In Morris’ eyes, that link with Ballerini sig- nifies a change that Lynne would appreciate. “It’s kicking in the door on genre line,” she says. “I don’t listen to music in terms of just bracketing it in a genre, and I think for two country females to be in that category, I think it’s definitely paving the way for people to listen to country music without bounds and not consider it a separate entity.” The acts see themselves as friends within that group rather than rivals. “It’s really easy to get competitive,” allows Ballerini, “but I’m a fan of hers, and she told me that she’s a fan of mine. The title to Maren Morris’ album Hero carries a bit of irony. It’s drawn from the chorus of “I Wish I Was,” a song about a real-life breakup in which she had to play the bad guy: “I’m not the hero in the story.”

But little more than a year since Columbia of-ficially released her first single to radio, Morris is filling a hero’s shoes. She and “Humble and Kind” singer-songwriter Lori Mc Kenna are the only country acts nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2017. She won the Country Music As-sociation’s best new artist trophy and sang both her first two hits — “My Church” and “80s Mer-cedes” — on NBC’s prestigious Saturday Night Live. Morris launched her first headlining dates, the Hero Tour, in New York on Feb. 5, and she can see it in the eyes of her fans at meet-and-greets: She has become an icon for many of them already.

“It’s really powerful to me and emotional,” she says. “That’s the whole point is just to bring people together in a really positive way, and laugh together and cry together and just be connected through a simple thing of a few chords. I consider it an honor.”

Her fan base is not the only group in which Morris is a leader these days. Her rise in the business comes as part of a communal wave among artists. She’s romantically linked to RCA singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd; she shared a house for much of 2016 with former American Idol contestant Kree Harrison; she met her producer, busbee (Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum), through

fellow artist Lucie Silvas; and the Hero liner notes are littered with thanks to other acts who gave her a leg up: Urban, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town and Chris and Morgane Stapleton.

Even Morris’ biggest Grammy nomination is something of a team accomplishment. She’s in the running for the all-genre best new artist award alongside Kelsea Ballerini. It’s the first time in history that the Grammys have included two current country artists in that category at the same time (the closest the Recording Acad-emy ever came was in the Feb. 21, 2001, cer-emony when Brad Paisley was a finalist along with winner Shelby Lynne, who was shaking off the country label while working a rock album, I Am Shelby Lynne).

In Morris’ eyes, that link with Ballerini sig-nifies a change that Lynne would appreciate.

“It’s kicking in the door on genre line,” she says. “I don’t listen to music in terms of just

bracketing it in a genre, and I think for two country females to be in that category, I think it’s definitely paving the way for people to listen to country music without bounds and not consider it a separate entity.”

The acts see themselves as friends within that group rather than rivals.

“It’s really easy to get competitive,” allows Ballerini, “but I’m a fan of hers, and she told me that she’s a fan of mine. It’s really cool to be able to root each other on, even though we’re the new

girls. And it’s really important to have more than one.”Morris is part of a slow rebalancing act in country. The genre overloaded on

males during the bro-country era — roughly 2012-2015 — and outside of Lam-bert and Carrie Underwood, it was rare to find a solo female inside the top 20. The ascent of Morris and Ballerini helped women regain a tad more promi-nence on country radio, the very medium Morris celebrated in “My Church.”

That song, in particular, represents the multiple influences at work in her music, paying homage to Hank Williams and Johnny Cash in the lyrics while rolling pop-influenced programming elements and the gospel-based McCrary Sisters into the production.

“I grew up listening to a lot of classic country, and I think that shows in my songwriting,” says Morris. “I pay such tribute to the Nashville songwriting craft on my record because that’s just how I’ve learned to write songs. But also soni-cally, there’s a lot of different sounds being represented, so it’s cool to pay tribute to the past but also be optimistic about the future of the genre.”

Similar to Lambert and Stapleton, Morris is working in a space that overlaps between hooky commercial country and the raw Americana format. She per-formed a year ago on the Cayamo Cruise (billed alongside Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Buddy Miller, Jason Isbell and Angaleena Presley), and she heads back out to sea in the 2017 installment of Cayamo in the week after the Grammys. That musical association connects her nicely as well with Sturgill Simpson, whose all-genre album of the year nomination for A Sailor’s Guide to Earth shocked plenty of observers. She opened for him in 2013, when she was still unsigned and he was doing a one-month residency at a small Nashville club, The Basement.

