The homebred son of Pioneerof the Nile has been unbeatable since running 5 th in his debut at Del Mar last August, rattling off eight consecutive wins that peaked with dominating scores in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. American Pharoah returned to the races in the William Hill Haskell Invitational (GI) August 2 at Monmouth Park and, if even possible, looked sharper than the horse who blitzed through the Triple Crown, winning by 2 ¼ lengths while being geared down late. Baffert and Zayat cautioned about an appearance in the Travers immediately following the Haskell, but American Pharoah’s energetic breezes in the coming weeks made the decision an easier one. After he worked seven furlongs in a sizzling 1:23.20 at Del Mar August 23, Baffert knew a date with Saratoga loomed.

Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah’s Presence in the Travers, Four Challenge Races, Anchor Star-Studded Saratoga Weekend

Only in Saratoga. As if Saturday’s four grade I Breeders’ Cup Challenge races weren’t enough, the decision by trainer Bob Baffert and owner Ahmad Zayat that Triple Crown winner AMERICAN PHAROAH will come for the Travers (G1) bolstered what was already shaping up as the summer’s most definitive racing day. The “Mid Summer Derby” will anchor a stakes card that will see the Sword Dancer (Longines Turf), Personal Ensign (Distaff), Forego (TwinSpires Sprint) and Ballerina (Filly & Mare Sprint) offer guaranteed starting spots in the Breeders’ Cup. The Sword Dancer and the Travers will be televised live on NBC as a part of the “Summer at Saratoga, Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series – Presented by Lane’s End Farm” from 4-6 p.m. ET. Run at 1 ¼ miles, the $1.6 million Travers has long been a summer stop for the most talented 3-year-olds in training, but the bar has obviously been set higher with the presence of American Pharoah, racing’s first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed turned the trick in 1978. The homebred son of Pioneerof the Nile has been unbeatable since running 5th in his debut at Del Mar last August, rattling off eight consecutive wins that peaked with dominating scores in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont.

Page 2: Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Newsletter · wins that peaked with dominating scores in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. American Pharoah returned

“He was more aggressive today. He didn’t work all that fast last week and he wanted to get into it today,” Baffert said. “I think the track seems to be a little bit faster. We wanted to see where he is; where his energy level is. To be sure he still has it. It’s incredible that he does after all this. But he does. Then again, he’s an incredible horse.” (Whirlaway, in 1941, is the only Triple Crown winner to win the Travers. Affirmed finished first in the 1978 Travers, but was disqualified for interference and placed second, and Alydar was declared the winner). While American Pharoah will rate as an imposing odds-on favorite, both on talent and the fact he has already handled several of the Travers runners with ease, he will be greeted by a dangerous new shooter in Erich Brehm’s TEXAS RED, who was late to the party as a 3-year-old but enters off a solid local win in the Jim Dandy (GII) August 1. Trained by Keith Desormeaux, the son of Afleet Alex won the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year at Santa Anita but was forced to miss the Triple Crown series with foot problems. Texas Red returned to run second in Belmont’s Dwyer (GIII) in July then broke through again in the Jim Dandy to improve his lifetime record to 3-for-8. Godolphin’s homebred FROSTED had the misfortune of chasing American Pharoah home in both the Derby, when fourth, and Belmont, when second, and will try again for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. The son of Tapit, who is 2-for-10 lifetime, won Aqueduct’s Wood Memorial (GI) in April and will use a second-place run in the Jim Dandy as his springboard to the Travers. Stretch running FRAMMENTO, fifth in the Belmont and fourth in the Jim Dandy for trainer Nick Zito; KEEN ICE, who improved substantially when second to American Pharoah in the Haskell and should like the 1 ¼ miles for trainer Dale Romans; recent Delaware Park maiden winner MID OCEAN for trainer George Weaver; SMART TRANSITION, who won the local Curlin July 31 for trainer John Shirreffs and TALE OF VERVE, a distant second in the Preakness but just seventh in the Belmont and sixth in the West Virginia Derby (GII) at Mountaineer Park August 1 for trainer Dallas Stewart, are also expected for the Travers. KING OF NEW YORK and UPSTART could also be entered. Challenge Races Brimming With Star Power Hardly to be overshadowed, Saratoga’s four Challenge races could stand alone as centerpieces to a Saturday card at the Spa and will showcase immense talent and depth in their respective divisions. The $1 million Sword Dancer, run at 1 ½ miles, was given a significant purse increase this year and that, coupled with an automatic berth into the Turf, has brought an international flair to Saratoga’s premier grass race and an automatic berth into the $3 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. Juddmonte Farm’s homebred FLINTSHIRE (GB), who was second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita for trainer Andre Fabre, will make a return trip to the states. The 5-year-old son of Dansili (GB) won the Hong Kong Vase (GI) at Sha Tin in December to close out his campaign but will look to annex his first win of the season after finishing in the money in all four starts, including a second to superstar mare Treve (FR) in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (GI) at Saint Cloud June 28. IMAGINING, second to champion Main Sequence in last year’s Sword Dancer for trainer Shug McGaughey; local allowance winner MESSI (GER) for trainer Graham Motion; TWILIGHT ECLIPSE, who won Belmont’s Man ‘O War (GI) in May for trainer Tom Albertrani; RED RIFLE, who impressed in winning the local Bowling Green (GII) August 1 for trainer Todd Pletcher and WAR DANCER, second in the Bowling Green for trainer Bill Mott, also warrant respect in the Sword Dancer. Longshots FIXADOR (BRZ) and GUARDINI (FR) are also expected to invade from Europe. The $750,000 Personal Ensign, run at 1 1/8 miles, will offer a rematch between Town and Country Farms’ STOPSHOPPINGMARIA and Ron Winchell’s homebred and defending Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner UNTAPABLE, the 1-2 finishers in the local prep, the Shuvee (GIII) August 3. The former, a 4-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat pulled away late to win by 1-length and has shown an affinity for Saratoga’s main track, as she’s 4-for-5 lifetime over it for Pletcher. Untapable, a 4-year-old daughter of

