Country Bridge Solutions

The involvement of councils is critical to the solution

A fresh approach The NSW Government is developing an innovative and cost effective solution to enable regional councils to replace bridges on their roads:

Collaborative approach

Simple and easy to build

Use existing council resources

Provide manuals to assist with design, development and construction

Work Completed to Date: • Project framework and project plan established • Initial design completed for a prestressed concrete modular bridge system with an inverted double tee deck unit suitable for SM1600 loadings • Minister for Roads and Freight, Duncan Gay was briefed and subsequently announced the project including collection of timber bridge inventory and prioritisation by January 2015 • Value Engineering Workshops with councils and industry in August 2014

• Roads and Maritime provides regular updates to TfNSW on the CBS project.

Overview of the “givens” for the Country Bridge Solutions program: • The overall project involves three phases: 1. Concept Development, 2. Proof of Concept and 3. Construction, with a commitment only to complete phase one. Roads and Maritime Services is funding phase one. Phases two and three are dependent on available funding • Roads and Maritime will provide technical support and assist development of a framework for councils to deliver. Initially, the Country Bridge Solutions project will focus on the replacement of timber bridges in poor condition on regional and local roads • Success of the program will require a coordinated and collaborative approach from state and local government “The NSW Government and regional councils will jointly deliver the Country Bridge Solution to communities”.

Workshop Objectives: • Gain an understanding of the critical issues facing councils in

bridge replacement and maintenance on their networks

• Review the current Bridge Design Solution with a view to testing its appropriateness and highlight issues, concerns and potential improvements associated with various aspects of the project

• Identify a way forward to address the issues and concerns,

evaluate the improvements identified and ensure the design is robust as it moves forward in development

Initial Design Criteria • Straight bridge, constant grade, no skew • Low traffic volumes • Maintain current flood immunity • 100 year design life • Simplified construction • Maximise precast components and minimise in-situ concrete pours • Standardised foundation options and minimised geotechnical

investigation requirements • Low performance level barrier suitable for submergence • Precast components able to be transported on standard trucks with

fewer restrictions • Minimise whole of life costs

Roads and Maritime Concept – Superstructure Low performance level twin rail steel barrier

– New Roads and Maritime standard barrier designed

– Barrier transition to Thriebeam guardrail at abutments

– If the site conditions permit, Thriebeam can be continued

across the bridge

– Regular performance level barrier can also be accommodated if necessary

Roads and Maritime Concept – Bearings Laminated elastomeric rectangular bearings

– Similar to standard practice for spaced plank bridges

– Common problem with this type of structure is getting the

module to be supported evenly on all bearings under dead loads

– Proposed solution is temporary support on jacks under cross girder while bearing bottom attachment plates are adjusted then grouted

Roads and Maritime Concept – Substructure • Prestressing and reinforcement arrangements for 6m, 8m,

and 10m spans as well as current 12m, keeping same cross section dimensions

• There is the capacity in the section to extend to longer spans • Substructure solutions for ground conditions that do not

permit driven piles • Continuous improvement of a standard
