By Vicki WilsonI looked up “antique” in the dictionary.

Synonyms for this word include old, obso-lete, ancient and old-fashioned. To be a true antique, an object must be at least 100 years old.

I have friends that collect antiques–most-ly furniture, coins or jewelry. I have one friend that collects nothing but cameo brooches. Of course, I know many people collect objects that are not necessarily considered antiques. We all have our different interests. I think that perhaps collecting any object, antique or not, is fulfilling to us because of the memories those objects evoke.

Many of our earliest memories include the toys we played with as children. I’m sure many of you remember the same sort of toys that I do–Erector Sets, Lincoln Logs, Mr. Potato Head, Johnny West, Thumbelina, Chatty Cathy, etc. I guess most of these toys date to only about the middle of the twentieth century or so and certainly wouldn’t be considered an-tiques.

Some of these toys are still around today, albeit in different versions. GI Joe in the earlier years was a 12-inch WWII action figure. After about 1976, Hasbro scaled the doll up and down in size, and there are many versions and accessories to accompany the action figure. I

I loved my Thumbelina doll. And Giggles! Remember her? She made this hideous gig-gling sound when you pressed her hands to-gether and her head wobbled back and forth. Patty Playpal was almost as tall as I was. She had elastic around her shoes and I used to put them on top of my feet and dance with her.

Believe it or not, I still have Betsy Wetsy packed in a trunk. Her clothes are gone and her hair is matted. My daughter has always loved dolls, as well. She has many of the dolls I saved and passed on to her. Are they valuable? Good grief, no; certainly not in the well-played-with condition they are in.

I have a few “collections,” mostly things passed from my great-grandmothers, grand-mothers and Mom. Wooden spools, various dishes and platters (some of which prob-ably are over 100 years old), kitchen utensils with odd shapes, purposes and wooden or melamine handles.

Stamps have always interested me. One great-grandmother collected a few stamps during the early 1900s and they were passed down to me. Some of them are truly beautiful works of art.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t an Inverted Jenny in the lot! The Inverted Jenny is prob-

ably one the most famous errors ever made in the printing of stamps. That stamp was issued on May 10, 1918, and featured the Curtiss JN-4 airplane accidentally printed upside down. In 2005, a block of four Inverted Jennys sold at auction for 2.7 million dollars!

People collect all sorts of things. I have a friend that collects old bottle caps. Remember the ones lined with cork? I’ve heard of people that collect anything from coins, eight-track tapes, seed packets and medical antique in-struments to mustard and ketchup packets, tissue box covers and traffic cones!

I’ve kept quite a few books through the years. A beat-up copy of Penrod and Sam by Booth Tarkington is one of my most valued possessions.

Can you search your Grandma’s attic and find an article worth a fortune? One can only hope! I do know that, as the saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. You only have to watch the Antiques Roadshow on PBS to know that there are treasures to be found. That object that you’ve always despised sitting on your great aunt’s coffee table suddenly be-comes pretty fascinating when you find out it’s worth! And, the thrill is the hunt!

It has been said that the only problem with common sense is that it is so uncommon. Sadly, that is all too true of many of our elected o�cials. As citizens, we must recognize the need to elect candidates, including judges, who do not check their common sense at the door. Our nation was established on Constitutional principles that still o�er us the greatest hope for liberty and prosperity. Whether it be the Whitehouse or the Courthouse, voters must insist those principles be honored. As Judge of the Chardon Municipal Court, I pledge to be committed to the defense of your rights, our Constitution, and bring common sense to the Courtroom!

�e Judge of the Chardon Municipal Court is also the administrator of the Court and is responsible for the organization, budget, and management of 25 employees. I am the only candidate with administrative experience managing government budgets and sta�. As Bainbridge Township Trustee, I helped lead the Township to a 17% decrease in its General Fund expenses, thereby saving taxpayers money without reducing services.

�e Chardon Municipal Court stands as the �rst line of defense in our County against wrongdoers. Misdemeanors and tra�c violations, including drunk driving cases, are all handled by the Chardon Court for Geauga County. As an attorney for over 30 years and a resident of Geauga County for 21 years, Bainbridge Township is my home and my place of business. As a father of three daughters and grandfather of seven, all of whom live in Geauga County, I am committed to the welfare of this community. Judges take an oath to uphold the Constitution just as soldiers do in the military. It is the plain meaning and wisdom of the Constitution that will guide my reasoning as Judge of the Chardon Municipal Court.
