Both the Cotillion and the Pennsylvania Derby will be televised live on NBC at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday as a part of the “Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In – Presented by America’s Best Racing.” The Cotillion, run at 1 1/16 miles, is shaping up as one of the best races in the 3-year-old filly ranks this year, with Three Chimneys Farm’s homebred GUARANA putting her undefeated record on the line for trainer Chad Brown. The daughter of 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper has been a dynamo in her three starts, winning her debut at Keeneland in April by 14 ¾ lengths, Belmont Park’s Acorn (G1) in June by 6 lengths, and then passing the two-turn test when she wired Saratoga’s Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) July 19. A Cotillion win would give Guarana a clear divisional lead over stablemate Dunbar Road, who won Saratoga’s Alabama (G1) Aug. 17. Competition runs deep, however, with Joel Politi’s SERENGETI EMPRESS taking another shot at Guarana after she set a torrid pace and was a clear second in the Acorn. The daughter of Alteration won the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs in May for trainer Tom Amoss and has been as impressive in defeat as she has in victory, as she was also a super second in Saratoga’s Test (G1) Aug. 3. Serengeti Empress is 5-for-10 lifetime, including a win in Fair Grounds’ Rachel Alexandra (G2) in February, and a win could start a late-season push for a divisional championship. Kaleem Shah’s BELLAFINA, who won the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) in April for trainer Simon Callaghan but was just fifth in the Kentucky Oaks and a distant third in the Test, brings some star power, as does DJ Stable’s JAYWALK, who won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita for trainer John Servis but is just 1-for-5 since. AFLEET DESTINY, COLLEGEVILLE GIRL, HOROLOGIST, JELTRIN, SHE MAKES ME SMILE, STREET BAND, and SWEET SAMI D are all entered for the “Win and You’re In” Cotillion.

Parx’s Cotillion to Offer Distaff Bid, Pa. Derby to Reunite War of Will, Improbable

A slight lull in what will become a furious pair of Challenge weekends ahead is filled by Parx Racing Saturday in Bensalem, Pa., where the “Win and You’re In” Cotillion (G1), an automatic qualifier for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, will serve as a co-feature on a card that is highlighted by the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), which, with the late scratch of Maximum Security, sees Triple Crown rivals WAR OF WILL and IMPROBABLE as the pair to beat. War of Will, Improbable Meet Again in Derby The Tuesday morning scratch of Gary and Mary West’s homebred, divisional leader, and 9-5 morning line favorite Maximum Security, due to a colon issue, has strengthened the winning chances of War of Will and Improbable, who met in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, in what is now a six-horse field for the Pennsylvania Derby. Gary Barber’s War of Will was a troubled and well-publicized eighth in the Derby (moved up to seventh) then returned to win the Preakness for trainer Mark Casse, and has long been pointed to Parx. The son of War Front, who is 4-for-12 lifetime, also won the LeComte (G3) and Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds this winter but has disappointed in his last two, running ninth in the Belmont in June and fifth in Saratoga’s Jim Dandy (G2) July 27. Maximum Security’s absence, coupled with a win from War of Will, could start a late-season push that could potentially wrestle the championship away, with the Breeders’ Cup Classic still looming. WinStar Farm, China Horse Club International, and Starlight Racing’s IMPROBABLE was one of the winter book favorites for the Derby and was favored in the race after running second in Oaklawn Park’s Rebel (G2) and Arkansas Derby (G1) this winter but was a trouble-free fifth for trainer Bob Baffert. The son of City Zip then followed that up with a flat sixth as the favorite in the Preakness before bypassing the Belmont and aiming for a late-summer and fall campaign. Improbable returned to win the Del Mar’s Shared Belief Aug. 25, his first win on the year, and is 4-for-8 lifetime. Allied Racing Stable’s MR. MONEY will step up off a quartet of lopsided grade 3 victories for trainer Bret Calhoun, most recently by six lengths in the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer park Aug.3, and the son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents clearly rates as the now horse, as he’s won

Page 3: Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships …...limited to horses who finish first, second or third in Graded Stakes races. Horses based outside of the U.S., who have not

those four starts by a combined 20 ¼ lengths, while Robert Donaldson’s SPUN TO RUN won the local prep, the Sept, 2 Smarty Jones (G3) for trainer Juan Carlos Guerrero. MATH WIZARD, sixth most recently to Mr. Money in the West Virginia Derby, and SHANGHAI SUPERFLY, a maiden, are also entered for the Pennsylvania Derby.

