CONTINUE BUILDING>> NORMAL SPECIAL They begin with a detailed analysis of the city of Bremen as a plan and living space. From a very large to a smaller scale, you approach the whole city, then a quadrant, analytically and conceptually from various aspects, and finally design a building that complements the urban fabric and continues the structure of the city at this location. The specific characteristics of a standard place are taken up, a small house is created, which fits ideally to the place and at the same time offers the function it contains a suitable space and an appropriate, specific appearance in the street. The aim is to track down and analyse urban planning and functional structures and, building on this, to develop a first complete draft from the specification of the task to the conceptual idea right down to the last detail. You will learn about the manifold conditions and dependencies in architectural design and learn how to deal with them in a target-oriented way. The project is processed integrated in the modules BA 1.2, 4.3, BA 5.2.

Climate compatible building: Refuge / Accommodation / Hostel For a self-chosen place in the nature, you design an accommodation for 18 to 20 hikers, mountaineers or cyclists. The concept of the building is based on a respectful treatment of the chosen location. Design, material and energy concepts reflect this approach. The ecological footprint of the planned building is - demonstrably - as low as possible.

Urban/building typologies - Supermarket/Bremen

A supermarket is a trading and transhipment centre for a large number of goods and a large number of customers. Supermarkets are highly organized places where public presentation and private needs meet directly. This semester, they are designing a supermarket with 800 to 1,500 square metres of retail space in Bremen and are investigating the extent to which site-specific architecture on the one hand and recognizability and corporate identity on the other can be combined. They should question the functional diagrams proposed by market researchers and marketing experts, if necessary invent new forms and/or radicalise the familiar and supposedly well-functioning ones. At the same time, you should investigate how a further empty space can be architecturally determined: through the functional concept, the supporting structure, the shell, the light and/or the material.

As an introduction to the topic we read the novel Four Apples by David Wagner (Rowohlt, Reinbek 2009, 160 pages).

Living together / Working together

The old Neustadt in Bremen has great development potential due to its very central location within the historic city centre. This is far from being exhausted, even though new housing projects are currently being planned and a model bicycle quarter is being built. In addition, further concepts are needed that can also provide impetus for the development of the city as a place to live. For a gap in the Alte Neustadt, we want to look for conceptual approaches for new forms of living together and working together.

LIVING 4.0 Sharing concepts for housing and neighbourhood in the Neue Vahr Nord

What should a building and its surroundings look like, in which people can live well, who live according to the principle of "sharing instead of owning" and which accompanying infrastructure do people and households need in the context of new forms of mobility and in the age of digitalisation of tomorrow? Within the framework of the Alvar Aalto Prize In 2019 these questions are to be answered programmatically and structurally on the basis of a draft on a plot of land in the Neue Vahr Nord. Neue Vahr was completed in 1961 as the largest construction project in Europe with 9,200 rental apartments and almost 800 owner-occupied homes. Designed as a "city of the future" according to the urban planning principles of the "Charter of Athens" and the ideas of the garden city, the Neue Vahr was considered a nationwide model project for modern large-scale housing construction at the time of its creation. The plot for which the ideas are to be developed is a corner plot, whose direct surroundings from terraced houses to skyscrapers contain all the building typologies that characterise Vahr. A new urban building block is to redefine the corner that was previously built with a single-storey row of shops, both in terms of urban development and content. It will also be a matter of examining how a building can fit into the special, historically significant structure and shape of Vahr and how it can be updated in a contemporary way.

LIVING 4.0 Sharing concepts for housing and neighbourhood in the Neue Vahr Nord

The urban planning concept developed within the framework of module BA 1.6. is worked through and deepened within module BA 1.7. In close proximity to the neighbourhood education centre, with shops and a church, concrete ideas are now to be developed as to what an ideal house could look like for people who would like to counter the steadily growing consumption of living space with a different lifestyle and residential model using the "Sharing Economy". Concepts are being sought for a hybrid building in which a mobility station and supplementary services that also make sense for the neighbourhood are located. The aim is the principle of sharing can be read at all levels: from the structure of the individual dwelling to the communally used areas in the interior and exterior to the urban planning and content networking with the neighbourhood. The house / ensemble can be regarded as the first exemplary nucleus of such a movement in Vahr and Bremen.

