WITH A 19+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOAN
To find out more please contact the financial support team at Kirklees College: email [email protected] or call (freephone) 0800 804 6134.
One question tends to loom over learners before they make a decision to re-enter education and typically it’s whether they can afford to do a course, due to other financial commitments. With a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan you can now take the immediate financial burden away.
We encourage learners to invest in themselves and an education will help your value appreciate, where as with most other purchasing decisions, the opposite is true.
If you see a course with this icon - it means it’s qualifies for the Advanced Learner Loan.
Loan eligibility doesn’t depend on your income and there are no credit checks.
However, whether you qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan or not will depend on your:• Course• Age• Nationality or residency status
You pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn more than £21,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below £21,000 a year.
Your annual repayment amount will be nine per cent of any income you earn over £21,000.
DISCLAIMER: Please note courses are subject to change. Details correct at time of print. See website for up to date course info. The college reserves the right to make changes at any time.

LD STUDIED: NVQ COOKERY LEVELS 1 AND 2 Neville had worked in sales for 20 years but opened his own business after completing cookery qualifications at Kirklees College. The dad-of-3 is now realising his dreams through running Café Novo in Dewsbury town centre.
Neville said: “I enjoyed cooking for friends and family and always had the dream of opening my own restaurant.
I did the course at Kirklees College because I wanted to increase my cookery skills but also know all about the background things – food standards, kitchen regulations and hospitality, all the extra things you need to run your own business.
It covered everything. The teaching staff at college, particularly Mike and Cynthia, were amazing. I am really grateful for all the help they have given me!”

STUDIED: LEVEL 5 DTTLS TEACHING QUALIFICATION After achieving his Level 5 qualification with Kirklees College, Mark started his own company Jigby Training Solutions - developing and delivering courses within the health and social care sector supporting staff working with people with challenging behaviour, first aid courses and bespoke courses.
“I really enjoyed the course, it was great learning about other people’s experiences as there as a broad range of teaching roles among the students on it.
“I’m earning more now I have the qualification and it has given me extra skills that I think put me ahead of other training providers in terms of the experience I can offer.”

Maria was unemployed when she decided to do the course. The Diploma is based around work experience and Maria was delighted to get a placement at the Society for the Blind of Dewsbury, Batley and District. She obviously fitted in really well as she was offered a job straight after she finished her course – and has already earned a promotion to Support Leader.
Maria said: “I found the course to be great. I really enjoyed meeting people, getting out and mixing and learning new things because I’d been suffering a little with anxiety and it helped me out of it.
I would recommend the course – it definitely opens doors. To anyone in the same situation that I was, I would say go to college and don’t be afraid of going for your goals! I’m so glad that I did!

“I thought it would be good to have first aid knowledge being around dogs so much, as you never know when it might be needed. I also have a cat and dog of my own. I really enjoyed the course. It was very well structured and the tutor made the day interactive and enjoyable, with
her vast knowledge and stories of animal rescues. I thought it was well-paced and there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
The teaching room was large and bright and the environment relaxed and friendly. All in all, it’s one of the best one day courses I have attended in years!”

LAND YOUR DREAM JOB THROUGH RE-TRAINING
STUDIED: BEAUTY THERAPY LEVEL 2 NVQ (PART-TIME) Lucy was working in HR but decided to start her own business LP Beauty in 2016 after doing the college course part-time. Since qualifying at college, she has done further industry training to enhance her skills and offer more treatments to her clients. Initially she was running the business alongside her other role but decided to follow her dream career full-time.
Lucy said: “I started my business in July 2016 and it has continued to grow from then, mainly through word of mouth/client recommendations. It got to the point where I was busy enough to take the step to focus on my business full-time.
“My previous job role helped me to develop good customer service skills, deal well with working under pressure and organise my time and myself well – these different skills have helped me and will continue to help me with the running of my business.
“I love my job and working for myself. I’m so glad I decided to follow my dream and that the course at Kirklees College enabled me to do this!”

DEWSBURY LEARNING QUARTER (DLQ)COMING 2018/19
New Kirklees College centres in the heart of Dewsbury are set to transform learning and lives in your community.
The project has received funding from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Kirklees Council, and as part of the wider North Kirklees Growth Zone (NKGZ) regeneration programme.
The college will open the Dewsbury Learning Quarter (DLQ) in 2018/19 with two new centres – Springfield Sixth Form Centre and Pioneer Centre, that will provide exciting courses to help you achieve your ambitions and kick-start your journey to a successful career.
Springfield Sixth Form Centre is a purpose-built state-of-the-art centre on Bradford Road (next to Lidl Supermarket) which will focus on courses for 16-18 year olds.Higher Education courses will be taught in our new Pioneer Centre - the refurbished iconic Pioneer House building, which dates back to 1880.
The listed landmark building is being carefully restored and brought firmly into the 21st century to create a uniquely contemporary centre for Creative and Digital Industries, higher level qualifications, Apprenticeships and adult courses. See more on pages 56-57.
The centres will replace the current Dewsbury Centre and Batley School of Art.
