A BRIDGE TO YOUR FUTURE

Much has been written and even more vocal time and energy expended of late, regarding Higher Education. Much of this has centred on funding cutbacks, the impact of lower resourcing on teaching and learning and, of course, the potential impacts of higher fees on students. Certainly these are challenging times.

At Loughborough College, we stand by the view that successful completion of a Degree or Higher Diploma will continue to bring lasting and lifetime benefits. We also know that, despite the difficulties, we have approaches that will ensure quality teaching and learning. We do recognise the problematic situation. We have responded by adapting our approaches and looking carefully at the support we can give to those who aspire to a Higher Education qualification. In the midst of these difficult times, we feel we can provide cost effective but high quality programmes in a range of important vocational areas.

My confidence in the statements above is a product of looking back on past cohorts of Loughborough College graduates and diplomats. It also reflects the work that tutors have put in over recent months as well as years. I continue to be inspired by the stories of young people and the not-quite-so-young who have both surprised and delighted themselves with their self-development as they pursued programmes with us. It’s great that some of those students, past and present, have kindly given us the benefit of their experience in the case studies in this prospectus. They speak enthusiastically about the quality of our teaching and our facilities here at Loughborough College – plus the great social time that many have found.

We share a campus with Loughborough University and both institutions are the outcome of the famous Loughborough institution of the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. Although we went our separate ways in 1952, we remain close and indeed many of our programmes are validated by Loughborough University. We also jointly share a students’ union (LSU). In my view this is the best union in the UK. We also have significant collaborative arrangements with other top class Universities, who value our contribution and regularly positively remark on the quality of our endeavours.

Once you join us, you will brush shoulders with so many interesting people. Our sports programmes attract all manner of sports people - including the very best elite athletes. For those of us not in that category, there is still the opportunity to hear first hand and to feel the growing impact of being involved in the London 2012 Olympic Games. You’ll also get the opportunity to share your time as a Loughborough College student, with people from all over the globe. In a world that has shrinking boundaries, such contact is of major significance. It doesn’t matter, whether you want to live on the campus or commute from home to further your higher education, these opportunities will apply.

I do hope that you will carefully look through this prospectus, recognise the vocational higher education opportunities that can make your future bright; even in these challenging times. Partner us in your personal bridge to the future.

STUDENT LIFE

Students’ UnionCollege students are automatically members of Loughborough Students’ Union. One of the very best in the country, The Union offers an unrivalled array of facilities and services. Not only is it one of the best evening venues of its kind, but it offers a vast amount of volunteering and once in a lifetime opportunities for every student.

One of the most active in the country, the Students’ Union is owned, controlled and run by its members. Its key role is to support and represent its members as well as providing them with the facilities they need to fully enjoy their time in education. It plays a huge part in enhancing the ‘Loughborough Experience’ for all students, through participation in the many clubs and societies, voluntary projects, charity fundraising or taking a role as a representative. All of these help students to develop leadership, organisational and communication skills.

The Union building also comprises a fully professional advice centre and its own employment exchange as well as providing catering outlets, a shop, banks, a hairdresser, an opticians and a dentist. The venue itself is open for event nights every night of the week, with the main room hosting big name acts, and 9 other bars to enjoy.

The Union also boasts five of the most successful sections in the country:

Athletic Union Whatever your level and commitment in sport, the Athletic Union is for you. Each of our 55 clubs is student run and boasts a membership total in excess of 4000. If you’re interested in joining any student club at Loughborough, visit our website or come down to the Fresher’s bazaar in the first week of term. The AU is not merely concerned with winning trophies; a large amount of its time is dedicated to personal and club development. Becoming involved in club life is a great way to meet new people, and develop both on and off the field, learning some major leadership and administrative skills that you can take with you into later life.

Rag Loughborough Students’ Rag is the largest student fundraising organisation in the country, last year breaking its own previous record and raising £1,042,125.53! Students have lots of opportunities to contribute to the great work that Rag does by taking part in a huge range of different and exciting events over the year; from jumping out of an aeroplane to climbing Kilimanjaro, conquering the Tough Guy assault course or travelling the country with a collection bucket! The money raised benefits many charities; from local projects in Charnwood and causes close to students’ hearts to major national and international charities.

Action Action provides a huge range of opportunities in the local community for student and staff volunteers. It runs over 25 projects which are student led and many in conjunction with external organisations. The range is vast, from teaching local children to enjoying the annual Tea Dance with the more elderly members of the local community! If there is something you want to do that they currently don’t offer they will do everything they can to set it up for you, the choice as well as the fun is endless! Volunteer with Action, maximize your Loughborough experience and strengthen your CV!

