LOCATION All enrichment classes and K-8 academic classes will be held at John Long Middle School. Early Childhood , Kindergarten Readiness and Safety Town classes will be held at Woodview Elementary School. All high school classes will be at Grafton High School.

REGISTRATION Registration opens on March 23. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and registrations are entered randomly by date received. Any registration forms received early will be held until March 23 and then entered randomly. Registration forms and payment may be mailed or dropped off in person at the District Office, 1900 Washington Street, Grafton. Registration ends on May 19.

DAILY ROUTINE Parents are asked to bring their pre-K through grade 5 students to the JLMS All Pur-pose Room (cafeteria) for their first class. Pre-K students will then be escorted to and from Woodview Ele-mentary for their classes. When your child’s summer school day is over, please plan on picking up him/her from the JLMS All Purpose Room. If you plan on having your child walk home, please inform the summer school teacher or principal.

TRANSPORTATION/DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES No transportation is provided for summer learning. Parents must make arrangements for timely drop-off and pick-up. Parents of young stu-dents (pre-K to grades 3) should park in the east lot of JLMS and use door #3 for entrance and exit to and from summer school. Older students may be picked up or dropped off in front of JLMS.

FEES Some courses have a class fee for supplies. Fees indicated in this brochure are for Grafton school district residents. Additional charges apply for non-resident students. For information on non-resident student fees, contact the Summer School office at (262) 376-5407. If a student drops a class after the start of summer school, fees will not be refunded. A $20 fee will be charged for checks returned due to insuffi-cient funds.

REFUNDS Refunds will be given for classes canceled by the district due to staff availability or student enrollment.

CLASS SIZE The district reserves the right to limit the number of students in a class or to cancel any classes in which student enrollment is too low.

NEW THIS YEAR The district is pleased to offer new courses from our RISE (Reaching Individual Student Excellence) program. These courses are academically rigorous and require strong math and critical think-ing skills. They are designated in the course descriptions with the RISE logo. Students already identified for the RISE program will have priority registration for these classes.

Learn the basics of guitar playing with an exposure to all genres of music. Students are encouraged (but not required)to bring their own guitar to class.

BEGINNING ACTING - INTRODUCTION TO THE SHOW Grades 5-8 (currently)

Students will role-play and get an introduction to the fall’s mid-dle school musical. Stage direction, movement, and improvisa-tion are key elements in this class of fun and creativity! The skills and techniques taught during the class will instill the con-fidence and positive thinking needed in order to succeed in the world of acting. The course will culminate with performances at local retirement communities to bring the joy of our craft to the community.

Express yourself in fun and creative ways while improving your reading and writing skills. We will be exploring poetry, mem-oirs, biographies, autobiographies, short stories, and other types of creative writing.

GRADES 5-8 ENRICHMENT CLASSES

INTRODUCTION TO STRENGTH, SPEED AND CONDITIONING Current grades 5-6 only

This course is designed to introduce young athletes to strength, speed, agility, and conditioning training. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals of movement for speed and agility, body weight training, and cardiovascular training.

BEGINNING STRENGTH, SPEED AND CONDITIONING Current grades 7-8 only

Designed for student athletes with little or no prior knowledge or experience in the development of strength, speed, agility and flexibility. This course will place emphasis on the introduc-tion of body weight, free weight exercises, Olympic lifts, flexibil-ity and speed/agility training, as well as an introduction to ath-letic nutrition and principles of rest and recovery. Male and female athletes may sign up for this course. Regular attend-ance is required.

CROSS COUNTRY JUMP START Grades 5-8 (currently)

Get a head start on this year’s cross country season by joining Coach Zellner and Coach Dimmer for preseason training. We’ll start with a warm-up, do some distance or interval training, and finish with a cool-down and stretching.

This is your chance to write the news and create your own newscast. A variety of news formats may be used (e.g., all news, sports, weather, etc.). Students will upload and edit our news for family and friends to view.

Show off your Google skills! Learn from fellow Googlers! Go beyond “docs” and discover lots of great apps that work within Google Chrome. This class will give you the opportunity to ex-plore all that Google has to offer.

INTRODUCTION TO GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING Grades 5-8 (currently)

Plan out garden spaces, discover different types of plants, and learn how to successfully maintain gardens. You will have the unique opportunity to brighten up the JLMS property with beautiful plants.

INTRODUCTION TO GOLF Current grades 6 -8 only

This class is an introduction to the game of golf. Classes will be at Edgewater Golf Course in Grafton. Students will need to provide their own transportation to and from the course. In-struction will include reviewing the basic fundamentals such as grip, posture, ball position, and short game. Students will play a round (9 holes) at the end of the two week class. The round will cost $5 per student. The class is taught by Mr. Trottier, varsity boys golf coach at Grafton High School. All ability levels are welcome. Class will not be held on days with inclement weather such as rain and thunderstorms.

Course # LGOLF Session B Current 6th and 7th grade students: 9:00 -10:30 Current 8th grade students: 10:30 - 12:00 Edgewater Golf Course Fee: Students will need to pay the $5 fee on the last day of class at Edgewater. Transportation: Students must provide their own transportation to Edgewater.

MINECRAFT: GAMIFY YOUR LEARNING! Grades 5-8 (currently)

Students will use Minecraft and/or other software to create educational games and true-to-life models.

MUSICAL SCENERY DESIGN Grades 5-8 (currently)

We will be painting the colorful backdrops and props for the JLMS fall musical.

MUSICAL SET DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION Grades 5-8 (currently)

Students will design and then construct scenic elements and set pieces for the JLMS fall musical production. Based on the needs of the show, students will develop designs for the pieces needed. Students in the class will be listed in the actual pro-gram for the show in the fall as the "Set Construction" team.

This is an introductory course for incoming 6th grade students. We will cover many first week concerns like lockers, lunch, the layout of the school, library, and the important people you need to know. Grading, computer usage and applications, ex-pectations, and study skills will all be covered, along with an-swering all your questions about 6th grade!

SAFETY TOWN TEACHING ASSISTANTS Grades 6-8 (currently)

Student volunteers are needed as teaching assistants for the preschool Safety Town classes. Safety Town promotes posi-tive safety skills by providing lessons on topics such as riding on a bus, crossing the street, wearing seat belts, poison awareness and fire safety. Safety Town is presented by the Grafton Police Department in conjunction with the Grafton Summer Learning Academy. As volunteer instructors, students will assist the teacher and police officer and can earn volun-teer hours. Volunteers will be responsible for approximately four students in the class.

SUMMER SING Grades 5-8 (currently)

If you love to sing, come explore an array of singing styles in this summer course. Under the guidance of Mr. Arendt (JLMS Choir director), you will develop your skills and knowledge of musical styles, including pop, jazz, gospel, and folk. Students will sing a cappella, in small ensembles, and in a large group. The course will culminate with performances at local retirement communi-ties to bring the joy of our music to the community.

TABLE TENNIS FEVER Grades 5-8 (currently)

Come and learn the fun and competitive game of table tennis. We will discuss the rules of singles and doubles play and learn not only the basics, but also work on game strategies and differ-ent paddle techniques. While serving in the military, Mr. Arendt spent a year in Korea where table tennis is a national pastime. He will share the techniques that he learned and will have you catching Table Tennis Fever!
