By S.D. ShapiroI have a groundhog
hole problem. I mean, Ihad a groundhog holeproblem. I still have a
groundhog hole problem.Let me explain. In be-
tween rainy days I gotout in the backyard andtried to cut the grass. As
I was pushing the oldYard Boy lawnmowerback and forth and backand forth I came to arather abrupt and un-graceful halt as the frontwheel of the lawnmowerdisappeared into a hole.Back on my feet andshort of breath withfresh grass stains on myknees, I surveyed thelawn. Groundhog holes.
Groundhog. Wood-chucks. Whatever youwant to call them. Therewere at least a dozengroundhog holes in theyard.
I hate groundhogs. I
had aa problem withthem a few years ago, with their incessant holedigging. Living in town, the local constabularyfrowns on residents likemyself using a rifle todispatch the wood-chucks.
At the time, I got an es-timate from an extermi-nator. It would cost$199 for them to comeout to use a Havaharttrap to remove thegroundhog. And, therewas no guarantee that itwouldn’t come back ormore likely, that it’s rela-tives and offspringwouldn’t continue to digholes in my yard.
Being parsimonious, a10-cent word for beingcheap, frugal actually, Iknew there was a betterway.
I adopted a dog. From the local animal
shelter, I adopted a smallbrown dog. The dog waslisted as part terrier, partbeagle, part coon hound, and part German shep-herd. This dog, Charlie, was an all-Americanmutt. He was housebroken and seemedsmart. After a shorttime, I had him welltrained and he took wellto chasing the ground-
hogs from the yard.They disappeared.
And all it cost me waskibble.
This arrangement hasworked for the past cou-ple years and my backlawn was looking great. The groundhogs weregone and Charlie wasgetting chubby on kib-ble.
Until now. Thegroundhogs were back.
I had a lengthy conver-sation with Charlie. Wediscussed his job de-scription and talkedabout his happinesswith his kibble andwhere he saw himself in5 years. His job per-formance had alwaysbeen top notch so I wasassured that he’d do bet-ter.
I run a tight ship. Tomake sure that Charliewas not overwhelmedwith work and that hehad good working condi-tions I took extra care towatch him as he pa-trolled the yard. Hewould zip off the backsteps and race into theyard, his nose to theground. Charlie wouldoccasionally stop andtake care of business, aperk of the job, and allseemed right in the
world.Maybe the groundhogs
had just become sneaki-er with their tunneling?Maybe they returned enmasse and there werejust too many for Charlieto handle? I wonderedwhat the answers wereas I watched him fromthe back door.
And then he stoppedand started digging.Like an excavator, hedug straight down. Dirt, sod, and mud shot be-tween his legs like a ma-chine expelling overbur-den.
I snapped out of mystupefaction and yelledat the mutt. He stoppeddigging long enough toproudly smile a sly dogsmile at me. Can dogssmile?
For what it’s worth,Charlie never caught agroundhog and if he everdid, I doubt he wouldknow what to do with itwhen he did. When itcomes down to holes, sometimes they’re morethan they appear. Stopand think, “What wouldmy mother say?” Shewould say, “Sometimesan old dog can teach younew tricks.”

What would yourmother say?!
Groundhog HolesIn the fast paced 21st century we’ve traded
common sense for the ability to quicklylook up information on the internet.
We’ve forgotten our manners and civility. How do we get back to our roots? Can we get back?
Food for thought...
by Pastor Dan WestHave you ever been scared to tell Jesus about
some secret sin, thinking He would not understandand would severely punish you? Hebrews 4:14, 15tells us that we have a great high priest (one whogoes to God for us), Jesus, the Son of God. He hasbeen touched with the feeling of our weaknesses;how? He lived 33 years on this earth with a humanbody, just like ours! He was tempted and tested justlike we are. He knows what it’s like. He’s been here.
So what does this mean to us? It means that whenwe come to Him, we can come boldly (verse 16)knowing we will receive His mercy and His gracewhen we need it.
Confess your sins to Him; trust Jesus to deletethem. Commit your life to Him; turn away from any-thing unapproved by Him, and He will never leaveyou nor forsake you. Turn your back on Him and youare already condemned (John 3:18).

Girard said he had agood experience at thehospital but realized hecould tell people theywere going to be fine butwouldn’t be able to tellpeople they weren’t goingto be fine.
His time at the Mo-hawk Valley Water Au-thority also clarified hisdesired career path, he
said. “It confirmed envi-ronmental engineeringwas what I want to do,”he said.
Central Valley Acade-my senior Abby Schultzdid the whole 24 weeksof her internship at Con-Med Corp., and it sup-ported her goal of be-coming a mechanical en-gineer.
“It was just a reallygreat experience becausethey do so many types ofengineering there,” shesaid.
Central Valley Acade-my senior Ryan Bulgerspent 12 weeks with theHerkimer County Sher-iff’s Department and 12with the Herkimer Coun-ty 911 Center.
Bulger knew he want-ed to go into the law en-forcement field, and see-ing the Herkimer Countyofficials always workingto help people furthermotivated him. His planis now to go into the U.S.Navy Reserve then go toUtica College to study
cybersecurity and even-tually work his way up tofederal law enforcement.
“It was practically a lit-tle of everything,” hesaid, of the internship.“It basically opened upmy eyes to what I wantto do and how I shouldget there.”

