Big Loud Mountain co-founder Craig Wiseman can pinpoint the room in his building at 1111 16th Ave. S. where Garth Brooks allegedly signed his first recording deal when the place was owned by Capitol.

But as the management/publishing company best-known for developing Florida Georgia Line launches its new Big Loud re-cord label, it’s looking more like the self-contained structure of ’60s R&B hit factory Motown as a model than the typical coun-try major. The majors are noted for large staffs and deep rosters, and while they maintain in-house creative departments such as A&R and creative services, much of the artis-tic process is farmed out to other sources.

By contrast, Big Loud — which welcomes Clay Hun-nicutt as label president when he wraps his role as iHeartMedia executive vp/GM of national program-m ing on Ju ly 23 — has a smaller roster in mind as the imprint forms as an out-growth of already successful endeavors. Manager/partners Seth England and Vancouver-based Kevin “Chief” Zaruk guided FGL from a hopeful indie act to a multiplatinum Republic Nashville deal in approximately

18 months. Producer/partner Joey Moi (Nickelback, Jake Owen) ranked as country’s top producer on Billboard’s year-end charts. Big Loud Shirt Publishing maintains a small stable of songwriters, but they’re prolific talents including Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins, Sarah Buxton and Wiseman, whose collective recent works include “Dirt,” “Bartender,” “Drunk on a Plane,” “Sun Daze” and “Boys ’Round Here.”

Much like Berry Gordy Jr. in his early years, the top brass at the self-financed Big Loud label is unencumbered by stock-price

fluctuations, focused instead on making decisions about the product with an eye to-ward long-term investment.

“We only have to answer to ourselves and not to a board of accountants who are like, ‘If you don’t make your fourth-quarter sales, you’re in trouble,’ ” Zaruk says.

Big Loud is opening with just one act, Chris Lane, who kicks off a radio promotion tour with Hunnicutt and England on Aug. 3. They won’t be pushing a single,

simply laying groundwork for an EP toward the end of the year with radio expected to have a voice in choosing the first release from that batch of titles.

Lane exemplifies the Motown-like philosophy. Working through their own Hitsville Studios in Detroit, Gordy’s roster had a constant supply of material available from his in-house writers and had a team of instructors to coach them through their wardrobe, choreography and public presentation.

Lane is focused on “groove-oriented country,” England says, and because he was able to express that to the Big Loud writing staff, he has found a big core of his material within the same building where he’s cutting his songs.

“Two writers took it upon themselves to make him their project and didn’t take brand-new songs to the top of the pitch list,” England says. “They took them right to Chris and said, ‘I think this is what you mean.’ He’s hearing it and saying, ‘That’s exactly what I meant.’ ”

Meanwhile, as Lane goes through his development process, the team is experiencing it with him.

“When Chris went to vocal lessons, Joey went to vocal lessons, too, just so that he could learn the same vernacular and talk to Chris,” Wiseman notes.

While the Motown model is an influence, Big Loud won’t be replicating it entirely. Where the Hitsville crew was its own outpost in Michigan, Big Loud is in the center of Music Row, and the team has no intention of isolating itself from the rest of the country community.

“It can’t be a closed-door society,” Hunnicutt says. “This is not a cult, you know; we’re not shutting everybody else out.”

Hunnicutt was invited in for some obvious reasons. His radio background is a big advantage in a genre that relies more than most other formats on broad-casting to expose new material. But iHeartMedia — through its iHeartRadio digital platform, live events and TV specials — reaches beyond radio. That knowledge base, combined with his management skills, made him an attrac-tive executive to lead the Big Loud label foray.

“We needed somebody of his skill set to come in and kind of rein it all in,” Moi says.

While Hunnicutt has hit the ground running — he’s already in decision-making mode, even though his iHeartMedia tenure hasn’t ended — he’s being judicious in the process. He’s in the market for a promotion vice president and staff, though the label won’t rush its hiring decisions. Since there’s already a Big Loud team in place, the label can rely on some of the existing staff for some functions while it makes prudent and timely personnel decisions in other departments going forward. And, since those quarterly income statements aren’t the driving force in the company, the marketing tail isn’t wagging the dog. The number of artists on the roster is never likely to be huge, and the company’s executive size will ultimately be determined by the label’s output.