News and Notes Mogul Earns Juvenile Turf Bid at Leopardstown The Coolmore conglomerate of Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith’s MOGUL earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf when he won Saturday’s $172,973 “Win and You’re In” KPMG Champions Juvenile (G2) by 1 ¼ lengths over SINAWANN (IRE) at Leopardstown. The 2-year-old son of Galileo (IRE) entered off a maiden win at The Curragh Aug. 30 for trainer Aidan O’Brien and has long been held in high regard, as he was a $4.655 million yearling purchase at the Tattersalls sale last year and is a full-brother to Coolmore and O’Brien’s JAPAN (IRE), who earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic when he won York’s “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (G1) Aug. 21. Mogul is now 2-for-3 lifetime, though a trip to Santa Anita for the Juvenile Turf may not be in the cards, as O’Brien indicated he may back off on his potential star, with eyes on next year’s European classics. Code of Honor Readies for Gold Cup, Classic Still Possible Will Farish’s homebred CODE OF HONOR, who won Saratoga’s Travers (G1) Aug. 24, is finishing up preparations for Belmont Park’s Sept. 28 “Win and You’re In” Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), an automatic qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and remains possible for a trip to Santa Anita. The son of Noble Mission (GB) has been one of the more consistent 3-year-olds this year for trainer Shug McGaughey, as he won Gulfstream Park’s Fountain of Youth (G2) in Mar., was third (moved to second) in the Kentucky Derby, and won Belmont’s Dwyer (G3) in July. Code of Honor, who is 4-for-8 lifetime, worked four furlongs in 50.55 Sept. 15 at Belmont and could parlay a big Gold Cup run into a trip to Santa Anita. "The Breeders' Cup is still in consideration,” McGaughey said. “We just have to get through this one and we'll see where we go from there." Old Chestnut Has Casse Thinking ‘Cup Off Woodbine Win Live Oak Plantation’s homebred OLD CHESTNUT wired Sunday’s $100,000 Ontario Racing Sunday at Woodbine and the 1 ¾-length win has set the wheels in motion to a potential trip to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint later this fall. The 2-year-old son of 2004 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Speightstown made it 2-for-2 on the turf for trainer Mark Casse and improved off his maiden win over the local course Aug. 9. Old Chestnut was fifth on debut at Woodbine over the Tapeta in July but has found a new home on the grass and will be pointed to Keeneland’s Oct. 6 Indian Summer, which is a “Win and You’re In” for the Juvenile Turf Sprint. “I thought about it for a little bit, and then thought maybe go here and then go to Keeneland (for the Indian Summer),” Casse said. “We won it last year with Strike Silver. That’s what kind of swayed my decision to come here. We’d go here, and then hopefully with a good performance there, he’d go to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Time: 2:06.49 (good) Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf – The Coolmore conglomerate of Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith’s MAGICAL (IRE) (Ryan Moore) earned an automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf when she beat stablemate MAGIC WAND by 2 ¼ lengths in Leopardstown’s $1.44 million “Win and You’re In” QIPCO Irish Champion (G1). The 4-year-old daughter of Galileo (IRE) needed only to get out of the immortal shadow cast by Enable (GB) to have her day, as she was second to the superstar mare in Sandown’s Coral-Eclipse (G1) in July and York’s Aug. 22 “Win and You’re In” Darley Yorkshire Oaks (G1), an automatic qualifier for the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Magical, who was also second to Enable in last year’s Turf at Churchill Downs, has now won 8-of-19 starts in a distinguished career and will give her arch rival another go in Longchamp’s Oct. 6 “Win and You’re In” Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1), another automatic Turf qualifier, before potentially ending her career in the Turf at Santa Anita. Magic Wand, another 4-year-old daughter of Galileo owned by Coolmore, was fourth in the Filly & Mare Turf last year at Churchill and could be in line for another shot this year at Santa Anita, while third-place finisher ANTHONY VAN DYCK (IRE), who completed a clean sweep for Coolmore and O’Brien, backed up the form that saw him win the Epsom Derby (G1) in June and makes the 3-year-old son of Galileo a legitimate Turf contender, though he too could go in the Arc first. John Gosden trained the winner, a 3-year-old son of Frankel (GB) who has come a long way since winning on debut at Newbury in May. Logician entered off a win in York’s Aug. 21 Great Voltigeur (G2) and looks poised to be one of Europe’s top horses next year, as Gosden indicated he’ll be given the remainder of the year off and point to the top 1 ½-mile races in 2020, which could conceivably mean the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland would be a long-range goal. The daughter of Galileo (IRE) was the lone 3-year-in the field and improved to 3-for-5 lifetime for trainer Dermot Weld, while winning her first group race in what looks to be a very promising career. Search for a Song, who was fourth in the Irish Oaks (G1) at The Curragh in July, entered off a win in the listed Sir Henry Cecil Galtres at York Aug. 22 and will likely be given the remainder of the year off and resurface for a 4-year-old campaign. PIER, MADE YOU LOOK, SILENT POET, AWESOME TANK (GB), AMERICAN GURU

Winning Connections:

Owner: Sam-Son Farm; Trainer: Gail Cox; Jockey: Eurico Rosa Da Silva

Time: 1:32.60 (good) Countdown to the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile – Sam-Son Farm’s homebred EL TORMENTA (Eurico Rosa Da Silva) pulled off a 44-1 shocker by a half-length over heavily favored GOT STORMY in the $846,703 “Win and You’re In” Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) and earned an automatic starting berth into the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile as a result. The 4-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic won the Connaught Cup (G2) in June over the local course for trainer Gail Cox but clearly achieved a lifetime best in winning his first career grade 1. El Tormenta entered off a troubled fourth-place finish in the local prep, the Aug. 24 Play the King (G2) and moved to 4-for-13 lifetime, with all of his wins coming over the Woodbine course, though he could look to conquer new territory at Santa Anita later this fall. “We’ll get him back to the barn, and see how he is, and everybody will talk about it (the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile),” Cox said. Gary Barber and Southern Equine Stable’s Got Stormy lost nothing in defeat after looking a certain winner off the far turn, and backed up the form that saw her beat males in Saratoga’s Fourstardave (G1) Aug. 10. The 4-year-old daughter of Get Stormy has hit a new gear this summer, and trainer Mark Casse is eagerly looking to win another TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile with a filly, having done so with Tepin at Keeneland in 2015. “I was proud of our filly,” Casse said. “I’ve lost no respect for her and I feel extremely confident that we’ll be right there in the Breeders’ Cup.” Video: Ricoh Woodbine Mile

Time: 2:27.63 (good) Countdown to the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf – Anthony Oppenheimer’s homebred STAR CATCHER (GB) (Frankie Dettori) led every step of the way for a three-quarters of a length win over her John Gosden-trained stablemate MUSIC AMICA (IRE) in Longchamp’s $691,892 Prix Vermeille (G1). The 3-year-old daughter of Sea The Stars (IRE) doubled up on her win in the Irish Oaks (G1) at The Curragh July 20 and is now 4-for-6 lifetime. Star Catcher will likely pass on a tilt with Enable in the local Oct. 6 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1), a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but could have her sights set on a trip to Santa Anita against males later this fall, according to Gosden. “She’s not in the Arc and has two possible options in the (Oct. 19 G1 QIPCO British Champions) Fillies & Mares Turf or the (Longines) Breeders’ Cup Turf.” Video: Prix Vermeille

Time: 1:38.81 (good) Countdown to the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf – Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez’s IRIDESSA (IRE) earned an automatic starting berth into the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with a three quarters of a length win over dual-Guineas winner HERMOSA (IRE) in Leopardstown’s $403,604 “Win and You’re In” Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron (G1). Joseph O’Brien trained the winner, a 3-year-old daughter of Ruler of the World (IRE) who won her third career group 1, to go with scores in the Fillies’ Mile last October at Newmarket and the local Pretty Polly in June. Iridessa is now 4-for-10 lifetime and could run next in Longchamp’s Oct. 6 Prix de l’Opera (G1), which is a “Win and You’re In” for the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The 6-year-old daughter of Indy Wind moved to 5-for-12 over the local lawn for trainer Kevin Attard, though she ended a three-race losing streak at Woodbine, dating back to last year’s Canadian. Starship Jubilee is now 13-for-30 lifetime and figures to return in Woodbine’s Oct. 12 E.P. Taylor (G1), a race she was a close fourth in last year. Time: 1:43.58 (fast) Countdown to the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – Albaugh Family Stable’s DENNIS’ MOMENT (Irad Ortiz) stamped himself an early favorite for next year’s Kentucky Derby and earned an automatic starting berth into the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a geared down 1 ¾-length win over SCABBARD in Churchill Downs’ $200,000 “Win and You’re In” Iroquois (G3). The 2-year-old son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow wowed the racing world with a 19 ¼-length maiden win at Ellis Park July 27 for trainer Dale Romans but needed to pass the class test at Churchill, and did so with aplomb, as he was eased up at the end after opening up a commanding lead in midstretch. Dennis’ Moment was a $400,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale but made an inauspicious debut at Churchill in June, as he clipped heels and threw his jockey at the start, but has been all business in winning both races since. Romans indicated Dennis’ Moment would run next in the Juvenile, a race owner and namesake Dennis Albaugh is looking forward to as well. “Right here in my hand is the invitation to the Breeders’ Cup,” Albaugh said. “They officially delivered it, so that’s exciting.” Video: Iroquois Stakes TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – Breeders’ Cup Challenge (BCC) Winners and Points Leaders

Legends of War entered off a win in an optional-claimer sprinting at Del Mar Aug. 2 and has been much better running at one-turn, which means he could be a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, especially since his Del Mar win came at the Sprint’s five-furlong distance. Fairyland ended her 2-year-old season with a win in the Cheveley Park (G1) at Newmarket but struggled this year while facing many of Europe’s best, including a sixth in Haydock’s Sprint Cup (G1) just eight days ago. Time: 1:21.82 (good) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf – Godolphin’s homebred PINATUBO (IRE) (William Buick) cemented a likely 2-year-old championship with a scintillating 9-length win over ARMORY (IRE) in The Curragh’s $403,604 Vincent O’Brien National (G1). The 2-year-old son of Shamardal made it 5-for-5 this year for trainer Charlie Appleby while taking on all comers this year, as he’s won at Epsom, Royal Ascot, and Glorious Goodwood, in addition to breaking his maiden at Wolverhampton in May. Pinatubo won the listed Chesham at Royal Ascot in June and entered off a win in the Vintage (G2) at Glorious Goodwood July 30, but clearly reached a new level in toying with his overmatched rivals in the O’Brien. Appleby indicated Pinatubo could run once more at Newmarket in the Oct. 12 Dewhurst (G1) before being put away for the year and preparing for next year’s European classics. “Win and You’re In” Moyglare Stud (G1). The 2-year-old daughter of Galileo (IRE) has had a busy first campaign for trainer Aidan O’Brien, as she won for the third time in six starts and made amends for a disappointing fifth in the local prep, the Debutante (G2) Aug. 23. Love, who also won the Silver Flash (G3) at Leopardstown in July, is likely for Newmarket’s Fillies’ Mile (G1) Oct. 11, before potentially running in Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. The race may have also picked up a starter in Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s Daahyeh, who was a strong second, which backed up her win in June’s Albany (G3) at Royal Ascot for trainer Roger Varian. The daughter of Bated Breath (GB) is 2-for-4 lifetime and entered off a second in Newmarket’s Duchess of Cambridge (G2) July 12 and has her trainer eagerly looking forward to some added ground later this fall. “I think on that performance it looks like a mile is within reach and she looks a good strong filly who can have another run or two this year,” Varian said. “The race that probably excites me most is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, as she’s very well-balanced, handles fast ground and it looks like she will get an easy mile at Santa Anita.” Varian mentioned Daahyeh could also run in the Fillies’ Mile before the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Eddie Kenneally trained the winner, a 2-year-old daughter of 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame who stretched out off a second-place finish sprinting in Saratoga’s Bolton Landing Aug. 14. Abscond, who was a $90,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland 2018 September Sale, won on debut at Ellis Park in July and is now 2-for-3 lifetime, and figures to make her next start in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
