When WXTU Philadelphia PD Shelly Easton suggested during a Country Radio Seminar panel in February that Garth Brooks was the original bro-country act for the ’90s, the statement got a laugh from the audience.

The term “bro country” isn’t even 2 years old, and it was invented to describe a segment of the genre that uses a lot of pop/rock sounds — crunchy guitars, computerized sonics and, sometimes, rap — to cele-brate partying and hook-ing up. The bro-country movement is generally regarded as one of the attractions that spurred country’s recent peak in popularity.

But Easton’s observa-tion had a lot of merit. Brooks’ signature bal-lads, “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and “The Dance,” may not have a lot of bro commonalities, but other parts of his lexicon do. The wedding-crasher anthem “Friends in Low Places” is awash in alcohol, “That Summer” treats a country field as a sexual playground, and “Ain’t Going Down (Til the Sun Comes Up)” makes a passing George Strait reference while a little hookup action takes place in a pickup truck parked near the creek.

That sure sounds like bro country, and while Easton’s CRS panel, “State of the Music: When a Style Becomes a Movement,” didn’t reach any firm conclusions, it should serve as something

of a warning to the genre’s gatekeepers. Country’s ongoing at-tempts to lure younger listeners have often created phenomenal bell-curve growth. But the back end of that curve has invariably been a steep decline — thanks to oversaturation of a subgenre or an image — and led to lots of hand-wringing by broadcasters and Music Row executives alike.

The recent spike at country radio was fueled in great part by such bro-country acts as Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean , a nd none of them like the term. Country UPDATE

they spend with country, having been driven away from the format by repetition. That happened in the post-Brooks ’90s when Nashville labels — mesmer-

ized by his multiplatinum albums and Billy Ray Cyrus’ multiplatinum single “Achy Breaky Heart” — launched the hat-act era, with lots of young artists who dressed like Brooks and sang semi-novelties. The younger portion of the audience grew weary and moved on.

The same thing happened in the post-Urban Cowboy ’80s when the cross-over success of pop-tinged country by Johnny Lee, Ronnie Milsap and Mickey Gilley led to a passel of adult contemporary ballads that practically pushed the lower end of the 25-54 target demo away to other formats which, at the time, had greater variety.

Songs considered bro country are still among the best-selling tracks, so the artists that led the charge are likely to continue having careers. But since the younger piece of the listenership has already receded, the best way to avoid another cyclical implosion of the format is to re-establish variety as the format’s key facet.

Fortunately, there’s plenty to pick from. Following are a few of the stylis-tic areas that would help balance the format — or, in some cases, already are restoring variety:

• Disco/R&B: Love and Theft was probably a little ahead of its time with the danceable 2012 single “Runnin’ Out of Air.” Thomas Rhett’s “Make Me Wanna” and Gary Allan’s new “Hangover Tonight” occupy similar turf, and Sam Hunt’s “Take Your Time” (which follows the bro- countryish debut “Leave the Night On”) adds a little more of a slow-jam feel. The soulful element is a good addition to the genre’s mix.

• Ballads: There have been plenty of periods where country had too many slow songs, but at this point, the genre could use more. Employed prop-erly, they work the same way they do in concerts, allowing the audience to get a bit of a rest before the next onslaught begins. KRTY San Jose, Calif., GM Nate Deaton said during the “State of the Music” panel that current Jake Owen and Eric Paslay ballads stand out because the tempo is dif-ferent. Trisha Yearwood’s current “I Remember You,” Brandy Clark’s “Hold My Hand” and last year’s overlooked wedding song — Ben Rue’s “I Can’t Wait (Be My Wife)” — all have the same potential.

• Female voices: Multiple programmers have predicted that women will make a comeback in 2015. Plenty have legitimate cases to make, includ-ing Clark, Jana Kramer, Cam, Mickey Guyton, Kelsea Ballerini, Kacey Musgraves and Ashley Monroe, who — by virtue of her duet with Blake Shelton — now has some audience familiarity to go along with a unique voice.

• Classic pop/rock: Music that draws from Tom Petty or The Rolling Stones has done quite well in country’s recent past, and several newbies — includ-ing Chase Bryant, A Thousand Horses, Chris Stapleton and Parmalee — have tracks or entire albums that drink from the same well.

• Traditional country: A return to the genre’s basics usually follows an excess of pop influence. Solid trad singles by Josh Turner and Easton

Corbin are begging for a little more attention. Mo Pitney’s “Country” would certainly freshen up most playlists, as would Clark or a handful of album cuts by established youngsters, including the Strait-like Dustin Lynch track “She Wants a Cowboy.”

• Instrumental music: We’re not talking such vocal-less songs as Buck Owens’ “Buckaroo” or the Edgar Winter Band’s “Frankenstein.” But instrumental sections have been winnowed down so thoroughly that the bridge in Striking Matches’ “Hanging On a Lie” or the final guitar solo on Brothers Osborne’s “Stay a Little Longer” would sound inventive to a younger listener, providing immediate diversity.