Tapit, has struggled to find her form this year, going 1-for-4 for trainer Steve Asmussen, with Oaklawn Park’s Apple Blossom (GI) in April as her lone score. Philip Steinberg’s GOT LUCKY, who has won a pair of Monmouth Park’s stakes in her last two for Pletcher; Harold Queen’s homebred SHEER DRAMA, who won the Delaware Park Handicap (GI) July 18 for trainer David Fawkes and Jim Tafel’s TIZ WINDY, 3RD IN THE Shuvee for trainer Carl Nafzger, are also expected for the Personal Ensign. The $500,000 Ballerina, run at seven furlongs for an automatic berth into the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, offers an enticing matchup between Bobby Flay’s DAME DOROTHY, who is 3-for-4 this year for Pletcher, including a win in Churchill Downs’ Humana Distaff (GI) in May and Lady Sheila Stable’s LA VERDAD, who has won four in a row for trainer Linda Rice, including the local prep, the Honorable Miss (GII), July 29. MERRY MEADOW, who won the Princess Rooney (GII) July 5 for trainer Mark Hennig; Monmouth stakes winner ROOM FOR ME for trainer David Jacobson; SARAH SIS, who won the Iowa Oaks (GIII) at Prairie Meadows for trainer Ingrid Mason, Churchill’s Winning Colors (GIII) winner STREET STORY, for Asmussen and UNBRIDLED FOREVER, who won her seasonal debut in the local Shine Again August 5 for trainer Dallas Stewart, are also slated to run in the Ballerina. The $700,000 Forego, run at seven furlongs, gets the winner a free berth in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The race features the return of Good Friends Stable’s divisional heavyweight PRIVATE ZONE, who is 2-for-4 this year for trainer Jorge Navarro, which includes a win in the Belmont Sprint Championship (GIII) July 4. The 6-year-old son of 2000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Macho Uno has shown a penchant for running big in New York, as he’s won Belmont’s Vosburgh (GI) twice and Aqueduct’s Cigar Mile (GI) as well. THE BIG BEAST, who won the King’s Bishop (GI) here last year and was second in the local Vanderbilt (GI) for trainer Tony Dutrow; RACE DAY, who won the Oaklawn Handicap (GII) in April for Pletcher and multiple graded stakes winner SALUTOS AMIGOS, a close 4th in the Vanderbilt for Jacobson are also likely Forego starters, as are BOURBON COURAGE, TAMARKUZ and WILDCAT RED.

News and Notes Shore Runner Eyes Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Brad Grady’s SHORE RUNNER, who has won three in a row and back-to-back stakes since being claimed by trainer Joe Sharp, has his sights set on the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The 5-year-old son of More Than Ready was claimed for $62,500 at Belmont Park in June and has taken his game to a new level for Sharp, winning Saratoga’ Lucky Coin in July and Troy August 22. Shore Runner is now 8-for-17 overall and has Sharp looking forward to a trip to Keeneland this fall. "We're still unsure what our next step will be,” Sharp said. “We're looking at a race next at Kentucky Downs as a possibility, but we'll see how he comes out of it. We might just freshen him until the Breeders' Cup (Turf Sprint)." “You never know how they'll come back off a long layoff,” Casse said. “We have one of the best turf fillies in North America in Tepin and we'd love to have a second one. She's come back and trained really well. She looks great and if she can get back into her form, that (Breeders' Cup) is our goal.” Lowther Runner-Up Could be Breeders’ Cup Springboard

Page 4: Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Newsletter · wins that peaked with dominating scores in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. American Pharoah returned

