Gabon officially the Gabonese Republic (French: République Gabonaise), is a sovereign state on the west coast of Central Africa. Located on the equator, Gabon is bordered by Equatorial Guinea to the northwest, Cameroon to the north, the Republic of the Congo on the east and south, and the Gulf of Guinea to the west. It has an area of nearly 270,000 square kilometres (100,000 sq mi) and its population is estimated at 1.5 million people. Its capital and largest city is Libreville.Since its independence from France on August 17, 1960, Gabon has had three presidents. In the early 1990s, Gabon introduced a multi-party system and a new democratic constitution that allowed for a more transparent electoral process and reformed many governmental institutions. Gabon was also a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2010–2011 term.

Gabun (frz.: Le Gabon) ist ein Staat in Zentralafrika. Er grenzt an Kamerun, Äquatorialguinea und die Republik Kongo sowie an den Golf von Guinea. Durch das Land verläuft der Äquator. Gabun liegt an der westlichen Atlantikküste Zentralafrikas, von wo aus es sich in östliche Richtung bis kurz vor das Kongobecken erstreckt. Die Küstenlänge beträgt 885 km. Das westliche Küstentiefland steigt nach etwa 200 Kilometern stufenförmig bis zur Niederguineaschwelle im Osten an.Größter Fluss des Landes ist der Ogooué, der sich mit seinen zahlreichen Nebenflüssen tief in das Gelände des Hochlands eingeschnitten hat. Der höchste Berg Gabuns ist bisher nicht festgelegt. Es existieren verschiedene (fehlerhafte) Angaben, die bis zu 500 Höhenmeter voneinander abweichen. Die höchsten Erhebungen im Nordosten und Süden reichen bis knapp über 1.000 m ü.d.M.In Gabun wurde der erste bekannte natürliche Kernreaktor, der Naturreaktor Oklo entdeckt.

A natural nuclear fission reactor is a uranium deposit where self-sustaining nuclear chain reactions have occurred. This can be examined by analysis of isotope ratios. The existence of this phenomenon was discovered in 1972 at Oklo in Gabon, Africa, by French physicist Francis Perrin. The conditions under which a natural nuclear reactor could exist had been predicted in 1956 by Paul Kazuo Kuroda. The conditions found were very similar to what was predicted.Oklo is the only known location for this in the world and consists of 16 sites at which self-sustaining nuclear fission reactions took place approximately 1.7 billion years ago, and ran for a few hundred thousand years, averaging 100 kW of thermal power during that time.

Der Naturreaktor Oklo in Mounana, in der gabunischen Provinz Haut-Ogooué, ist eine Uranlagerstätte in der durch natürlich entstandene Urankonzentration eine nukleare Kettenreaktion einsetzte. Mittlerweile sind die Überreste von insgesamt 17 Naturreaktoren in Oklo und im 30 km entfernten Bangombé entdeckt worden.Die hohe Urankonzentration entstand vor ca. zwei Milliarden Jahren, also im Erdzeitalter des Proterozoikum. Der Kernreaktor war ca. 500.000 Jahre lang aktiv und setzte während dieses Zeitraums, bei einer thermischen Leistung von bis zu 100 kW, Energie im unteren dreistelligen Tera-Wattstunden-Bereich frei. Das entspricht in etwa der Energiemenge, die ein durchschnittliches Kernkraftwerk in einem Zeitraum von vier Jahren erzeugt. Im Zuge dessen wurden insgesamt etwa 10 Tonnen 235U nuklear gespalten und aus 238U etwa 4 Tonnen 239Pu erzeugt. Ihre Aktivitäten kamen vor mindestens ca. 1,5 Milliarden Jahren zum Erliegen, da sich der natürliche Isotopenanteil von 235U zu diesem Zeitpunkt so weit reduziert hatte, dass die Bedingungen für selbsterhaltende Spaltungsprozesse nicht mehr gegeben waren.