It’s a reverse-order process from many of the country indie labels that sprout up, most of them closing their doors after a brief run.

“A lot of them come to town, every [executive] is getting paid a lot of money, and they just find some kid walking by and throw something out there,” Wise-man says. “That’s not how we work.”

“We’re on our time table,” Hunnicutt adds. “We’ll do the right thing with the right people for the right reasons to make sure we have it right.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 20, 2015 | PAGE 4 OF 18

Jason Aldean’s “Tonight Looks Good on You” (Broken Bow) jumps 2-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 1). His 14th No. 1 score on the list increases by 4 percent to 50.2 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music. His first leader, “Why,” hit the top on the May 27, 2006 chart. With 14 No. 1s in that span, Aldean ties Brad Paisley for the third-most toppers in that stretch. Blake Shelton leads with 17 No. 1s in that nine-year-plus period, followed by Kenny Chesney (16).

Over on Hot Country Songs, Brantley Gilbert cracks the top 10 with “One Hell of an Amen” (Valory), which rises 11-9. It also makes a healthy jump on Country Airplay, lifting 5-2 (44.9 million, up 18 percent). The song is Gilbert’s fourth top 10 on Hot Coun-try Songs, following three No. 1s: “Country Must Be Country Wide” (2011), “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” (2012) and “Bottoms Up” (2014).

Gilbert co-wrote “Amen” with Mike Dekle and Brian Davis as a tribute to fallen soldier Kory Potts, who was like a brother to one of his best friends. “Seeing a song in-spired by people who touched my life touch the lives of people all over the country is an enormous feeling that words can’t de-scribe,” Gilbert tells Billboard. “It’s been amazing to watch this song work its way up the charts.

“But I think I can speak for my co-writers. What it’s done, and continues to do, off the charts is the true blessing. It’s all about fighting the good fight, and in the words of [Potts]: Bring it on.”

Paisley bursts into the top 10 on Country Airplay with “Crushin’ It,” up

11-10 with 30.8 million impressions (up 5 percent). He tallies his 33rd top 10, dating to his first, 1999’s “He Didn’t Have to Be” (also his first of 19 No. 1s). He notches his second top 10 of 2015: “Perfect Storm” swirled to No. 1 for

two weeks in January. “Crushin’ ” is the third single from Paisley’s album Moon-shine in the Trunk. He penned the beer-pun- flavored song with Kelley Lovelace and Lee Thomas Miller.

As previously reported, following the July 10 switch to a Friday retail global re-lease date, Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart now encompasses the following track-ing periods: sales and streaming reflect a Friday-through-Thursday week, and airplay covers Monday through Sunday. With the Aug. 1 Country Digital Songs chart mea-suring sales between July 10-16 after the prior chart reflected a one-time-only 11-day period (ending July 9) to account for the global street-date transition, only three songs show unit gains on the chart. Cam’s “Burning House” (Arista Nashville) bounds 36-16, up by 32 percent to 17,000 down-loads sold. “House” is the second single from Cam, following “My Mistake.” The

new track, the story of a failed rela-tionship, got a big boost when she played it l ive on the sy ndicated Bobby Bones Show on June 10. She also performed it

in her first two appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, May 29 and June 16. Also up on Country Digital Songs are Kenny Chesney’s new single “Save It for a Rainy Day,” a debut at No. 31 (9,000, up 21 percent), and Alan Jackson’s “Jim and Jack and Hank” (ACR/EMI/EMI Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), new at No. 49 (5,000, up 298 percent).

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 20, 2015 | PAGE 8 OF 18

SONGWRITERS HALL ADDS FOURFour figures who have had an influence on the edgy direction of current country music will be added to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame when the mem-bership swells to 200 with an Oct. 11 ceremony. Singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, Craig Wiseman (“Live Like You Were Dying,” “The Good Stuff”), Mark James (“Suspicious Minds,” “Always On My Mind”) and Even Stevens (“Suspicions,” “No Matter How High”) were an-nounced as the 2015 class on July 16.