The specific task is determined with the application for the thesis. Irrespective of the individual specifications, the services must be provided in accordance with Module BA 4.8.

Didactics + Architecture/ Finishing and Furniture

This elective module is offered in cooperation with lecturers and students of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences at the TH Köln (study courses Pedagogy of Childhood and Family Education/Social Work). The module is organized in three planning workshop blocks, which take place at the HS Bremen and the TH Cologne.

The interdisciplinary teaching research project is based on a workshop that was started in the academic year 2017/18 and continued in 2018/19. In a participatory process, the appropriation of space and the wishes and ideas of children, parents and specialists for the rooms of a day care centre were dealt with. The current workshop examines an already existing kindergarten in the stock, which with its typical problems is exemplary for the different interests of investors and users. We want to create an inspiring learning environment by thinking architecture and didactics together - with selective interventions and the development of ambiguous educational furniture. The results of the planning workshops will be summarised in a final publication.

Yovokopé - a children's village in Togo gets a new school building The association Lebenschance e.V., founded in Bremen, supports aid projects in the Republic of Togo together with the private Brinkhege Foundation. Around 500 orphans have found a safe home in the village of Yovokopé. Now a new school building is to be added to the existing classrooms in the village.

In the seminar we want to develop a future vision for the village and then deal with individual building blocks, especially the planned school. The aim is to deal with the hot and humid climate on site as well as the limited availability of materials and to develop a constructive concept (M1:50 up to M 1:1) for the building on this basis. In the foreground is experimental work with the available materials. The aim of the seminar is to constructively penetrate the building to such an extent that, with the support of volunteers, it can be erected in the shortest possible time in late summer.

Felix Brinkhege, a member of the founding family and himself an architect, will advise us as initiator of the project throughout the semester.

Relational Planning

Spatial planning is political intervention in the social and physical organization of society. They usually result from compromises resulting from the use and negotiation of power. Its essence is also shaped by its location, time and imagination: even if planning pursues the best intentions, its effect is always pros and cons distributed throughout space; and any planning definition inevitably struggles with the double uncertainty that both its external conditions (i.e. the world it wants to influence) and our internal understanding of it (i.e. the way we interpret the world) are constantly changing. How can we think of planning as a relative, as a processual, programmatic-plastic influence on and in a world in constant change?

In this elective module we examine concrete urban development plans of recent years in and for Bremen. In doing so, we ask about the political practice that becomes aware of them, examine their understanding of space and society, and identify which human and non-human actors were and are involved in their processes.

BA 2.1|2.3 elective module architectural photography.

Lecturers Nikolai Wolff in collaboration with Eberhard Syring

Photographing Architecture - Looking Back to the Future - Second Modernist Buildings in Bremen (1995 to 2010)

Photos are an important medium of representation in architecture. They show, explain and communicate buildings and rooms, help to understand, classify or sell architecture, can document and explain, but also lie.

This course is about getting to know the basics of architectural photography theoretically and practically and trying them out for yourself. Each participant gets one or two buildings, which he or she photographs according to different tasks and criteria. The photographs and the experiences gained in taking them are discussed, analysed, selected and presented together and in individual discussions.

In a workshop at the beginning of the course technical basics of architectural photography will be learned. Lectures offer insights into the backgrounds, origins, leitmotifs and artistic and commercial developments of architectural photography by means of illustrated examples.

The course supports the research and publication project "Bremen and its Buildings 1980 to Today". The content is about the phase of the "Second Modernity" in Bremen (1995 to 2010). Selected photos will then be published on the information platform "architekturfuehrer-bremen.de" or possibly in an exhibition.

