A survey of dental practitioners has revealed that the number one concern in implant dentistry is appropriate treatment planning. The incidence of peri-implant disease has underscored the importance of assessing host-specific risk factors, such as genetic, systemic, pharmacological and inflammatory predispositions. In addition, outcomes measurements have changed from implant survival to patient satisfaction and therefore have placed a premium on differential treatment planning.

Dr. Sadowsky will review the criteria for selecting a 3-unit fixed dental prosthesis vs. implant restoration. Indications for an implant supported fixed dental prosthesis vs. one implant per tooth will be analyzed. Considerations that impact the decision to use a cantilever implant restoration will be discussed. The decision to splint multiple implants has been controversial and we will review the best available evidence and employ an algorithm for selection. Attention to the viability of short or tilted implants will offer minimally invasive alternatives. This includes the proven use of restorations with a higher crown to implant ratio than would be acceptable with teeth. Considerations for designing cement-retained and screw-retained implant prostheses will be identified. Finally, an aggregate risk assessment will be introduced to link to a customized recall schedule for implant prosthetic patients.

The original ad modum Branemark prototypic implant prosthesis for the restoration of the edentulous arch has progressed through permutations of design and materials to meet clinician- and patient-related needs. This has placed a premium on understanding complete denture principles and using an evidence-based approach to decision making. Protocols will be presented to aid the practitioner in determining if a fixed or removable implant prosthesis is best for the patient. Given the prosthetic modality and the arch, the number of implants have been shown to be important and will be reviewed. The anchorage system, such as solitary anchors, Locator abutments or splinted bar designs, will be evaluated in differential treatment planning. Protocols for design of the fixed implant complete denture will be discussed. The biologic and mechanical advantages of new replacement materials for resin metal design will be enumerated.

You Will Learn How to apply best available evidence to optimal implant treatment planning decision making The difference between tooth-borne and implant restorative principles How to apply minimally invasive concepts in implant treatment planning To become familiar with the role of new materials for implant restorative options The role of complete denture principles in implant treatment planning and execution How to minimize biological and mechanical complications

Saturday and Sunday | April 25 – 26, 2020Vintners Resort | Santa Rosa, CA

Join us for a rejuvenating weekend program at the Vintners Resort in Sonoma County. Two outstanding speakers, L. Stephen Buchanan, DDS, and Foroud Hakim, DDS, will present lectures on Saturday and Sunday mornings, leaving your afternoons free to enjoy the spa at the Vintners Resort and the multitude of wineries and activities in Sonoma County.

Endodontics: Everything has Changed Except the AnatomyL. Stephen Buchanan, DDSEverything in the field of endodontics—the concepts, the tools and the techniques—is changing at an accelerated rate. How do we discern which of these will improve our endodontic diagnoses and procedures and which will go by the wayside? The only thing that hasn’t changed is the anatomy of our patients’ roots and the complex root canal systems hidden within them because this is where the disease state lives. Fortunately, dental science marches on, bringing more profound changes in the last five years than the previous 20. This presentation will explore and demonstrate the best tools and practices from around the world, including dynamic guidance for calcified access, multi-sonic irrigation, heads-up microscopy and how bio-ceramic filling materials have greatly simplified our 3D obturation methods.

You Will Learn How and when dynamic guidance can be used in endodontics to empower minimally

invasive access procedures and to control cutting accuracy to within 1/4 to 1/2 mm How irrigation tools and techniques have advanced and how to use them How heads-up microscopy can extend dentists’ careers How bio-ceramics can be used with simplified techniques to three dimensionally fill the most

complex root canal systems in seconds

Restorative Dentistry in Contemporary Practice: Overcoming Daily ChallengesForoud Hakim, DDS, MBAOne can argue that we are in the most rewarding era of restorative dental practice. The explosion in advanced material science, technologies, new deliveries and the digital era fulfill this promise, but also create a unique challenge for the contemporary practitioner. How does one keep up with this boom? What materials should we consider migrating towards? What technologies will truly improve efficiency and patient care? Some key topics in Dr. Hakim’s presentation will include: contemporary adhesion principles, eliminating sensitivity, resin dentistry designed to last, ceramic selection and delivery, contemporary endodontic rehabilitation, analogue and digital impression capture, shade selection, minimally invasive approach to rehabilitation and efficiencies that go right to the bottom line.

You Will Learn Foolproof and lasting adhesion Case and tooth-based composite selection including bulk fill scenarios The materials and techniques needed for direct composite restorations Techniques to ensure predictable and accurate impression without remakes Substrate, occlusion and aesthetic demand-based ceramic selection and delivery Tips and tricks for both direct and indirect applications

Saturday and SundayMay 2 – 3, 2020

An inflamed molar tooth pulp can be extremely painful. Taking away a patient’s pain creates strong doctor-patient relationships. Have you ever felt that treating multirooted teeth is too challenging? It doesn’t have to be. While molar endodontics is deemed considerably more difficult than anterior or single rooted premolar root canal treatment, modern techniques make it easier. Has accessing a molar felt daunting enough for you to refer the patient to an endodontist? If yes, you are not alone. Surveys have shown that dentists see access preparation as a problematic step. How does cleaning and shaping work when several root canals are involved at the same time? What are the advantages of warm vs. cold obturation in molars? Are there potential risks in some techniques?

