The Flying Falcon COURAGE | CURIOSITY | CARE
30th November 2018
Headmaster
This week kicked off with all the boys and staff arriving at school on Monday morning wearing play clothes and wel-lington boots. We were off to plant trees in Harvard Hill Park. The boys joined Abundance London, The Woodland Trust, Grove Park School and many local neighbours in planting 200 trees in the Harvard Hill Park. This was a bril-liant way to bring the local community together to do something positive for the environment. It will be fantastic if some of our boys end up living in the local area and get to play with their children in the shade of these trees. I know in time, the school will benefit from the oxygen produced by them. Please click here to read more about this in the Chiswick Herald.
We had the Kidsout assembly as well on Monday, a charity we are supporting by donating gifts to needy children this Christmas. The response by the boys has been heartfelt, overwhelming and very positive. We welcomed Mr Knowles into school on Wednesday to do an assembly on our chosen charity ‘Marine Conservation Society’. He was full of energy and I have to say that I too learnt quite a few facts. The highlight of the assembly was the boys all looking at and holding a Megalodon tooth. This charity really resonates with the boys as they had the ownership of choosing the charity.
We have many of our Year 2 boys attending exams for Year 3 entry in the next few weeks. We wish them luck and want them to know that we are very proud of them. It was wonderful to go to the Prep School 10
th anniversary ball
last Saturday. I enjoyed reminiscing with so many of the parents whose boys had attended the Pre-Prep. I gave up trying to guess which year group they are in now, as I inevitably got it wrong. I could not believe how quickly their sons have grown up. Mr and Mrs Milne were at the ball to help Miss Buchanan and her team celebrate this mile-stone in the Prep’s history.
Mrs Knight visited us this week on Thursday. She had a great time helping out in the Nursery for an hour and joined the staff and boys for lunch. It was like old times having her in school.
If I did not get to see you at drop-off or pick-up this week, have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to our PA drinks on Friday 7
th December.
Comments from our Head Boy Leonardo:
I had a great time planting trees on Monday (and holding worms). Well done to Merlins for performing
their assembly again, we enjoyed it!

Nursery
Reception We kicked off the week, with a spot of gardening on Harvard Hill. The boys
came prepped, with their wellies and fleeces, ready to get their hands dirty.
A special thank you to Mrs Dromgoole and Mrs Benedetti, for joining us,
we are sure that you had as much fun as the boys did.
This week’s maths focus has been addition. The boys have been using a
range of strategies to solve addition number sentences including hopping
along number lines and counting objects. We have been very impressed
with their attitudes and willingness to make mistakes and learn from them.
Our new sounds in phonics this week have been y, z, zz and qu. The boys
have enjoyed reading and writing a range of words with these sounds.
We have continued our Nativity endeavours and have been focussing on
facing the audience as they deliver their lines. If you have your son’s cos-
tume, please could you bring it into school in a named bag ASAP, so we
can begin our dress rehearsals? This is
where the fun begins!
On Wednesday, the boys enjoyed a thrill-
ing assembly from our sponsored charity,
The Marine Conservation Society. The
boys got to hold a real megalodon’s tooth,
as well as learn about the importance of
keeping our oceans clean to protect the
marine wildlife.
Have a lovely weekend,
Reception team.
The boys had a wonderful time on Monday planting new trees in Harvard Hill—
thank you to all parents who came along to help.
The performance of the year is drawing ever closer! Only a few more days, so
please help your boys practise saying their line loudly and confidently over the
weekend. Also, your son needs white leggings and a white long sleeved top to
be brought in on MONDAY!!! The boys are welcome to go home straight
from the church on Tuesday but please let the teacher know if this will be the
case.
Next week is all about Christmas! Our nativity, the story of Christmas and
Christmas crafts. It’ll be so much fun. There will not be any Forest School on
Monday as we will be busy at our dress rehearsal. All of the teachers will be
taking part in Observation Week which is a week where we are able to visit
another classroom to observe. This will be in celebration of sharing ideas of
best practice.
On a different note, the nursery would like to gently remind parents how pre-
cious our book packs are! Please ensure you return the book packs complete –
story, prop and guidance sheet. If just one of these
elements is missing, it unfortunately puts the whole
pack out of action, meaning that it cannot be en-
joyed by the other children. Sadly, if you return an
incomplete book pack, your son will not be able to
take another one home until the missing pieces
have been returned.
Finally, amongst all of the Christmas fun, we will
be learning about the letter Oo and the number 10.
A very busy week ahead indeed! Make sure to get
lots of rest over the weekend!
Year 1
Year 2 Is it the 1st of December tomorrow already? Really?
The week started with all of the boys planting trees in the park beautifully. It
was a fantastic community feel and the boys had a super time outside planting
happily and carefully. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported
the boys at this wonderful event. Excitedly and patiently, we will keep an eye
on our trees!
The boys have been working diligently in English this week. Any guesses on
what we have been adding to our sentences?? Hopefully, the boys will be able
to explain the impact these words can have on our sentences….
In maths we have been exploring and discovering new strategies to solve sub-
traction problems including finding the difference of two numbers using a num-
ber line.
The boys should have received a kind-
ness advent calendar which you may want
to encourage them to use this December.
Let Mr. Grant know if you need any more
spare copies of this. Mr Forbes will be
busy decorating the school this weekend
and we are all very much looking forward
to the Christmas Fun Day next Friday.
It is getting chilly so wrap up warm this
weekend and have a lovely time.
The Year 2 Team
Incredibly, there are only two weeks left
until the end of term. The boys are now
singing Christmas songs around school –
it’s beginning to feel festive at the Falcons.
The highlight of the week has to be plant-
ing trees in the park on Monday. It was an
excellent morning and I fully believe that
the boys understood why we were doing it.
It is fantastic to see, that at their age, the
boys care so much about the environment;
hopefully this is something that will stick
with them as they go through the Falcons
and beyond.
We had a visit from the Marine Conservation Society on Wednesday, and again the
boys showed their care for the environment – I think a ‘beach clean’ could well be on
the horizon. In the classroom this week, the boys have been structuring stories in
English, identifying 2D and 3D shapes in maths and discussing the sun as a light
source in science.
The Year 1 team were delighted to see how passionately the boys spoke about the
Christmas gifts they will be buying for other children. It is wonderful to see how much
they care for other children their age, particularly those that may not be as fortunate
as themselves.

Art
Artist of the week is Reuben from Robins for his amazing Picasso-inspired self-portrait.
.
Music Congratulations to Bavo and
Jack-Daniel who won the Carol Competition this year. As it was such a tough decision, we have
two winners! Jack-Daniel's melody will be played as the 'Nativity Entrance Music' and
Bavo's lyrics have been turned into a song for the school to sing.
French
This week the older boys have
completed their learning of verbs
and nouns about toys. They
should all be able to tell you
what they want for Christmas
and what they don’t want. We
have begun to find out about
Christmas in France, starting
with the special events of 6th
December. Reception had an
excellent game of asking each
other for the toy they wanted
using their new vocabulary and
‘s’il vous plaît’ and ‘merci’.
