics is designed to introduce students to the basic
mathematical skills you will need to understand, analyze, and solve mathematical problems
encountered in business and finance, and in investment decision making.
1. Apply arithmetic and algebraic skills to everyday business problems
2. Use ratio, proportion and percent in the solution of business problems.
3. Solve business problems involving commercial discount, markup, markdown, and annuities.
4. Solve equations graphically and algebraically and apply to cost volume profit analysis.

Class Requirements
Class attendance and participation.
Students are expected to attend the class on a regular basis, faithfully complete all assignmentsand readings on the dates assigned, and actively participate in class activities and discussions.
Your grade on class participation is something to be earned via consistent contribution to class
discussion. You should, therefore, make conscientious efforts to be sufficiently prepared to the
class discussions. The responsibility for making the learning process succeed is yours. The
faculty requires students to attend at minimum 80% of the scheduled class sessions. Attendance
that is less than this requirement will make you not eligible for obtaining the grade.