Cash, as an artist, and Stevens, primarily through his association with Eddie Rabbitt, landed a series of progressive, driving hits on country radio in the 1980s when the genre was presented as a ballad-heavy format. Cash’s output often in-cluded metaphoric lyrics and beat-driven tempos through such titles as “Seven Year Ache,” “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” and “Ain’t No Money.” Stevens’ collaborations with Rabbitt and co-writer David Malloy included such rhythmic crossover titles as “Drivin’ My Life Away,” “I Love a Rainy Night” and “Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight.”

“We weren’t trying to change anything, but I do believe it did change with our help, and I think for the better sometimes,” says Stevens. “Country music used to be one of the rare boxes that you couldn’t expand out of, and most music’s not that way. We didn’t really try to change it. We just thought it could go to a bigger audience, and we were just really writing what we got off on.”

James, through an affiliation with Memphis-based producer Chips Moman, garnered mostly pop hits, including B.J. Thomas’ “Hooked On a Feeling,” a 1968 release that pushed boundaries with an overt drug reference at a time when songs mostly kept such allusions hidden.

“When you’ve really got it bad for somebody, it can be just like drugs,” ob-serves James. “It can be like booze, it can be like any of those things, because you’re addicted to somebody.”

Decades later, controlled substances — mostly weed — are commonplace in the lyrics of numerous country songs, including Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel,” Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow” and Florida Georgia Line’s “Sun Daze.”

Wiseman, as a co-owner of FGL’s management firm, Big Loud Mountain, has had a direct impact on the edginess of modern country. He co-wrote Kenny Chesney’s “Summertime” and “Young,” which were considered boundary-pushing songs in the early 2000s, and co-authored Blake Shelton’s hip-hop-influenced “Boys ’Round Here.” In his way, Wiseman is following a creative path similar to Cash, James and Stevens.

“They blended a few more elements besides just pure country and had this huge audience because of it,” he says. “Not to do that for the contrivance of it, or the money of it, but that’s where you naturally are. Everybody now is almost a blended mix.”

The new members will have their stories told in a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame display at the Music City Center, and their names will be embedded in the bricks on the sidewalk outside at Songwriters Square.

GOOD WORKSCountry’s connection with NASCAR is well-established, and the two enter-tainment forms will pair up again this fall when Travis Tritt takes a major role in helping Darrell and Michael Waltrip raise money for several charities.

Tritt is set to headline the Oct. 21 Champion’s Dinner during the sixth an-nual Waltrip Brothers’ Charity Championship (WBCC) in Franklin, Tenn. The dinner features both a live and silent auction of celebrity-signed memo-rabilia, part of a two-day event that funnels money to the Byrnes Memorial Fund, Feed the Children and Motor Racing Outreach.

Fox NFL analyst Terry Bradshaw, who peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard country singles chart with a 1976 cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” will host the dinner, which seats 500.

The 2014 WBCC benefit raised $450,000.

TWEET OF THE WEEKDo chickens have lips? According to Country Radio Hall of Fame member Gerry House (@GerryHouse1), the government says it’s not a question you need to answer through life experience:

“The Center for Disease Control issued a statement warning owners not to kiss their chicken. Spawning a generation of lonely angry chickens.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 150 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 104 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 20, 2015 | PAGE 12 OF 18

The late-night phone call has become a standard theme in modern country music.

Lady Antebellum rolled to multiplatinum success with the booty call bal-lad “Need You Now,” Luke Bryan practically begged for a midnight visit in “Crash My Party,” and the Eli Young Band grappled with a day-after apology in “Drunk Last Night.” Lee Ann Womack tackled the after-hours connection twice, setting aside her better judgment in “I May Hate Myself in the Morn-ing” and willfully refusing to pick up the phone in “Last Call.”

A Thousand Horses’ sophomore single, “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial,” puts a new spin on the topic. The character in the song has pretty much disappeared since a fight with his better half. He has indeed been drinking, and it’s led to a sobering thought: He misses his woman.

“We created this story and spread it into this confession, more than a drunk phone call thing,” says Horses lead vocalist Michael Hobby. “We wanted to make it kind of romantic, more than just a pathetic, I-got-hammered-and-I-called-you type song.”

The “we” is not the Horses, but another four-man ensemble that included Hobby. A few years ago, he and three songwriting friends — Cadil-lac Three drummer Neil Mason (“Days of Gold,” “Payback”), Corey Crowder (“I’m Comin’ Over”) and singer-songwriter Cale Dodds — set a regu-lar Monday-night songwriting appointment with a lax, informal code.