Media Our multi-million pound Media Centre at LSU offers all students an unrivalled opportunity to get involved in student media and journalism. It’s a spectacular opportunity to try something completely new, and can give you a great stepping stone into a career in the media, help build a portfolio, stick something worthwhile on the CV or just meet some great friends. It’s incredibly easy to get involved in any of the three sections. From our award-winning TV station, LSUTV, to your soundtrack to Loughborough, LCR, who broadcast some fantastic radio shows 24/7; and not forgetting Label, our fortnightly student magazine, offering opportunities in writing, photography, design and editing. Whether you’re a budding presenter, cameraman or journalist, the opportunities at LSMedia are endless.

SocietiesThe Union building is an exciting complex led and run by its students. It provides a base for over 60 societies and associations. Amongst the more traditional of these associations such as the International Students’ Association and the LGBTA Association. As far as societies are concerned students can join up to the likes of anything from the Hot Air Balloon society, the DJ Society, Breakdancing society and even the Union’s own circus society ‘Fever’. There is lots of space and meeting rooms available in the Union for free for societies and students to use.

At the hub of the East MidlandsRemember too, that there’s a great time awaiting you outside the campus. The town is jam packed with lively pubs, bars and student-friendly clubs. Nottingham and Leicester are half an hour away with excellent shopping and nightlife. The new redeveloped Highcross centre situated in the centre of Leicester and Fosse Park located on the outskirts of the city are sure to cater for all your retail therapy needs.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

I’m much more confident now about applying for jobs that I thought were out of my league before. I know I can work at a higher management level – and, for that, I owe a great debt of gratitude to Loughborough College.

”After 27 years Sheila Grou took her first steps back into a classroom when she enrolled at Loughborough College.

The Evington Leisure Centre duty officer knows she has grown in confidence during her three years, studying towards a Higher Professional Diploma in Leisure Management and then a top-up degree.

Her message to workers worried about uncertain times ahead is a positive one, saying: “The financial situation in the world is a worry for many people who need to ensure they stay in employment. It is so easy to get into a rut and fall behind, particularly academically.

“I must admit when going to College was first suggested to me I was terrified – I hadn’t been involved in any continuous education since 1980. All I’d done was a stream of short training courses you tend to get sent on when you’re in a job.

“At first I found the way education has changed to be a real challenge. When I was at school it was all direct questions and answers, but at College there was less formality and it’s more about your own personal vision and backing up your answers.”

CHILDCARE

The key is you get out of courses what you put into them and I would certainly recommend Loughborough College to others

”Flexibility has been the key to success for Andrea Mardel-Ferreira almost from the day she first walked into Loughborough College.

Now studying for her BA Honours Degree in Education Studies, the 34-year-old has found life anything but straightforward and uneventful as she has pursued her goals.

For she had two pregnancies whilst studying for her Foundation Degree in Children and Young People’s Services. Throw in a couple of career changes and you can appreciate just how grateful she has been for the excellent support she has received at College.

“You can say for sure that it hasn’t been easy, but it has been a great experience for me,” she said. “I handed one project in when my new baby was just a week old and I’ve got to thank the tutors for being so flexible with me.”

Andrea began her initial course as manager of a 70-place day nursery but subsequently became an assessor of NVQ childcare courses at the College. After that, she has opened up her own nursery – Lime Tree Day Nursery in Barrow-on-Soar in September 2010, employing two other students who had completed their Foundation Degrees at Loughborough.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

I chose the College because of its locality and the course. Loughborough is on my doorstep and suited my requirements. I also preferred to come into a classroom with other people than learn at home which was another option open to me.

”Contracts manager Martin Hargreaves has positive feelings about his second experience of studying at Loughborough College.

Now 43, Martin completed his two-year day release HNC in Contract Management course in 2010 after previously gaining a qualification in electrical installation here.

Combining the classroom with his job at Ratcliffe Power Station wasn’t a problem.

“The content was very good, with the management side being what I was particularly interested in. It was also good also to meet other people from different parts of the country on the course. I never felt that my age was an issue as we all fitted into the course together.”

Martin remarked on how the College had modernised since studying here in 2003. Now back in his work role full time, he adds: “My studies were relevant to my supervisory role, so I am benefitting now from going back to College.”

ENGINEERING

College is a much more personal experience than university and I think that’s a lot better. The teaching is more direct.

The course here has been good and I have enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend it to someone else.

Studying at Loughborough College has set Lee Chambers’ academic career back on track after being made redundant by British Airways two years ago.

