    Outline o the ourseThis course is designed to use , and to extend the experience that course mem-

    b e r ~.have. gai ned in .institutional work with children and young peop le. Oppor-tumhes will be provided for course members to discuss their work to increasetheir understanding of human behaviour , to practi se new skills and to observenew ways of working with people in institutions.

    Th e course will include lectures, group discussions, films and case discussions.Th ere will also be visits to social and educational agencies and inst itution s toobserve or to participate in the activities. Group and individual tutorials willbe held to beJp course members gain as much as possible from th eir visits andto assist them io their individua l studies.

    . Throughout the course there will be opportunities for reviewing and apprais-ing the course itself. Some reserved periods in the latter part of the course havebeen set aside to a llow the inclusion of material of particular int eres t to coursemembers.

    Special attention will be paid to individual and ITToup behaviour. Memberswill be encouraged to conside r ways in wh ich insights and skiJJs gained fromthe course may be used in promot ing g ood human relations in in st itutions.

    Set out below is a synopsi s of the subjects . Jn some instanc es lect urers wi llbe spending time at the course before and after their sessions; thi s will enablecourse member s to discuss matters of personal interest with them.

    Hum an B ehaviour:n thi s su bject th ere will be 11 sessions dealing with ph ysica l, men ta l and

    social dev elopm ent of children and young people. D r Jean Seabrook, an experi-enced play therapist, and now lecturer in charge of speech therapy training atChristchurch Teachers' College. will cover th e period from b irth to 12 years of

    later life wi ll be dealt with. Th ere will be discussion of suc h topics as a child'sea r ly relationship with adults and other childr en , the dev elopm ent o f conscienceand moral s changes in the roles of men and women in the hom e and communityand their s ignific ance for children.

    Mr .sH. Cohen. formerly a probation officer and psychologist in the Depa rt-ment of Ju st ice and later on the staff of the Psychological Servic e, wi ll lecture onadolescents-their physical l rowth. their relationships with adults and with th eirpeers , their attitude towards the community and community attitudes towardsthem.

    In th eir sess ions , both lecturers intend to cover topics sugges ted by coursememb ers relevant to their particular institutional setting, and also matters arisingout of observational vi sits and participation placements.