BA 3.2 Architecture in cultural and social histories. Context II

Lecturers Part 1: Prof. Dr. Eberhard Syring Part 2: Prof. Dr. Claudia Kromrei

Tutor: Jesse Rahn

Part 1: Architecture - Idea, Structure, History (Syring) Part 2: Thought/Building/Language (Kromrei)

In the first half of the semester (Syring) - based on the architectural foundations of the 1st semester - a first connection to architectural-theoretical questions is introduced with a deepening of individual areas of investigation. Thus, basic architectural-theoretical terms such as "space", "history", "aesthetics", "language" are used, "Modernity" under the microscope. Common "city walks" contribute to the vividness of the learned.

The second half of the semester (Kromrei) deals with the simultaneity of architectural theory, architectural history and sociology on the basis of a manageable architectural theme: the residential or summer house designed by architects for themselves. From about 20 completely different protagonists a short text and a small house, which he designed for himself, is studied. In addition to the analysis of idea and theme, space and form, material and construction, proportion and dimension, expression and effect of the house, we also search for the connection between theory and practice - of thought, building and language.

Basics of the urban development design

For the Bremen city centre in the area of the Mitte multi-storey car park we are looking for urban development possibilities (analysis, plan: public/private, parcelling and spatial model, building typology assessment). We prepare a framework plan for the study area and evaluate it on the part of the "urban planning" department. Accompanying theory on the formal-legal side of urban planning (spatial planning, urban development, urban land-use planning and approval of building projects). BA 4.4 Building physics and plant engineering Dozenten

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Michaela Hoppe

Tutoren: Luna Grommes, Lasse Röthemeyer

Fundamentals of energy-efficient construction

Using a terraced house in Halen - a housing estate built between 1955 and 1962 by the architecture firm Atelier 5 - as an example, the study examines how design concept, building construction and building technology interact - and what design scope architects have today in view of increasing demands on the energy efficiency of buildings.

For this purpose, the original design - using existing construction drawings and component superstructures from the time of origin - is geometrically recorded and evaluated in terms of building physics. The next step is to reconstruct the house with contemporary materials. The ground plan and section are retained in their geometry. However, the exterior wall structures and their parts must/can be changed - in awareness of the associated spatial changes. The aim is to reinterpret the building to meet the requirements of the current Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV 2016).

Performance Inventory analysis, energetic evaluation; development of a construction and material concept according to current energetic requirements (EnEV 2016); presentation in floor plan, section, view and detail; presentation; written summary of the results in a brochure;

Dozenten Prof. Maria Clarke

INTERRELATIONS reciprocal relationship in a static or dynamic connection between parts, in which a change of one part always entails a change of the other part. The parts can be objects, physical processes, thoughts or their properties.

An essential aspect in the design of houses lies in the spatial, constructive, technical and material logic. These points have a direct influence on the building down to the last detail.

Location, function, space, development, zoning, flexibility, orientation and scale must be clarified in the design together with economic and technical framework conditions. In addition, a basic idea should be developed for the task at hand, which can be derived, for example, from the construction, the material or the use.Das inhaltliche Ziel des Moduls ist die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Abhängigkeiten im Wohnungsbau.

BA 5.4 Presentation and design

Dozenten Prof. Katja-Annika Pahl, MA Eike Harant, Tutor: Patrick Kappacher Room Images II In the course of the design process, ideas are repeatedly represented and presented. From the idea finding up to the presentation at a builder's, a communication about drafts without visualizations is hardly imaginable. The means of representation and methods vary in the course of the design process, as do the addressees of the presentation.

On the basis of a school building by the architect Arne Jacobsen, pictures and models will be created this semester which will give the viewer a new view of this special building. Thus, the effect of light and shadow as well as colour and material on the appearance of a building and space will be examined. Techniques of visualization and image processing as well as model building will be learned and tested and skills in dealing with the programs Photoshop and Cinema4D will be taught.

Dozenten Prof. Ingo Lütkemeyer

Design for a cultural centre in Buchholz, Nordheide The city of Buchholz intends to bundle various cultural activities in the construction of a new cultural centre near the railway station. In addition to an event hall with a stage, the building will house the city library and the city archive, as well as other uses. A building is to be designed for the site, which is located in an exposed location, that brings together the various uses and at the same time offers solutions for the relatively complex requirements of the location. The technical questions will be dealt with in module 2.2/2.3.