“I just remember thinking back then, ‘Holy crap, this guy’s voice is so good’ — it reminded me so much of Waylon Jennings, and it’s just a really classic voice,” she says. “He’s found a niche and a fan base that really identifies with him, and they’re not just country fans.”

Morris’ own voice is what cemented her working relationship with busbee, who sat next to her at a small, private songwriters round in Nashville.

“Feeling her soulful vocal ability mixed with an incredible accuracy of technique, I’d never heard anyone sing like that,” he says. “I just had to be involved, and that’s what started this whole thing for me, just hearing her do what she does.”

Her Hero journey adds another chapter with the Grammys on Jan. 12. Whether she comes away a winner or remains a four-time nominee, it has brought ad-ditional focus to one of country’s current artist-development successes. Only recently has Morris had a chance to start considering how to follow it up.

“There’s no grace period between album one and album two,” she says. “But I have some time set aside in a couple of months to really sit down and start writ-ing again. There’s a lot of life left in Hero, and a tour, so I’m taking it one day at a time. The songs will come as they come, and I’m excited because I haven’t gotten to be really creative in a while. I’m excited to get back and do what I do and just write a song.”

It’s a big part of how she found her own voice in a bigger community.

The Devil Don’t Sleep (Valory/Big Machine Label Group), the fourth studio album from Brantley Gilbert, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart (dated Feb. 18), shifting 77,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 66,000 are from traditional album sales, making the set the top-selling album across all genres. Gilbert earns his second No. 1 on the list, following 2014’s Just as I Am.

On the all-genre Billboard 200, Devil launches at No. 2, matching the debut and peak of Just, which arrived with 211,000 copies sold in its first week. Before that, 2010’s Halfway to Heaven marked his breakthrough, peaking at Nos. 2 and 4, respectively, on Top Country Albums and the Billboard 200.

Gilbert had a hand in writing all 16 tracks on the Dann Huff-produced Devil, including lead single “The Weekend,” which hurtles 14-9 to become Gilbert’s fifth top 10 on Hot Country Songs.

Meanwhile, Lauren Alaina’s second full-length, Road Less Travelled (19/Interscope/ Mercury Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), arrives at No. 3 on Top Country Albums (13,000). Wild-f lower, her first proper LP — following two top 10 American Idol collections, after she placed second on the series’ 2011 season — debuted and peaked at No. 2 that October.

On Hot Country Songs, Road’s title-cut lead single, which Alaina wrote with Jesse Frasure and Meghan Trainor, journeys to a new peak (17-12).

‘STAR’ POWER Thomas Rhett racks his seventh Country Airplay No. 1, as “Star of the Show” (Valory) rises 2-1 (42.5 million, up 1 percent). The song, which Rhett wrote with his father, Rhett Akins, and Ben Hayslip, is the fifth and final planned single from his album Tangled Up. It follows the No. 1s “Crash and Burn” (Sept. 26, 2015, one week), “Die a Happy Man” (Jan. 2, 2016, six weeks) and “T-Shirt” (June 18, one week). (Fourth single “Vacation” hit No. 30 in September 2016.)

“I can’t believe [“Star of the Show”] is my seventh No. 1,” Rhett tells Billboard. “It’s the perfect way to close out Tangled Up. This one is particularly special, as it’s the first No. 1 that my dad and I wrote together, so it means a lot to both of us.”

Although “Star” is the first No. 1 that Rhett co-wrote with Akins, his dad co-penned (with other writers) his first two leaders: “It Goes Like This” (2013) and

“Get Me Some of That” (2014).

HE’S ‘BACK’ “Body Like a Back Road” (MCA Nashville), the first single from Sam Hunt’s up-coming album, marks his highest debut on Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay and Country Digital Song Sales.

The track bounds in at No. 2 on Hot Country Songs, besting the No. 16 entrance of “Drinkin’ Too Much” on the Jan. 28-dated chart.

With its No. 21 start on Country Airplay (12.7 million in audience), “Body” is easily Hunt’s high-est arrival. Previously, his debut single, “Leave the Night On,” was his strongest, beginning at No. 53 before becoming his first of four No. 1s.

On Country Digital Song Sales, “Body” bows at the summit, selling 53,000 downloads in its first week. Before that, Hunt had entered at a No. 3 high with “Drinkin’ Too Much” (26,000, Jan. 28). He notches his third Country Digital Song Sales leader, following “Take Your Time” (12 weeks) and “House Party” (three), both in 2015.