The 21-year-old HND Engineering student was eight months into completing a degree in Engineering as part of his employment with the airline when he was told he was no longer required.

Not to be put off, he turned to his former College where he undertook a diploma to study towards a further qualification to ensure his career prospects were not damaged.

He said: “I decided to study an HND because it was better value than doing a degree for me.

“I think the College approach to learning is better than university too. Rather than sitting in a massive lecture theatre listening to someone talk you can ask questions and feel more involved”

Another result of the course was that it helped to extend my knowledge in management subjects such as strategic management and marketing.

”Tourism management student Kinga Strupczewska says that meeting great people, including lecturers and fellow students, was the biggest highlight of her top up degree at Loughborough College.

Kinga chose the College because we were able to offer the very course she was looking for to broaden her tourism horizons. The top-up course in Travel and Tourism Management also enabled her to gain a full BA (Hons) in Tourism Management.

When asked what the most enjoyable part of the course was, she added: “I think the aspect I enjoyed the most was writing my dissertation, even though it was really difficult. But, with all the support from you at Loughborough, I have learned not only about Performance Management - my dissertation subject - but also gained the academic skills to write such a piece of work. I am planning to undertake a Masters degree in either HR Management or Business Management.”

Kinga has now moved to London and she is working at LeasePlan Ltd, part of the largest vehicle management group in the world, as a customer service executive. She feels that she is making a significant contribution to LeasePlan UK through supporting market leading, innovative, yet practical approaches in market leading customer service.

The Loughborough course was much closer to my needs and staff proved very helpful on a course which as it was of university-standard included plenty of hard work and deadlines.

”Gaining his top up degree was just one of the benefits 24-year-old Shoyab Sheikh has taken from studying at Loughborough College.

Now taking his first full-time steps in the airline industry, the Nuneaton man explains: “The organisational, management and time planning skills I have learnt from coming to College will help me and it has also boosted my confidence.

“Many don’t realise just how much education can increase self-belief. The information and training has given me a good basis upon which to build my career.”

Shoyab says his decision to go further afield for his top up degree in travel and tourism management with airlines after doing his higher national diploma locally proved fully justified.

Since his course ended in June 2010, Shoyab has worked part-time with ground handling agents Swiss Port at Birmingham Airport and started a full time customer services post with Coventry-based TUI Travel in February 2011.

“It’s a varied job and an exciting start to my career in the travel industry,” he said. “I am confident that I can go on and achieve my ambitions – and College has played a part in that.”

I saw the facilities and instantly wanted to be here. What’s impressed me most has been the quality of teaching. Our class of ten felt like a family as we socialised together and helped each other with the academic side of the course.

”A quick look around the music and performing arts department was all it took for Kieran Fowkes to commit his ambitious future into College hands.

Now he is convinced his two years spent on a Foundation Degree in Music Performance and Production will play a big part in those plans.

The budding songwriter, singer, guitarist and drummer says: “Tutors were always there for us on a one-to-one basis, giving us feedback so we always knew what we were doing.”

Alongside coming to grips with the theory side and improving his skills and confidence in the studio, Kieran became part of a College band called The Naked Lunch.

“We played gigs in Nottingham, Leicester and more locally and it was great fun and experience,” he said.

Kieran added his plans included a top up degree at university and, hopefully, going on a song writing course in Hollywood.

“My education will stand me in good stead for the future. I want to work in the industry and also am interested in teaching music,” he said.

I also work at Ratcliffe College where I have been involved in careers evenings and students have asked me about higher education and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I always mention Loughborough College.

Former professional footballer Phil Gilchrist came to Loughborough College after announcing his retirement from the game.

The 38-year old made 39 appearances for Leicester City during his career that included spells at Hartlepool and Oxford.

He is now studying towards a Foundation Degree in Sports Science and has enjoyed his time at the College so far.

He said: “I have found it really good here. My past career was playing football so coming back into full time education was quite daunting.

“But everyone at the College has made the transition so easy for me and I am really enjoying the course – it’s been great.

“Once I have finished this course I am hoping to study a top up BSc in sports science before making a move into teaching.”

TEACHER TRAINING

I really liked the course, it was a chance to study other teachers in action and learn from them. When you are teaching you have your own ideas, but studying with others enables you to pool ideas and resources. It really is very useful and I’ve already been able to put into practice a lot that I learnt on the course.

Loughborough College tutor Clare Singleton, achieved a promotion to course leader shortly after completing her Graduate Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector and feels the course was definitely an influence in her career progression.

“I made lots of friends both from within the College and beyond and I would certainly recommend the course to others”