Easy-to-follow strategies are presented in an evidence-based manner that allow clinicians to develop immediate strategies in solving endodontic problems in their practices.

The Saturday lecture includes the underlying principles and clinical strategies for diagnosis, decision making, access and complete treatment of teeth requiring root canal therapy. Special tips for premolar and molar teeth are highlighted. Have you thought of switching to a different rotary preparation method? The newest science and systems in cleaning and shaping will be presented along with easy steps to build on. Simple and advanced methods of filling shaped root canals will be discussed. Case based discussions in 2D and 3D take any guesswork out of radiographic interpretation.

The Sunday intensive hands-on workshop is designed to focus on hands-on techniques. Esteemed endodontic instructors will lead live, follow-along demonstrations in the simulation laboratory and provide step-by-step instructions via printed handouts to supplement the in-person training. Participants will perform treatments on plastic models and extracted teeth, emphasizing clinical situations encountered in multirooted endodontics. Exercises include locating all canal orifices and offer detailed instructions.

Saturday LectureYou Will Learn Endodontic diagnoses and related treatment plans When to prescribe CBCT scans and know which scans to interpret with confidence To recognize new materials and trends in endodontics Access preparations that retain structural integrity, expose all orifices and allow unimpeded

entry into the root canals Easy canal length determination principles using electronic apex locators and

radiographic techniques Both basic concepts and solutions for complex cases Management of complications during endodontic therapy, pain control and

handling of emergency situations

Sunday WorkshopYou Will Learn To reinforce techniques and strategies taught in the lecture portion Cleaning and shaping procedures for single rooted and multirooted teeth using the

most effective hand instrumentation and current concepts in rotary instrumentation Root canal filling techniques using laterally compacted gutta-percha Root canal filling using several warm filling techniques

Two Saturdays: July 25 and August 22, 2020

This two-day radiation safety program is a combination of didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction designed to meet the requirements of the Dental Board of California. Upon registration, participants receive access to review course materials on our learning management website. It is recommended that you register as early as possible to give yourself ample time to review the course material prior to beginning the program.

You Will Learn Techniques for producing diagnostic-quality radiographs, including correct film development

and mounting Safety procedures and infection control techniques for handling radiographic equipment Procedures and techniques for producing digital radiographs and maintenance of digital sensors

On day one, after completing the didactic portion, participants must pass a written test with a minimum score of 75% on the information covered before they are allowed to proceed to the lab and clinical sessions. Candidates unsuccessful in passing the written exam will not be allowed to continue with the program and tuition will not be refunded. Students will then perform hands-on exercises on manikins and must complete all requirements for producing diagnostic-quality radiographs before proceeding to the clinical experience. Current radiation safety recommendations and procedures will be followed.

In order to be certified, participants are required to produce three diagnostic-quality, full-mouth surveys (either analog film or digital format) at their home dental offices, under the supervision and with the verification of a licensed supervising dentist. These surveys should be completed as in-office assignments, verified by the designated supervising dentist. On day two, these three surveys will be submitted and reviewed. “Having an RDAEF is invaluable because it frees me up to do more of the dentistry that I really enjoy doing. It can enhance your practice and allows you to concentrate on the dental procedures that are more technically difficult. We’ve had an RDAEF in our practice for a few years and could never imagine not having one.” —Dr. Barry Kami, Berkeley, CA

“I highly recommend the Dugoni School’s RDAEF program. I had an outstanding experience and appreciated the great faculty who helped guide me through the learning process. As a practicing RDAEF, I really enjoy being able to provide expanded treatment for our patients, and the positive response from our patients and the dental team has been amazing.” —Luis Contreras, RDAEF Class of 2019

Oral Surgery for General Practitioners:Comprehensive Training from A to Z

Saturday, August 29, 2020 Resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs, so-called Maryland bridges) with two metal retainer wings were introduced 40 years ago for a minimal invasive replacement of missing teeth. However due to various reasons, metal-ceramic RBFDPs are not considered a comparable treatment modality to implants by most dentists.

Cantilevered RBFDPs with a single ceramic retainer wing for anterior tooth replacement were introduced 25 years ago. They provide better aesthetics and are less invasive than two-retainer RBFDPs. Long-term data of this minimal invasive treatment option are available. Similar concepts are now also implemented for the replacement of posterior teeth and medium-term outcomes are comparable to single tooth implants.

This lecture course summarizes when RBFDPs present a favorable and less costly treatment modality and how to implement it successfully. Adequate treatment planning, minimally invasive tooth preparation within enamel and successful bonding to zirconia ceramic are the key issues to be successful. All clinical procedures will be explained and detailed videos will be shown.

You Will Learn Why RBFDPs evolved to single-retainer design When single-retainer RBFDPs are useful and not useful The longevity of single-retainer RBFDPs The advantages and disadvantages of single-retainer RBFDPs When RBFDP should bond long term Adequate diagnosis, pretreatment and treatment planning Details of all-ceramic RBFDPs To splint or not to splint? Replacement of canines and premolars Aftercare: how to prevent issues and solve problems The 10 most common mistakes in the application of RBFDPs