• Texas artists: The Eli Young Band successfully broke out of Denton to become a national act, though it’s just the tip of a deep iceberg. Much of the red-dirt music wouldn’t work in a mainstream country context, though some of it would, including the occasional track by Aaron Wat-son, Cody Johnson or the Josh Abbott Band. It’s a big pool of talent with lots of ways to differentiate a station from a crosstown competitor.

SOUTH BY SONGWRITERS LAUNCHESOne of the music industry’s best-known conferences, South by Southwest, concluded in Austin this weekend, just in time for Nashville to kick into the 23rd annual Tin Pan South, a festival that brings composers out of the writing room to play shows at 10 venues during a five-day run March 24-28.

Tin Pan sprinkles about 95 shows with such known artists as Larry Gatlin, Vince Gill, Love and Theft, Jamie O’Neal and Josh Thompson, in addition to loading up on new and established songwriting talent. Among the current hit writers in the lineup are J.T. Harding (“Somewhere in My Car”), Ashley Gorley (“Just Gettin’ Started”), Sarah Buxton (“Sun Daze”) and Luke Laird (“Talladega”).

Tin Pan weekly passes are sold out, though tickets for individual shows can still be purchased at the door. The schedule is available here.

The songwriter barrage continues post-Tin Pan with at least two benefit concerts in April. A previously announced “First and the Worst” event, fea-turing material from the trash bin penned by major composers, added Rivers Rutherford (“Living in Fast Forward”) to the April 1 lineup at 3rd & Lindsley. Already aboard were Richard Leigh (“Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”), Liz Rose (“You Belong With Me”) and Wynn Varble (“Waitin’ On a Woman”).

“Hits From the Hall” also raises money for the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame on April 14 at City Winery. Mac Davis headlines the show, which also fea-tures “The House That Built Me” authors Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin.

MOVERS & SHAKERSTexas Music Chart publisher Ed Shane died March 21. He spent more than 30 years as Shane Media president. Survivors include Shane Media’s Pam Shane. A career-spanning tribute has been posted at the Shane Media website … Cumulus made four notable personnel moves last week. The company hired Tom Schurr as senior vp, operations, overseeing stations in Dallas and Houston, including KPLX and KSCS Dallas. Schurr will eventually add other markets. Maire Mason was promoted to WNSH New York vp/GM from general sales manager. And Mike Vincent was named WSJR Wilkes-Barre-Scranton, Pa., PD/afternoon host, effective April 1. Forced into retirement after a 2007 car accident damaged his vocal cords, he spent 35 years on-air in the market.

’ROUND THE ROWArtist manager Al Bunetta died March 22 in Nashville following a battle with cancer. A longtime manager, booking agent and producer for singer/songwriter John Prine, he co-founded Prine’s label, Oh Boy, which also represented late

singer/songwriter Steve Goodman (“City of New Or-leans,” “You Never Even Called Me by My Name”). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juri Bu-netta Friendship Foundation … GrassRoots Promotion hired Rick “RJ” Jordan as promotion manager, effec-tive March 23. a Bar”) to a publishing deal and inked singer/songwriter Sarah Emily Par-ish … Long Hollow, a duo that features drummer Tommy Harden (Reba McEntire, Lee Brice) and Lorrie Harden, signed Trisha Walker-Cunning-

Cole Swindell scores his second No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated April 4), as breakup anthem “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) jumps 3-1 in its 24th chart week (which also re-writes his fastest rise to the summit). The song adds Most Increased Audi-ence honors, gaining by 12 percent to 44 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music.

The Glennville, Ga.-born Swindell, 31, previously led with “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” which topped the Oct. 11, 2014 chart in its 30th week. His prior, and first, chart entry, “Chillin’ It,” reached No. 2 a year ago this month. All three songs are from his self-titled debut full-length, which has reached No. 2 in a 56-week run (so far) on Top Country Albums. The set has sold 337,000 copies in the United States to date.

When did Swindell first hear a song of his on country radio? “I was in Nashville at the parking lot of Sony/ATV, my publishing company,” Swindell told Billboard at Febru-ary’s Country Radio Seminar in Nashville. “I was in a buddy of mine’s truck and got to hear [“Chillin’ ”], which was great. That’s when it felt real to me. It still sometimes doesn’t feel real, but that was the first time I thought, ‘I’m really getting a shot.’ ”

Top local audience contributors for “Whiskey” in the tracking week end-ing March 22: KKGO Los Angeles (1.1 million impressions), WUBL Atlanta (895,000), WNSH New York (891,000), KSCS Dallas (883,000) and KKBQ Houston (875,000).

