Professors Jean-Marc Abcarius & Christopher Burns _ Course Fiile Fall 2010 _ ARCH IIII _ Lebanese-American University Beirut
1. Course Description
This studio further elaborates the process of theoretical investigation of space, with the emphasis on the communication of ideas through different representational models and tools. Students at this stage will continue the study of small to medium scale projects with emphasis on basic principles of spatial design. References and case studies of canonical works in modern design may serve as theoretical background in the continuing development of a theoretical foundation. The elaboration of a complete set of architectural drawings for the final design (plans/sections/elevations) in addition to models will be expected at this stage.
2. Course Objectives
1. To develop the students’ ability to translate ideas into forms by working on projects of small to medium scale that develop their perceptual and theoretical approach to form making2. To develop the students analytical and synthetic skills through drawing and model-making as means of visualization, experimentation and formalization3. To develop the students’ understanding of scale, proportion, rhythm and their application in the development of spatial forms4. To develop the students’ understanding of spatial relations, specifically the relationship between exterior form and interior space as a basis for the development of a coherent project

3. Studio Project[s] Outline
Bains de BeyrouthThe Corniche is one of the most important landmarks in Beirut. It not only represents one of the few truly public spaces of the city – a place that is shared by all Beiruti’s, - but it offers the most prominent open views onto the Mediterranean. This highly symbolic place is, however, going through a radical transformation. Privatization by hotel and project developments is transforming the very meaning of the Corniche, usually defined as the most remote geographical border of a mainland by a water line, with a natural edge or cliff. Recent refurbishments of the railing, lighting and benches, using a mixed bag of nostalgic elements has added to the disconcerting sense of transformation. This studio attempts to reconsider critically the changes along the Avenue de Paris by giving part of the Corniche back to its citizens. We propose a series of public bathing and recreational areas along the rocky shores between the Riviera Hotel and AUB- Beach. The studio will address the boundaries between land and sea, city and landscape, exposure and shelter, private and public, light and shadow, movement and immobility, temporality and permanence. Issues such as the connection from the street to the sea, in relation with the different programmatic elements will be translated through architectural form. Project 01We begin with the study of the building typology of public recreational buildings on or in the water, working together in small groups. Analyze in drawings and models a selected project. Architectural aspects to consider include: the context and the site; public and service spaces; interior and exterior boundaries; structure and material; form and volume; mass and void; circulation and entry sequence; daylight and building technologies. A two-week project, with group presentation, comparison and discussion.Project 02For the second project, the work will again be in small groups. Examine, observe and analyze creatively the existing urban site and natural context. A two-week project, with group presentation and discussion.Project 03Reinterpreting the palette of design strategies discovered and using the information gathered from our site analysis, begin your individual semester project for the design of public bathing and recreational facilities. The site specifics and functional program will be announced. Our intention is to examine comprehensively in one or several small structures, the architectural and landscape qualities of concept, urban context, massing, functional program, circulation, interior space, exterior articulation, structure, material, and building technology. Attendance at the group presentations and discussions is mandatory. In private practice, as well as in the broader field of architecture, collaboration becomes increasingly important as specialization increases. For us, collaboration is an important source of inspiration – our differences of opinion sharpen and refine the design process. We will promote exchange and collaboration between students while at LAU.

3. Behaviour (how do people use the space thrughout 24hours, weekdays and weekends)
4. Urban furniture (mobile merchants, benches, street lamps, railing pavement)
5. Circulation ( study of all access and exit points to and from the corniche, to and from the sea shore)
6. Geography 01 (mapping of the shore with all the different waterpools and rocks)
7. Geography 02 (mapping the different zones/segments of the corniche)
8. Motivation and Mood ( define different stake holders and interview them)
9. Photodocumentation (the two edges of the corniche)
10. Model (build 1:100 scale cardboard model of given segment of the corniche)

The mid term jury / presentation will take place at Sheik Zayed Hall, beginning at 12.00 PM on Wednesday, the 1st of December 2010. Please start pinning up your drawings at 11.30 AM latest.
This presentation serves to clarify your idea and define your concept. Your concept should not only reveal your very personal attitude towards the context (the site, Rouché) but also show the disposition of the program elements within your project. Please present the following documents and models for the mid- term presentation:
1) Concept model at scale 1:1000 to be placed in site model2) Model at scale 1:2003) All relevant plan levels at scale 1:200 4) All relevant sections at scale 1:2005) Optional: Relevant elevations at scale 1:200 (only if needed to explain the project) 6) Analytical diagram showing the functions (adult swimming, children swimming, changing rooms, toilets and showers, snack bar and one additional function) at scale 1:10007) Collages to convey the atmosphere and idea of the project8) A selection of sketches and other material showing the evolution of your work
Check list for your work:
- dotted lines only for objects and building parts that are above the plan- thin continuous lines for projected objects , thick lines for cut building parts- consider line-weights in plans and sections- carefully consider the visual balance of your drawings. Keep them light and don’t fill them with unnecessary furniture, plants, and other CAD- library elements. - don’t forget section keys - all plans should be directed in the same direction- sections and elevations need to sit on the ground (a line for the ground, side walk, street , neighboring building, etc- don’t forget to add the sidewalk of Rouché in your 1:200 model- it’s always good to add a person in your drawings for scale information- please double check that your prints are OK and that none of your drawings are upside-down or mirrored, etc…- label your plans in small font sizes in order not to “kill” your drawings- carefully consider your layout, avoid fancy shapes, fonts and colors. The layout should enhance your concept and not complement it (less is more…)
We wish you good luck and a successful presentation.