The most recent statis-tics documenting med-ication errors in theUnited Sates are alarm-ing. According to the In-stitute of Medicine Re-port, more than 770,000people are injured be-cause of medication er-rors every year. Medica-tion errors can happento anyone, but happenmore frequently in theelderly, as seniors acci-dently get “mixed up”with their medicationsbecause they tend totake more drug relatedproducts than anyoneelse.
Medication errors canbe prevented and here a
few tips on how to avoidmistakes:
• Talk to your doctorand ask, why do I takethis prescription andwhat medical conditionis it for? Is it for long orshort term use?
• Ask how often do Itake this medicine (withfood/without food, etc)? What are the side effectsand what should I do ifthey occur?
• Keep a good record ofall the medications youtake as this will reduceyour risk of harmfuldrug interactions. Up-date your medicationrecord when you start anew medication or no
longer take a medication.• Record the name of
the doctor who pre-scribed the medicationand be sure to recordany over-the counter(OTC) medication youtake such as pain reliev-ers, antacids, laxatives, herbal, vitamin or di-
etary supplements.• Ask how important is
the prescription givenyour finances and overallhealth.
• Keep medicines in acool dry place, and whentraveling keep your med-ications with you.
• Use a pill box or atimer to remind you totake your medications, if
needed.• Do not let others take
medications that areprescribed only for you, avoid alcohol, unless thedoctor says it is safe anddo not take medicationthat is expired.
Please talk to yourdoctor before discontinu-ing any medications.Your pharmacist is a
helpful resource whentrying to manage yourmedications.

Disaster Planning forthose with Special Needs
Disasters such asfloods and storms canhappen at any time andyou must be prepared.Individuals with specialneeds often require moredetailed planning in caseof an emergency. Hereare some things to con-sider:
• Have at least a 3-daysupply of all your med-ications. Store all med-ication in one locationand in their original con-tainers.
• Have a list of all yourmedications: name ofmedication, dose, fre-quency, and the name ofthe prescribing physi-cian.
• If there is a poweroutage, have a backuppower supply for essen-tial medical equipment.
• If you use oxygen, have an emergency sup-ply (enough for at leastthree days).
• If you use an electricwheelchair or scooter, keep a manual wheel-chair for backup.
• Teach those who mayneed to assist you how tooperate necessary equip-ment.
• Label and attachlaminated instructionsto your equipment.
• If you are vision im-paired, deaf, or hard ofhearing, and if you areunable to use the TV orradio, plan for someone
to convey emergency in-formation to you.
If you live in an apart-ment, ask managementto identify and mark ac-cessible exits and areasdesignated for emer-gency shelter or saferooms. Ask about plansfor alerting and evacuat-ing those with sensorydisabilities.

On Tuesday, May 9,fire ripped through 210North Main Street inHerkimer. 27 peoplewere displaced by thisfire. Also, displaced bythis fire were scores ofanimals; dogs, cats, andmore.
HCHS got a call fromMOVAC about an hourafter the fire was calledin. Joanne Johnson, shelter and office man-ager, and Melissa Ben-nett, assistant shelterand kennel manager, loaded up the sheltervan and went down tothe scene.
Johnson explainedthat the police depart-ment directed them tothe cats that had beenrescued. She said, “Thefire department andEMTs were phenome-
nal.” HCHS offered tohelp residents who wereon scene with their petsbut Johnson mentioned, that most of the resi-dents opted not to takeadvantage of their offer.
Johnson and Bennetttook 4 cats, 3 in de-cent shape and onemore critical, to theshelter. At the shel-ter, the cats werecleaned up, hydratedand given food andwater. The fourth catis doing great nowunder their care. Onedog was dropped offthe next day.
Johnson said, “Thefire is devastatinglysad. It’s bad enoughthat people lost theirthings but animalshave no way to getout. She elaborated,
people should have aplan for pets duringemergencies just likethey should have a planfor their families. “Havea plan in place,” shesaid.
Johnson suggested,
signs for windows thatalert emergency serviceswhat type of pets are inthe house. She also ad-vised to have carriers foryour pets in an emer-gency. In a pinch, pillowcases work great.
If you are trying to lo-cate missing cats or dogfrom the fire; call theshelter. For more infor-mation on how you can
help the Humane Socie-ty, go to: www.herkhu-mane.org. or follow themof Facebook: HerkimerCounty Humane Society.

WhatchamacallitsOur Whatchamacallit
for this week is a fi ne ex-ample of what is known as a convex refl ector dead fl ame lantern. It is made in the style of the Archer, Pancoast hand lantern — having a square font (res-ervoir) and beveled leaded glass. Inside is a Callender kerosene burner, which according to Lanterns That
Lit our World (by Anthony Hobson), was used as early as 1861. It is quite hand-some and beautiful at the same time. A dead fl ame lantern was not depen-
dent upon an airtight globe (chimney) for proper mixing of fuel and air. The only function of the globe was to keep the wind from blowing out the fl ame. Our example is not marked, so it’s hard to say who the manufacturer was, but the closest example of design I found
online was an Archer, Pancoast & Co. example. In 1868, Absalom G. Smith (formerly of Acher, Pancoast) joined Robert E. Dietz to form Dietz & Smith, a lantern manufacturer. The convex refl ector lanterns are
hinged at the font, so the globe tilts back to access the burner, which unscrews so the liquid fuel can be replenished. Baffl es at the bottom allow fresh air in and vents at the top expel the “used” air. There have been many manufacturers of lanterns over the last couple of centu-ries. But perhaps the most recognizable name in lanterns and lamps is Dietz (in one form or another).