‘OLD’ IS NEW Zac Brown Band’s “My Old Man” (Southern Ground/Elektra/Warner Atlantic Reprise) jumps aboard Country Airplay at No. 26, with 7.9 million in audience. On Hot Country Songs, it begins at No. 49.

The acoustic-driven song previews the band’s May 12 studio album Welcome Home, produced by Dave Cobb.

“Man” arrives as the second-highest debut of the band’s 21 Country Airplay appearances, trailing only “Homegrown,” which debuted at No. 23 (Jan. 23, 2015). It went on to become ZBB’s 11th of 13 No. 1s to date.

SUPER BOWL AFFIRMS COUNTRY’S PLACELady Gaga may have owned the longest stretch of time with her halftime show at Super Bowl LI, but country subtly asserted its cultural relevance in numerous ways.

Luke Bryan’s a cappella version of the national anthem was a bold move with a song that’s widely recognized as a challenge. Bryan found a key that worked and delivered it in a classic manner, saving the bulk of the embel-lishments for the end and effectively deflecting most potential criticisms. Given the increasing attention that has been placed upon “The Star-Spangled Banner” since Colin Kaepernick stopped standing for it, that’s significant.

Bryan was hardly alone in the flurry surrounding the NFL’s marquee match. Fox TV cameras spotted Kenny Chesney several times in a luxury box with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Zac Brown Band introduced new single “My Old Man” during the pre-game show, one day before Elektra officially released it to radio on Feb. 7.

Additional acts got mileage out of their Super Bowl affiliations. Lady An-tebellum and Tyler Farr played a pre-game show that was part of a larger ex-perience that cost as much as $12,000 for a ticket. The Band Perry, Scotty McCreery and Taylor Swift — whose Feb. 4 concert included her first live performance of “Better Man,” the hit she wrote for Little Big Town — were also featured in well-publicized events on Feb. 4. And Kane Brown had brief face time in the Jan. 31 CBS special Super Bowl Greatest Commercials.

MOVERS AND SHAKERSThe Academy of Country Music recognized 11 broadcast outlets twice when it announced finalists for its annual Radio Awards on Feb. 1. Double nominees, represented in the radio station and on-air personality of the year categories, were major-market KMLE Phoenix and WKKT and WSOC Charlotte, N.C.; large-market WUBE Cincinnati, WSM-FM Nashville and WQDR Raleigh, N.C.; small-market WCOW Sparta, Wis., and KCLR Columbia, Mo.; and medium-market WIVK Knoxville, Tenn.; KUZZ Bakersfield, Calif.; and KXKT Omaha, Neb. Go here for the full broadcast nominations list … Entercom and CBS Radio announced a merger that gives Entercom 244 total stations nationwide, with Entercom president/CEO David J. Field overseeing the enterprise. The corporation has 20 country stations, including WUSN Chicago, KSON San Diego and KMPS and KKWF Seattle. Meanwhile, the chain has openings for an assistant PD-music director at several of its country stations. MUSIC NOTESWhen Keith Urban and Carrie Un-derwood’s names were repeatedly paired in promotion of the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards, it seemed likely that the two would use the platform for their duet “The Fighter.” Indeed, that song has now been officially con-firmed as one of the titles set for the CBS telecast, an ideal way to expose it following its Feb. 6 release to radio via PlayMPE. Urban used an Under-wood video to create a high-tech duet of the song during his tour, and they sang it live for the first time on Dec. 3 in New Zealand. It’s the fifth single from Riptide, a Grammy nominee for best country album.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Don Williams built his reputation on a smooth vocal presence and an uncanny ear for great songs. His musical understanding is at the heart of a forthcoming tribute album, Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams, due May 26 on Slate Creek. Expected highlights include Pistol Annies’ “Tulsa Time,” Chris and Morgane Stapleton’s “Amanda,” Keb’ Mo’s “Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good” and Garth Brooks’ “Good Ole Boys Like Me.” The project is produced by Garth Fundis (Keith Whitley, Trisha Yearwood), Williams’ longtime producer-engineer.

Did you miss Eric Church’s 2016 performance at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival? The show has been captured in the new virtual-reality for-mat by vantage.tv, a tech company that’s partnered with a number of live events. Shot with an eight-camera setup, Church’s Stagecoach concert can be relived in 180- and 360-degree views on several different platforms. It’s reportedly the first concert available on demand in the VR format.