Godolphin’s homebred LUMIERE (GB), who was second in the Lowther (GII) at York August 20, could be in line for a trip to Keeneland and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf later this year. The 2-year-old daughter of Shamardal won her debut at Newmarket in July and impressed at York in her first start against winners for trainer Mark Johnston. Lumiere has shown a liking for firmer turf courses, which has Johnston keeping a trip to Lexington in mind this fall. “We’ll be looking at fast ground this season and (Godolphin’s) John (Ferguson) has just said we should keep one eye on the Breeders’ Cup as a possibility,” Johnston said. “If ground is a major factor, that’s one thing we could keep up our sleeve.” Another US Run for Euro Charline After Team Valor’s Euro Charline (GB) finished a disappointing fourth on the soft course as the defending champions in Arlington’s Beverly D., trainer Marco Botti, told Sporting Life this week that he wants another US shot for his 4-year-old filly, in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Before that, Botti said that Euro Charlene has options to run in the Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 12, which is a “Win and You’re In” for the Filly & Mare Turf. She could also be considered for the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. "Ideally, I would like her to take her chance in the Breeders' Cup. We will take it step by step and see how she goes."

MAJOR STAKES RECAP August 19-23 A review of the major global races in the corresponding Breeders’ Cup divisions from last week. Winning jockeys’ names are in parenthesis in each recap. The top Breeders’ Cup Points' leaders and Breeders’ Cup Challenge winners by division are listed at the end of each section. Breeders’ Cup Point earners are limited to horses who finish first, second or third in Graded Stakes races. Horses based outside of the U.S. or Canada who have not won a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, are selected into World Championships races by the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel at the Pre-Entry stage, Oct. 19. Juvenile standings will begin in September. A complete Breeders’ Cup Points list is available at: https://members.breederscup.com/championships/pointsleaderboard.aspx

Race: $1 million TVG Pacific Classic (GI), 3yos & up, 1 ¼ miles BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE

Track: Del Mar Finishing Order: 1 – BEHOLDER, 2 – CATCH A FLIGHT (ARG), 3 – RED VINE Margins: 8 ¼, 1, half Also ran: HOPPERTUNITY, IMPERATIVE, HARD ACES, CLASS LEADER,

BAILOUTBOBBY, BAYERN, MIDNIGHT STORM Winning Connections:

Owner: Spendthrift Farm; Trainer: Richard Mandella; Jockey: Gary Stevens.

Time: 1:59.77 (fast) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – In a performance for the ages, Spendthrift Farm’s BEHOLDER (Gary Stevens) became the first female to win Del Mar’s $1 million TVG Pacific Classic (GI) and earned an automatic starting berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the process with a jaw-dropping 8 ¼-length win over stablemate CATCH A FLIGHT (ARG). Richard Mandella trained the winner, a two-time champion and Breeders’ Cup winner who left her division for the first time and showed she’s a legitimate threat for the Classic at Keeneland, should her connections opt to run there. Beholder, a 5-year old daughter of Henny Hughes, won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita in 2012 and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff there in 2013 to cement divisional championships but added to a resume that will certainly land her in the Hall of Fame by winning the Pacific Classic. She’s now won 14-of-19, including eight grade I’s, and has left her connections with a heavy decision as summer turns to fall, as they will likely choose between running in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff or Classic at Keeneland. Beholder already won an automatic berth in the Distaff win a 7-length win in Del Mar’s Clement Hirsch (GI) in July. Regardless of which Breeders’ Cup race Beholder points to, she’ll likely prep in Santa Anita’s Zenyatta (GI), a “Win and You’re In” race for the Distaff that she won in 2013 and 2014. Mandella was non-committal the morning after the race but admitted the Classic is on the radar. “We’ll take it one step at a time,” Mandella said. “But there are a lot more windows open here today.” Catch a Flight confirmed his quality when second after a trio of graded stakes wins this year, including the local San Diego (GII) July

25 and could run next in another “Win and You’re In” for the Classic, the Awesome Again (GI) at Santa Anita September 26. Defending Breeders’ Cup Classic winner BAYERN was used on the pace and tired badly, finishing ninth for trainer Bob Baffert, in another disappointing effort that reiterates he’s not the same horse who won a quartet of graded stakes last year. Owner: Alex & JoAnn Lieblong; Trainer: Tony Dutrow; Jockey: Javier Castellano.