“The four of us would get together around 5 o’clock and bring some beers and kind of do the anti-Music Row write, where you just kind of all hang out with your buddies,” Mason says. “You’re not really on a timetable, and we might write some-thing, and we might not.”

It was Mason who brought the title to the room, though its origins are a mystery even to him.

“I can’t tell you exactly where that idea came from,” he says. “It was prob-ably sitting at a bar thinking about not calling a girl that I, you know, might have wanted to.”

He might have wanted to share the title, too, though he wasn’t in a hurry. They tried several other song ideas on this particular writing session, and none of them seemed to go anywhere. Since they were at a creative standstill, he decided it was time to unveil “Drunk Dial.”

“When there’s four guys in a room, and you all have to agree on what you’re writing, it can be a little harder,” he says. “So I kind of had that one sitting in my back pocket, kind of holding on to it to see when the time was right, be-cause I felt like that was an idea that was going to kind of write itself once I threw it out there.”

Mason was on the money.“It didn’t take us very long,” Hobby says. “It felt really good, and everybody

was kind of firing on all pistons that day, which happens sometimes — some-times you don’t fire on any pistons and you just leave.”

They kicked it off with the guy’s half of the conversation: He calls, asks her not to hang up, concedes he’s been drinking, then tells her that a song — their song — came on the radio, reminding him how much he’s been missing her. Searching for a way to describe the song, they mumbled through a passage that became a simple “whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh” melody, creating a lead-in to the “Drunk Dial” chorus.

The chords are firm and manly, while the lyrical tone is conciliatory, par-ticularly in the second verse when he offers to “take the blame if you want me to have it.” It’s an important step if the couple is to survive.

“You can go round and round in circles, drunk or not drunk, with some-

body about the past,” Mason says. “But at some point, you got to go, ‘Al-right, we’ve got to play all our cards [to] get past all the stuff that’s already happened.’ ”

In the closing vamp, that “whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh” section overlaps with the “Drunk Dial” hook, wrapping it all with a tidy bow.

“That whole song is basically the same chord progression,” Mason notes, “so all of those melodies work all at the same time.”

Crowder was overseeing the demo that they built during the session, so he sang lead. Hobby took a swing at it, too, leaving them with two different versions.

“Drunk Dial” got pitched around Music Row, though they didn’t find any takers. Meanwhile, Hobby brought the song to A Thousand Horses, and the band thought it fit their swaggering Southern-rock sound well.

“We worked it up at rehearsal, and then we started playing it at shows, and that’s the true test,” says guitarist Zach Brown. “When we played it at shows, people were digging it, so we kept on.”

The group — including bassist Graham DeLoach and guitarist Bill Satcher — wedged that song in with a couple of others for a formal demo session, cutting the first public version of “Drunk Dial” with Jason Aldean’s drummer, Rich Redmond, sitting in. McGhee Management got that version of the song to SiriusXM, which started spinning it on the Highway channel, leading to a decent stream of iTunes sales.

With that success behind them, they decided to make an album’s worth of material at the home studio of producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton,

Sturgill Simpson). They recut “Drunk Dial” during those sessions, and though that iteration never got released, it was part of a CD that Republic Nashville president Jimmy Harnen heard.

“We cut some good magic on that,” says Brown. “I mean, it got us a record deal.”

Republic budgeted for more sessions, and the band set up shop at the South-ern Ground recording studio, where the staff had difficulty believing Zac Brown’s building was hosting another Zach Brown.

Zach “could use that name as a get-out-of-jail ticket,” Cobb jokes. The Horses revised the basic “Drunk Dial” tracks from the sessions at Cobb’s

house, rerecording the drum track and redoing the guitars to get a more ag-gressive sound, aided in part by an open-E tuning that allows the strings to ring longer. They also did a more complete backing vocal track with two of their three female background singers — Kristen Rogers and Whitney Cole-man — joining Brown to give it a “Sweet Home Alabama” flavor.

“It added more weight,” Cobb says of the final vocal mesh. “Those guys have the three full-time background singers, not to mention the other guys in the band can sing, too. So it’s great, it’s very classic.”