The Grand Ole Opry broadcasts from the Country Radio Seminar for a fifth straight year when the WSM-AM Nashville radio show emanates from the Omni Nashville on Feb. 22. CRS registrants get in free for the performance, which will feature Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Trace Adkins, Crystal Gayle, LoCash, Cam, Michael Ray, Chris Lane, Carly Pearce and Dailey & Vincent.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 6, 2017 | PAGE 17 OF 23

It’s safe to say that few people have a first-concert experience like Florida Geor-gia Line’s Brian Kelley. For starters, that initial show as a fan — a Backstreet Boys homecoming concert at the House of Blues in Orlando, Fla., in February 1998 when Kelley was a sixth grader — was stylin’. His best friend’s parents had rented a limo for their daughter’s birthday, and Kelley was part of a group that might have arrived at the venue in better transportation than the headliners.

“It was nuts,” remembers Kelley of that show. “People were just screaming, hooting and hollering all around.”

Putting an unusual coda on that first concert, Kelley and his FGL partner, Tyler Hubbard, are now linked to Backstreet through “God, Your Mama, and Me,” a collaboration that meshes seven voices and also crosses genres and gen-erations. Just four weeks after BMLG released it to radio via PlayMPE on Jan. 9, it’s already at No. 40 on Hot Country Songs and No. 36 on Country Airplay, numbers that suggest it’s bound to become a hit.

“To have the Backstreet Boys featured on it was some-thing we kind of envisioned in the studio while recording it,” says Hubbard. “To have that come to fruition was amazing. It really, really took that song to the next level.”

It helps that BSB bought into the song right away.“I’m a father of two boys, so I like how the song could have

a double meaning,” says Backstreet’s Kevin Richardson. “You could be talking about your children, or your spouse, or your love interest. I think it’s poetic, and it’s got a great melody.”

Richardson’s interpretation is exactly what the songwrit-ers envisioned when they wrote it on Sept. 18, 2015, in the third-floor office of Josh Kear (“Drunk on a Plane,” “Neon Light”) at Yellow Dog Music in Nashville. Kear’s daughter had turned 6 just weeks before, and he had a father’s un-wavering love in mind when he conceived that phrase, “God, Your Mama, and Me.” Co-writers Gordie Sampson (“Storm Warning,” “Jesus, Take the Wheel”) and Hillary Lindsey (“Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “Dirty Laundry”) were both sold on his title, and they expanded the concept.

“It wasn’t until I tossed the title into the room with Gordie and Hillary and heard them talking about how appropriate that sentiment was for partners, friends, et cetera, that I realized that it was just a great thing to say about any-one you loved,” notes Kear. “Who doesn’t want to be loved unconditionally?”

“Unconditionally,” in fact, becomes as significant a word as the title. It’s functional, for starters, appearing frequently as a rhyming companion to “God, Your Mama, and Me.”

“It’s six syllables, so it just sat in the pocket,” assesses Sampson. “The rhythm of that word was important to the song.”

But it also offers an unspoken depth. It’s one thing to love someone with strings attached; it’s another to offer love without requiring anything in return. “That’s the heart of the message,” says Kelley.

Kear pulled up a programmed beat, while Sampson found some chords on electric guitar, setting the tone for the song’s easy-going, pop-flavored melody and pinging chorus. For contrast, they built in a brief, two-line bridge that un-derscores the singer’s commitment before the song returns to its affirmation: “No one’s gonna love you more than God, your mama and me.”

“In this day and age, a bridge has to be really, really short and not take your eye off the ball too much,” says Sampson.

Kear sounded like Keith Urban when he recorded a vocal over the beats that day. Lindsey added some harmonies, and Sampson worked on the demo for the next week. FGL producer Joey Moi (Chris Lane, Jake Owen) and manager Seth England put it on hold after one listen during a pitch session, then sent it to Hubbard and Tyler, who both found it perfect for their current mind-set. It’s not entirely coincidental that the first single from their album Dig Your Roots

was the similarly themed “H.O.L.Y.”“Love and spiritualism, they go hand in hand,” says Hubbard. “Those songs

don’t come around every day, and when they do, you have to take advantage of it.”Moi programmed a new drum beat and layered instruments on top of it one

by one, starting with Ilya Toshinsky, who added both acoustic guitar and a slinky-sounding electric. Keyboard player Dave Cohen, bassist Jimmie Lee Sloas and steel guitarist Russ Pahl filled out the arrangement, and FGL did several vocal sessions on “God, Your Mama, and Me.” Each time, they lived with the performance, then came back with a mind to beat the previous version. “It was right in Tyler’s wheelhouse,” recalls Moi.