Dozenten Prof. Ingo Lütkemeyer

Project deepening of technical and constructive contents for a cultural centre in Buchholz in the Nordheide Due to the exposed location of the building site between a development road, a bridge and the immediate vicinity of the Bremen - Hamburg railway line, extensive technical issues have to be dealt with and solved. These range from constructional and physical issues (e.g. noise insulation, thermal insulation, solar protection) to technical aspects (ventilation, etc.) and requirements for interior quality. The interactions with the design to be developed in module 1.2/1.3 are to be investigated.

Bremen's identity is derived from economic epochs. Whether the Hanseatic League, industrialisation, the port industry and logistics or aerospace and automotive industry, every era and every branch leaves its mark on society, its buildings and infrastructures..

Airport Bremen, 1946

The question arises as to how the changes in mobility, production and communication will affect urban districts,

like Bremen as a metropolis? Which framings need to be rethought, which need to be repositioned in order to provide the necessary development opportunities for a vital city?

In close exchange with local stakeholders and representatives of the Chamber of Employees and the Chamber of Commerce, we are looking for visions of the future for a productive city of Bremen using the example of the airport city/Neustadt in the context of the city region.

Thought/Building/Language - Reference/Argument

In architecture, there are buildings and spatial forms, positions and postures that are so convincing that they are repeatedly referred to. They serve as role models, rather as references and often as arguments for something more general, sometimes also for one's own work.

In order to take our references and arguments freely, but on the basis of a comprehensive knowledge of important protagonists and positions - or even to establish our own positions - we are investigating the connection between theory and practice - of thought, building and language - on the basis of the theoretical and practical work of architects who have one thing in common: they have written and built, they have expressed their reflection on the interpretation of architecture and their own attitude both in writings and in buildings.

On the basis of a selected text and three buildings, on the one hand the building idea and on the other hand the idea and theme of the houses are named, described, interpreted and criticised.

We are engulfed by communication. We carry communication media on our bodies, our urban environment communicates with us constantly: verbally, non-verbally, visually, and in written form. Messages are fast, concise, immediate, demanding response and attempting to influence the spectator. Deciphering our environment beyond textual form, can provide us with information, which will improve our capability to function and communicate with others in space. In this studio we will focus on Domshof in Bremen, and interpret the space into codified visual lan- guage, using various surveying and mapping technics. In the latter half of the studio we will experiment with live-performative communication, to attempt and transform its spatial collective ambiance.

Performance Student work and presentations are in groups. Student presence during

meetings is mandatory, unless a student is absent for class project as- signment. During the semester there will be 3 assignments: 1. Domshof documentation in presentation & hardcopy format (plans,

photos, maps, diagrams, etc) + Summary of obsolete communication technics + Domshof communication proposal.

2. Domshof onsite public communication experiment + installation (if applicable): Live at the Domshof.

3. Domshof final presentation Power Point & hardcopy format: experi- ment description & review: plans, notes, results, process documenta- tion, etc.

MA 5.2 elective module

Dozenten Prof. Dr. Christian v. Wissel

City and Work Work is more than profane fundraising. As a purposeful and planned activity it is part of what makes people human: through work we create the world according to our ideas, work shapes our society and through our work we define in parts who we are. In other words: work is the "central space" of our existence: we go to school in order to gain access to this space, clothe our social position with it and hope that it will also be able to secure our stay in the spaces "behind work", i.e. in old age or during illness and unemployment. It is therefore not surprising that gainful employment and its change have a lasting influence on the function and shape of our cities.

In the elective module we will explore this production of space through research work in small research projects. We will focus on such forms of work in the sense of a "productive city", -The main focus of the research is on the development of urban markets and divisions that shape urban spaces through urban and material production (i.e. through industrial processes, additive/digital manufacturing or on the basis of the exercise of a craft in the city). The offer is linked to the design module "Interspace", but can also be selected independently of it. It is also part of the offer for students of urban and regional development at the University of Bremen as well as the Art and Design Department of the HfK.

Performance Written and/or artistic-architectural elaboration of a paper. This includes the research, analysis and documentation/Visualization of the respective research project. The project is carried out in small interdisciplinary groups.