Thanks in part to its satellite-radio exposure, “Drunk Dial” was originally intended as the lead single when Republic rode the Horses to terrestrial radio, but “Smoke” supplanted it when it was written just two days before the final sessions began. “Smoke” eventually rose to No. 1 on Country Airplay, and “Drunk Dial” was subsequently released to radio through Play MPE on June 15, the day after the CMA Music Festival closed.

“ ‘Drunk Dial’ is kind of the sister song of ‘Smoke,’ ” says Brown. “If you like ‘Smoke,’ I think you would like ‘Drunk Dial.’ That’s kind of who we are as a band.”

It’s lodged at No. 43 in its third charted week on Country Airplay, helping establish the core sound for the band. Seems like they made a good call.

“I have the perfect-sized head that will fit into just about any hat.”That’s Smokey Rivers’ theory behind his longevity at KPLX (99.5 The Wolf)

Dallas, where he celebrated his 20th anniversary earlier this month.“Over the years, I’ve done a lot of different duties, and I rarely say no. So if

they need me to do something, I can do it,” says Rivers, the station’s assistant PD/midday host who, during his tenure at The Wolf, has also served as its PD, morning host and research department head at various times. “I’m a pretty flexible guy, and that has served me well.”

In that time, Rivers has earned a reputation as a straight shooter and all-around likable guy, making him well-regarded not just among his peers, but along Music Row as well. “I want to treat people like I know I want to be treated, because there are enough jerks in the world,” he ex-plains. “I don’t need to add to it.”

He also appears to have mastered the art of time management. Working a five-hour airshift — all of it live — wouldn’t seem to leave time for much else, in-cluding his duties scheduling music and doing pro-duction and ratings analysis, but Rivers says that with the exception of after-work appearances, he usually manages to get home to his family every day by 6 p.m. “I’m not ashamed to say I’m a real Ward Cleaver kind of guy,” he admits.

In his 20 years at The Wolf — and 32 in radio — Riv-ers says the two biggest changes he’s seen have been PPM and the social media explosion. As a self-described “research nerd,” he says PPM has been a positive. “I love digging into that stuff. PPM is a treasure trove of information now. It’s almost as close to real time as we can get.

“There’s always a story there somewhere, and I like to dig out those stories,” he continues. “For me, it’s fun. [PPM] can be a little frustrating, but that’s why I like to try to encourage younger people in the business to really know how PPM works. Don’t just accept the number that you get without knowing where that number came from, how that number was achieved and what you can do to in-fluence that number next time, because you can.”

Rivers thinks PPM has “increased our understanding of how people really

use radio ... Once you begin to understand where these numbers come from and how people truly use radio, then it takes some of the mystery and some of the fear out of it ... It’s a reminder that people aren’t glued to us all the time and people do have lives, but if you do your job they’ll be back.”

As for social media, he says, “We have so many ways of interacting with the audience now. It can be a little overwhelming.” But it also has a fun side for the self-described “weather nut,” who has slept at the station many nights as a re-sult of severe weather in Dallas.

“When the weather gets bad here we can do a lot more on our Facebook page and on our Twitter than we can on the air,” he says. “We can still be the music station that we need to be, but we can also inform our listeners, give them a lot of

real-time, detailed weather information online, and it doesn’t take away from the on-air product. That helps flesh out the Wolf brand even more ... [so they] depend on us for more than Keith Urban [songs].”

Rivers worries that many younger jocks are getting too distracted by social media to focus properly on their real job, which is the on-air product. “Nobody’s getting bonused on how many likes you get” on Facebook, he adds. “I know I’m not. My bonus is based on the rank of 25-54, so that’s what I’m worried about.

“You’ve got to take care of business. You’ve got to take care of the station. You’ve got to make sure that you’re doing good radio,” he says. “These other things

are important for you to reach the audience in another way, but the main way is still talking into the mic ... If that’s not always the first thing you do every day, then the rest of this stuff isn’t going to do you any good.”

Looking ahead to the next 20 years, Rivers says the advantage of the coun-try format is its “6 to 60” appeal. “If you get into this format, you can stay here forever. You never grow out of it. You will always be relevant as long as you do your job, do your homework, stay up with things and pay attention to what’s going on — and you can relate that on the air.

“I should be able to do this until they put me in the ground,” he jokes. “And that’s the beauty of country.”