Trivial trivia: Perhaps surprisingly, given the subject’s traditional promi-nence in the genre, Swindell’s new leader is just the third Country Airplay No. 1 with the word “whiskey” in its title. The others to set the bar (pun in-

ham as its international manager … Shaun Silva’s TackleBox Films launched an HGTV series, Nashville Flipped, on March 19 … Songwriter Don Robertson died March 16. He wrote such hits as Hank Snow’s “I Don’t Hurt Anymore,” Eddy Arnold’s “I Really Don’t Want to Know” and Hank Locklin’s “Please Help Me, I’m Falling.” Through the latter song, Robertson was credited with develop-ing the slip-note style that pianist Floyd Cramer turned into a signature sound.

GOOD WORKSReba McEntire plays a key role in the Big Machine Label Group’s fourth annual Outnumber Hunger program, launched in conjunction with General Mills.

McEntire and other BMLG acts will be featured on boxes of General Mills products — including Cheerios, Yoplait, Nature Valley and Pillsbury — from April through Jan. 31, 2016, in a program that raises awareness of the 49 million Ameri-cans battling hunger. Since the Outnumber Hunger campaign’s start, some 35 million meals have been provided to people in need.

This year’s campaign includes a TV special, Reba and Friends Outnumber Hunger, airing April 17 on Gannett stations and April 18 on CMT. Guests on the special are Tim McGraw, Eli Young Band, Ras-cal Flatts, Florida Georgia Line and Maddie & Tae.

tended) so high: Frankie Ballard’s “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Nov. 29, 2014) and Toby Keith’s “Whiskey Girl” (July 10, 2004).

Meanwhile, Keith Urban’s Eric Church-assisted “Raise ’Em Up” (Hit Red/Capitol Nashville) reaches the Country Airplay top 10, lifting 11-10 in

its 10th week with a 9 percent gain to 27.7 million in audi-ence. Urban notches his 33rd top 10, and Church posts his 10th (and ties his fastest f light to the region).

Urban extends his lead as the artist with the most con-secutive top 10s on Country Airplay (counting only pro-moted, non-seasonal titles). He has earned all 33 top 10s in a row starting with “Your Everything,” which was his first top 10 on the Aug. 12, 2000 chart. Among active top 10 streaks, Carrie Underwood claims the second-longest (20 since 2006), followed by Blake Shelton (17 since 2008).

“Raise” is also the fifth Country Airplay top 10 from Ur-ban’s album Fuse, which debuted atop the Sept. 28, 2013 Top Country Albums chart and has sold 438,000. It follows

“Little Bit of Everything” (No. 1, two weeks), the Miranda Lambert duet “We Were Us” (No. 1, one week), “Cop Car” (No. 8) and “Somewhere in My Car”(No. 1, two weeks). Fuse

is Urban’s third studio album to yield five top 10s, following 2004’s Be Here and 2009’s Defying Gravity. (2002’s Golden Road generated four top 10s, while its track “You Look Good in My Shirt” was rerecorded and released as a single from 2007’s Greatest Hits; the song hit No. 1 on Country Airplay in September 2008.)

MUSIC NOTESEric Church tops the list of 2015 inductees in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame when this year’s ceremony takes place Oct. 15 in Kannapolis, N.C., according to The Greensboro News & Record. Among the other six new mem-bers are Allman Brothers Band guitarist War-ren Haynes, who co-wrote Garth Brooks’ “Two of a Kind, Workin’ On a Full House”; late piano player Jay Spell, who recorded with Ronnie Mil-sap, Randy Travis and Emmylou Harris; and R&B artist Chuck Jackson.

Barely two months after hosting the pre-telecast awards for the Recording Academy, Hunter Hayes takes another turn as MC for the organization dur-ing Grammys on the Hill on April 15 in Washington, D.C. Alicia Keys will receive the Recording Artists’ Coalition Award during the event, which comes a night before hundreds of artists and executives meet with politicians to lobby on behalf of creators. Grammys on the Hill will also honor two members of the House Judiciary Committee: chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.).

A year after a successful two-night stand at Boston’s Fenway Park, Zac Brown Band becomes the first act to play the Red Sox’ home field three straight eve-nings Aug. 7-9. A new album, Jekyll + Hyde, will be well-established by that time. The project is due April 28.

Based on the TV show’s plots, the cast of ABC’s Nashville might be expecting an upcoming tour to feature a song that was written within the previous 48 hours, a rival label owner plotting an artist’s demise in the wings while the actor is singing onstage or a backup vocalist standing in unexpectedly while one of the featured performers falls ill onstage with a pregnancy-related com-plication. It’s doubtful any of the concerts will be that dramatic, but the cast covers eight cities with a run that starts April 29 in New York and concludes May 10 in Phoenix. Clare Bowen, Chris Carmack, Charles Esten, Aubrey Peeples and Lennon & Maisy will play all of the dates. Sam Palladio will do two shows, and Jonathan Jackson will make one.

Country Indicator

CHART LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 146 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 102 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSlAwarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20

weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
