Girolamo Savonarola: ● Was one of first reformers to try to change the church from within
● During the late 1400's, he preached fiery sermons against the abuses of the church
● He called the churches to melt down their gold and silver ornaments to buy bread for the hungry and poor members of the church
● Savonarola was eventually excommunicated for spreading ideas the Pope thought was dangerous
● Was executed in Florence (1498)