By June 2016, the track was completed as an FGL-only cut and ready to be placed on the album Dig Your Roots, which would be released Aug. 26. “That song was completely done,” notes Moi. “Then the Backstreet Boys thing happened.”

BSB vocalist Nick Carter had become friends with FGL, and he attended its CMA Music Festival set at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on June 11. The duo played him some of its finished songs on the bus, and it was particularly interested in his reaction to “God, Your Mama, and Me.” Carter liked it, and FGL thought about asking him if Backstreet could sing on it. But the pair held back.

“I think we were kind of intimidated, like, ‘Should we just ask them to be on this song? Should we just shoot them an email?’ ” says Kelley. “You can’t be afraid to ever just ask, you know.”

England got in touch on their behalf within days, and after pulling together all five BSB members — Richardson, Carter and A.J. McLean from California; Howie Dorough from Florida; and Brian Littrell from Georgia — Moi pro-duced a vocal session at NightBird Recording Studios in

the Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood.“We each went in and took a stab at the second verse,” says Richardson, “and

we’re like, ‘Look, it’s your song. You pick whoever’s voice you think fits the emo-tional tone of the song and whoever delivers it the best.’ ”

Carter sings most of the second verse, McClain and Richardson handle the bridge, and all of them have ad-lib moments. They were, says Moi, mostly self-directed. “They don’t sound like the Backstreet Boys until they’re all singing, and then you’re like, ‘Holy crap, there it is.’ You don’t have to do anything. There it is.”

Several BSB members pushed photos from the studio out to social media during the June 27 session, and it was then that the songwriters had an idea what their creation might become. “When I started hearing from friends about the Backstreet Boys tweeting from the studio and sending me online Billboard coverage about the FGL/Backstreet Boys song, I knew we might have landed on something pretty special,” says Kear. “People seemed to be excited about the combo even before they heard the song.”

After the album’s release, “God” spent two quick weeks on Hot Country Songs, peaking at No. 28 in September, thanks to big digital sales and stream-ing activity. In the process, BSB became the second boy band to hit the coun-try chart by teaming with an established act on a song with “God” in the title. ’N Sync shared a top five single with Alabama for their joint 1999 version of “(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You.” “That was a smashola,” enthuses Kelley.

Backstreet Boys were a surprise guest during FGL’s Oct. 13 show in Nashville, where the two acts performed “God, Your Mama, and Me” live for the first time. And it likely won’t be the last. “We’re talking about doing some shows down the line this summer with FGL,” says Richardson.

Meanwhile, the recording is everything Florida Georgia Line hoped for.“It really does sound like how we envisioned,” says Hubbard. “It doesn’t al-

ways work out that way, so you really appreciate the times that it does.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 6, 2017 | PAGE 18 OF 23

While it’s generally the larger-market radio stations than generate media attention and win awards, small-market radio is still alive, well and serving communities across the country. Nowhere is this more evident than at independently owned WEIO in the West Tennessee farming community of Huntingdon.

The call letters bring to mind the children’s song “Old McDonald,” and that’s no accident. PD Kelly Green worked doggedly to convince station owner Jim Freeland of Freeland Broadcasting to take them on seven or eight years ago, matching up with the station’s slogan of “True Country 100.9 the Farm.” Station events like the Barn Bash and Farmerican Idol reinforce the agrarian branding in this dairy and cotton community.

Like many small-market stations, WEIO is sat-ellite-programmed most of the day, but its popular morning program, The Kelly & Ken Show, helmed by Green and Ken Folkes, draws in fans. “If you set the table in the morning, if you give them a reason to get up and listen to the show, a reason to tune in every day, and you can entertain them, you’ll keep them the rest of the day,” says Green. Between the station’s Storq automation system and programming from Westwood One, Green believes “it’s very easy to sound local” in other dayparts.

The 25,000-watt FM station covers about seven counties, according to Green. Folkes says, “We have a real tangible connection with our audience.” That’s likely because their morning show is every bit as entertaining as one that can be found in a major market.

Green and Folkes first began working together in 1993 at KAFX Lufkin, Texas. Green says, “It just clicked immediately. The chemistry happened al-most overnight.” They later moved together to WVSR Charleston, W. Va., and then parted to work in other markets for several years before reteaming at WEIO about four years ago.

