AN AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY WITH AN INTERNATIONAL FEEL

The University of Canberra is a young, up-and-coming university located in Australia’s national capital. We enjoy a rich and diverse campus culture with over 4,500 international students from over 107 different countries.

We are increasingly recognised as one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions, as we continue to reach new heights in world rankings and further our influence regionally, nationally and internationally.

The University of Canberra is ranked in the top four per cent of universities in the world by both, the 2015-16 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings. We were also listed among the top 100 universities in the world under the age of 50 in 2015.

Our researchers are committed to delivering breakthroughs that address real-world problems and collaborate with national and international partners to deliver outstanding research both locally and globally.

The University is proud of its academic, professional and personal support systems. We deliver a professional education focused on equipping students with the skills they need to hit the ground running in their careers.

Our strong emphasis on work-integrated learning gives our more than 17,500 students the opportunity for valuable experience in the workplace before they graduate.

University of Canberra graduates are in high demand and many of our alumni occupy senior positions in public and private enterprise in Australia and around the world.

We are a vibrant, friendly campus and we have embarked on big plans for the future. Over the next 10-15 years, our campus will be transformed into a series of precincts, focusing on growing national and international partnerships and transformational research and learning. Developments include the new University of Canberra Public Hospital, an aged care facility, a cancer care centre and an innovation park. These facilities are being integrated into teaching and research, providing exciting new opportunities for the University to serve its community.

Our campus is a reflection of our city, Canberra, rated the best city in the world to live in by the OECD in 2014, and among the top 20 in the world by QS Best Student Cities. With its four distinct seasons, safe and clean environment, multiculturalism and youthful population, Canberra has cemented its place as Australia’s education capital.

I invite you to explore our accomplishments, our facilities, our campus and most of all, our bold vision for the future.

I hope you choose to start on, or continue your career path with the University of Canberra.

I look forward to personally welcoming you to our campus.

Professor Deep Saini Vice-Chancellor and President

Canberra is a unique place. It is the capital of Australia and as you’d expect from a city whose inhabitants run one of the world’s top 20 economies, it’s vibrant and cosmopolitan.

According to the latest OECD Regional Well-Being Report, Canberra is the best place to live in the world*. Residents are among the healthiest, wealthiest and most highly educated people in Australia. They live longer, report lower levels of stress, but still manage to earn significantly more than those in other Australian cities.

Canberra’s ethnic diversity is reflected in its dining, music and theatre. It is a young and lively city that has an exciting nightlife and plenty of interesting cafés, bars and clubs. Locals call Canberra ‘the 20 minute city’ because nothing is very far away.

It’s a friendly, safe place with a growing population of 400,000 but with all the amenities of a much larger city. It is home to excellent entertainment and sporting venues, fresh food markets, wineries and some of the country’s most important cultural institutions, including the National Museum, the National Gallery of Australia and the Australian War Memorial.

The countryside surrounding Canberra features impressive mountains and rugged bushland, which is ideal for outdoor activities such as bushwalking, horse riding, hot-air ballooning and camping. Sailing and canoeing are popular on Lake Burley Griffin, while the ski fields of the Kosciuszko National Park and the beaches of the beautiful South Coast are just a few hours away.

What’s more, Sydney, with its iconic Bridge, Opera House and harbour, is three hours away by bus or car and only 45 minutes by air.

8 COURSE GUIDE 2017

When you ask most people, they say that their university years were the best years of their life. And here at the University of Canberra, we think that’s exactly the way it should be.

Set in a native haven of clean air, tall trees and huge expanses of lawn, you’ll enjoy the company of Australian wildlife including parrots, cockatoos and even resident kangaroos. Despite its peaceful setting, the campus is an exciting and inspiring place to be.

While study will always remain your priority, there are plenty of opportunities to socialise with your fellow students. There are concerts including our famous music festival Groovin’ the Moo, market days, dinners and different sorts of theatre from all over the world. There are also a number of clubs and societies you’re welcome to join. These range from social to cultural and are a great way to meet others who share your interests.

If you like to keep fit there’s a sports and fitness centre that includes a gymnasium as well as squash, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, plus ovals for all football codes. Our interest in sport doesn’t stop there either. As well as enjoying a close relationship with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), we’re education partners with the Brumbies rugby team, the University of Canberra Capitals basketball team and the Canberra United women’s soccer team. When it comes time to unwind and relax with friends, you won’t have to travel far at all. There are bars, coffee shops and restaurants, all right here on campus. When you study at the University of Canberra you’ll find campus life exciting, entertaining and full of fun.

10 COURSE GUIDE 2017

You’ve no doubt heard that Australians love their sport, which is 100% true. That’s why there are stadiums in Australia that hold 100,000 spectators. Of course, it’s the quality of Australian sports people that draws such huge crowds, and it’s this quality that we celebrate and encourage.

We love our sport at the University of Canberra, too, so we’re delighted that our education partner, the Brumbies rugby team, has moved its operations on campus to become part of our Sporting Commons.

As well as training facilities and administration offices for the Brumbies, the Sporting Commons has a state-of-the-art gymnasium for use by everyone in the University community and state of the art research facilities.

The University has an impressive record in research and teaching when it comes to sport and the Sporting Commons is helping to further enhance that reputation. We also have an impressive record when it comes to our own athletes. In 2012, University of Canberra athletes won 14 medals at the London Paralympics and Olympic Games.