Time: 2:01.97 (fast) Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Alex and JoAnn Lieblong’s EMBELLISH THE LACE (Javier Castellano) hit the front soon after the start and never looked back, winning Saratoga’s $600,000 Alabama (GI) by 1 ¼ lengths over I’M A CHATTERBOX. The 3-year-old daughter of Super Saver made amends for trainer Tony Dutrow after a dismal ninth-place finish in her last start, Belmont Park’s Mother Goose (GI) June 27. Embellish the Lace improved to 3-for-5 lifetime and remained undefeated in three starts going two turns. She could run next in Parx Racing’s Cotillion (GI) September 19. Divisional leaders I’m a Chatterbox and CURALINA, who were second and first, respectively, in the local prep, the Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) July 26, ran on valiantly late but could not catch the loose winner. They could get a rematch in the Cotillion. Video: The Alabama Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff- Breeders’ Cup Challenge (BCC) Winners and Points Leaders

Time: 1:35.22 (firm) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Mile – Donato Lanni and John Youngbloods’s AVANZARE (Gary Stevens) stormed home to win the $200,000 Del Mar Mile (GII) by a half-length over TALCO (FR). Tom Proctor trained the winner, a 5-year-old son of Grand Reward who returned for the first time since winning the Arcadia (GII) at Santa Anita January 31. Avanzare, who is now 7-for-13 lifetime and has stamped himself as the pro-tem leader of the West Coast turf milers, could make his next start in Santa Anita’s City of Hope (GII) September 27. Talco, who secured a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile with his win in Santa Anita’s “Win and You’re In” Shoemaker Mile (GI) in his last start June 13, lost little in defeat and looms a major player in the turf mile division as well. Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Mile – Copper Water Thoroughbred Company’s REPORTING STAR (Luis Contreras) picked the right time to win his first race of the year, when he nailed TOWER OF TEXAS on the line by a nose in Woodbine’s $163,187 Play the King (GII). The 5-year-old son of Circular Quay was second as the favorite in the Sunshine Millions Turf at Gulfstream Park in January and entered off a head loss when third in a local optional claimer on the Polytrack July 12. Reporting Star is now 5-for-21 lifetime and could run next in Woodbine’s September 13 Northern Dancer (GI) or Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI), a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred and defending Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner BOBBY’S KITTEN was a major disappointment for trainer Chad Brown, running seventh in his first start since his win at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old daughter of Dubawi (IRE), trained by David Elsworth, was nothing more than an afterthought while trading

at odds of 50-1, even after Coolmore’s top 3-year-old Gleneagles (IRE) was scratched due to the soggy turf by trainer Aidan O’Brien, but she proved tenacious in the stretch while turning away the previously undefeated Golden Horn. Arabian Queen entered with nothing more than a win in the Duchess of Cambridge (GII) at Newmarket in 2014 and Princess Elizabeth (GIII) at Epsom in June as resume highlights but reached new heights in the International, while improving her career mark to 5-for-12. Elsworth indicated that Arabian Queen will be pointed to the British Champions Filly & Mare Stakes (GI) at Ascot October 17, though she’s an outside candidate to run in Longchamp’s historic Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (GI) October 4. Anthony Oppenheimer’s Golden Horn, a 3-year-old son of Cape Cross (IRE), entered undefeated in five starts for trainer John Gosden and was an odds-on choice off sharp group I wins in the Epsom Derby in June and Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown over older horses in his last start. He struggled with the footing at York, but seemed to right matters when he took a late lead, only to relinquish that advantage nearing the line. Gosden indicated he’ll look likely prep Golden Horn once before he takes aim at the Arc. Video: Juddmonte International

Jim Bolger bred and trained the winner, a 3-year-old daughter of Teofilo (IRE) who won the Irish 1,000 Guineas (GI) at The Curragh in May and made amends for a 5th-place run in the Pretty Polly (GI) in her last start June 28. Pleascach has now won half of her eight lifetime starts and Bolger mentioned another Filly & Mare Turf “Win and You’re In,” Longines Prix de l’Opera (GI) October 4, as a possible next start. Fomo Syndicate’s Covert Love had lost just once from five starts for trainer Hugo Palmer and the 3-year-old daughter of Azamour (IRE) entered off a win in the Darley Irish Oaks (GI) at The Curragh July 18. Palmer indicated that Covert Love could run once more this year, in Ascot’s British Champion Filly & Mare Stakes (GI) October 17, though he said she could also be given the rest of the year off and point to a 2016 campaign.

Appealing Tale was second to divisional leader Masochistic in Santa Anita’s Triple Bend (GI) in June then showed his versatility when second, beaten just a head, in Del Mar’s two-turn San Diego Handicap (GII) in his last start July 25, an effort that has Miller looking forward to the fall. We’re pointing for the (Breeders’ Cup) Dirt Mile,” Miller said. “He’s such a game horse and he can go anywhere from seven-eighths to a mile and a sixteenth, so the mile is right in his wheelhouse.” Video: Pat O'Brien Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile – Breeders’ Cup Challenge (BCC) Winners and Points Leaders Points Horse Trainer Owner(s) BCC Winner Appealing Tale Peter Miller Gary & Cecil Barber