Fun benchmark features on their show include a lot of music-based games, as well as Taste Test Tuesday, where they take turns bringing in strange and dis-gusting food items for their partner to try live on the air. An inward-facing GoPro camera that’s strapped to their heads to capture the reaction is just one of the many pieces of video the team captures and shares regularly on its social media channels. Green says Folkes is the team’s video expert.

“Ken’s videography skills are just out of this world with editing and cameras, and he even does a lot of drone work [at station events],” says Green. “That’s an added bonus that a lot of shows don’t really take advantage of. We throw a lot of videos up on YouTube that do very well. It’s one of those things in radio these days that you almost have to have to take that next step with the listener.”

Folkes says most of what they do on the air is “really just silly,” but it reso-nates with listeners eager to be entertained. Green says Folkes generates many of the ideas, including a recent contest called Does Amazon Sell It, in which

listeners had to identify which unusual items on a list can actually be found at the online retailer.

“Ken is the king of coming up with wacky con-tests,” says Green. “We call him the Merv Griffin of radio.” Quips Folkes in response, “I’m also the Merv Griffin of dated references.”

Folkes says some of their on-air banter springs from a tendency to “dig on each other’s failings. I made a contest for Kelly, who is a germaphobe, big time. So we play the germaphobe game where I come up with scenarios like expired milk, would he drink it, and the listener has to guess whether or not he would.”

“I feel like if we’re having fun, the listener is having fun,” says Green.

It’s not just listeners in Huntingdon that have taken notice. Green and Folkes just signed a deal with Music City-based Nashville Hot Country, which will syndicate The Kelly & Ken Show in other markets. That’s likely to give additional exposure to one more silent but important “cast member”: an overalls-clad porcelain doll called Creepy Baby that frequently appears in trade photos after coun-try artists visit the station.

Folkes explains that while he was moving his grandmother to an assisted-living facility a couple of years ago, he came across the doll in a chest of drawers he thought he had emptied while car-rying the chest out to a moving truck. “I opened a drawer, and suddenly there’s this creepy little doll face looking up at me with unblinking eyes,” he says, describing it as having “fierce eyes that look right through your soul.” “I let out a shriek that echoed down the road, so I thought I’d share the creepiness with Kelly. I brought her in [to the station], and she sat on the back of our couch for a long time.”

Eventually, Folkes began inviting visiting art-ists to pose with the doll. “It just became a thing,” he says. “It seemed like every time we let someone hold Creepy Baby in a photo, they ended up in the trades, so that became kind of a good luck charm.”

But not all singers are willing. “It’s funny how many artists are creeped out by it,” says Green. “Some won’t hold it. We almost have to force them.” He recalls with a laugh that the duo Terra Bella not only refused to touch the doll, but also “screeched” every time the morning team would bring it near them. Diamond Rio’s Dana Wil-liams had a different reaction: He couldn’t stop laughing at it.

Folkes is now considering trying to make Creepy Baby into an Internet star by bringing it along on his travels and photographing it Flat Stanley-style.

In the meantime, he’s keeping a close eye on the lifelike doll. “When we make videos in [the studio], in the corner of the screen I always look to see if the doll moves a hand or blinks or turns her head,” he says. “I’m just waiting for that to happen.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 151 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2017, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 106 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 6, 2017 | PAGE 23 OF 23

On Feb. 13, 1971, Lynn Anderson’s Rose Garden, produced by Glenn Sutton (her then-husband), lifted 2-1 on Billboard’s Top Countr y A lbums chart for its f irst of 14 weeks at No. 1. The reign stood as the longest for a female until Sha-nia Twain’s The Woman in Me (29 weeks, 1995-96).

Rose Garden’s Joe South-penned title track (the set’s only single) became Anderson’s first Hot Coun-try Songs leader on Dec. 26, 1970—ruling for five weeks—as well as her biggest crossover hit, climbing to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song also garnered Anderson her lone Grammy Award for best country female country vocal per-formance. (In 1989, dance-pop act Kon Kan’s “I Beg Your Pardon,” which samples “ Rose Garden,” hit No. 15 on the Hot 100.)

A nderson, who was bor n in Grand Forks, N.D., logged 58 Hot Country Songs appearances (1966-89), including five No. 1s, and three Top Countr y A lbums No. 1s. A month before she died from a heart attack on July 30, 2015, at age 67, Anderson released her final album, the faith-based Bridges. —JIM ASKER