The University is also continuing to grow our sporting partners to provide opportunities for students to complete work integrated learning alongside some of the best athletes in the world. Some of our partnerships include the University

of Canberra Capitals basketball team and the Canberra United women's soccer team.

The University also works closely with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in a partnership that helps individuals achieve both their academic and sporting goals. Athletes at the AIS are faced with the challenge of balancing education, career and personal life with a demanding sporting schedule. To help, we provide a range of support services including course advice, planning guidance and the opportunity to tailor study loads to fit in with sporting commitments.

You’ll enjoy a great sporting culture at the University of Canberra and plenty of great sporting events, too. That’s because as a student, you get discounted tickets.

The courses are designed for groups of professionals such as managers, teachers, nurses, lawyers and diplomats as well as college and university students who want to experience Australian culture and study English at the same time.

Master of Business Administration, 1998

“STUDYING AT UC WAS THE MOST CHERISHED EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFETIME”Since graduating from UC's Business Administration program in 1998, Dr Rahul Mirchandani has been making waves in business communities around the world. Rahul is the Executive Director of Aries Agro Limited, an international agricultural inputs company that manufactures specialty nutrients for plants and animals. Even though he runs an international business, teaches and volunteers, Rahul knows how to stay grounded and is a dedicated family man. Rahul credits the experience and education he gained in UC's Business Administration program with giving him the ability to drive his company's marketing, sales, public relations, finance, and corporate strategy efforts.

While you might imagine Rahul sitting behind a computer most days, he is actually a hands-on businessman who enjoys traveling to remote rural areas of India, meeting distributors, and farmers. Rahul says, "Meeting with them helps us understand their habits, which enables us to design products that are relevant to them." Outside of Aries Agro, Rahul ensures he spends quality time with his family. "Home is my sanctuary. I rarely, if ever, work from home. When I'm home, it's strictly family time," Rahul says.

Rahul has paved the way for youth entrepreneurship and agribusiness, earning dozens of leadership positions and awards over the years. Product innovation and leadership

in the Indian agribusiness sector, led Rahul's company to be one of eight selected to meet with US President Barack Obama to discuss Indian agricultural innovation, and he also held an audience with Queen Elizabeth II during Commonwealth Day, 2013 to report on the success of the Commonwealth-Asia Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs which he founded in 2011.

Rahul remembers his days spent on UC's campus fondly. "Studying at UC was undoubtedly the most cherished experience of my lifetime. The University provides a menu of amazing options for a student to choose from".

Page 56: COURSE GUIDE - University of Canberra...The University of Canberra is a young, up-and-coming university located in Australia’s national capital. We enjoy a rich and diverse campus

By 2030, the University of Canberra will be a leading example of how a modern world-class university transformed its physical surroundings to create an integrated learning community. The campus will be transformed into a series of precincts, renowned for facilitating national and international partnerships and transformational research and learning.

Plans for development of the campus include new health and innovation precincts, a cutting-edge residential development, UC Public Hospital, aged-care facilities, sports facilities, new childcare facilities and a Great Hall.

HEALTH PRECINCT

The Health Precinct is the University of Canberra’s platform for expanding and transforming Health research, education and service delivery. Our vision is to achieve better health and wellbeing for our local and global communities.

The Health Precinct will give students access to more clinical placements, greater opportunities for learning through shared research, and paid employment with health providers. Students will learn in work environments and health care settings alongside health practitioners and researchers in all aspects of allied health care - from physiotherapy and nursing to exercise physiology, psychology and dietetics.

INNOVATION PARK

The Innovation Park will increase the number of national and international bodies to pursue research partnerships directly from our UC campus. It will comprise of up to eight separate, integrated developments, each master planned to focus on commercialising the research conducted both at UC and other Australian research organisations. Innovation Park will be developed in partnership with a biotechnology company which will develop and commercialise specific biopharmaceutical research.

CAMPUS COMMUNITY

The final step in our vision is to develop innovative housing and lifestyle options to truly make the university part of the community. A campus community of over 3000 residences will offer the choice for students, staff and members of the public to live in housing typologies co-designed by leading architects, and staff and students of the University.

The aim is to integrate new and innovative residential design and density and form the basis of research projects in the development of new housing strategies, to lead the way nationally. These will further provide opportunities for our built environment students to gain internships and work experience in concept design, feasibility as well as assisting the actual development of the project.

The campus community will include retail options, primary and secondary schooling. It will create a sustainable commercial model for retailers and service providers and enhance the natural environment and landscape by investing in and ensuring sustainable practices and development are at the forefront of the development whilst including and integrated strategy for parking, traffic circulation, and recreational space on campus.

GET REAL WORK EXPERIENCE WHILE YOU STUDY

Work-integrated learning (WIL) is learning first-hand through real work or work-like experiences. WIL is a key element to enhancing employability in the workplace and is integral to many of our courses. This reinforces our commitment to preparing professional and highly employable graduates with the right mix of skills and knowledge.

These experiences come in many different forms and all help separate our graduates from others locally and internationally. Being in the capital city of Australia means we have access to all the big global corporations, not for profits and non-government enterprises, all providing you, our students, with different experiences and opportunities to excel.

The different ways to get this experience include:

• Internships• Industry, research and community projects• Clinical placements• Professional mentoring and• Simulations.

The focus to this real life preparation of our students is one of the key advantages our graduates have over others when entering the workforce.

Find out the type of opportunities that exist here:
