50-strong: Youth Team Scotland head for Isle of Man

In August, against the imposing backdrop of the Wallace Monument in Stirling, Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) announced the 50 athletes selected to represent Youth Team Scotland at the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man 7-12 September 2011.

Members of the team with CGS Chairman Michael Cavanagh

and Louise Martin, Chair of sportscotland

Congratulating the team, Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of CGS said: “l am confident that we have selected an outstanding team to compete in the Isle of Man, and competition for the limited number of places has been fierce. “Whilst winning medals is important, the major benefit of the Commonwealth Youth Games is the opportunity it gives to expose young athletes to this level of international competition in a multi-sport environment. Becoming part of our teamThere was considerable excitement when all the athletes gathered at the University of Stirling for the team announcement, followed by the Youth Team Scotland team camp. With their places now confirmed, it was time for athletes to focus on final preparations for their biggest sporting competition to date.

The two-day team camp gave them the chance to mix with competitors from the seven different sports and get a feel for what it means to be part of a multi-sport team. There were full briefing sessions on what to expect at the Games, as well as workshops on medical and anti-doping education and use of social media, as well as fun team building activities. The highlight for many was collecting their Youth Team Scotland kit, a tangible symbol of the first time they will represent Team Scotland in a multi-sport Games and hopefully a taste of things to come.

Amongst the team members keen to collect their kit were gymnast Shannon Archer who at just 13 years of age is the youngest team member; badminton player Kirsty Gilmour who is the only athlete who has

already attended

a Commonwealth Games in Delhi 2010; and two members of the newly formed full-time Scotland Rugby 7s squad Adam Ashe and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne. A number of athletes are also fresh from success representing Great Britain at European and World junior and youth events including in athletics Tom Holligan, Nick Percy, Zoey Clark and Kimberley Reed, swimmers Craig Benson, Gareth Mills, Emily Jones and Mark Szaranek and cyclist Grant Ferguson, whilst the boxers have taken on the best of British at the GB Youth Amateur Championships and acquitted themselves well with lightweight, Charlie Flynn winning gold. After the athletes voted to select the flagbearer for the Games, the

programme concluded with Commonwealth Games and Youth Games swimming medallist Todd Cooper giving an athlete’s view of the Games and how special

it is to be part of the team.

Cheering you on

Passing on the baton...

Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport As Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport I would like to congratulate all the athletes on their selection for Youth Team Scotland and wish you every success when you compete in the 4th Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man. Your selection to compete in the Youth Games is a tremendous achievement; and you have demonstrated outstanding effort and dedication in pursuit of personal excellence so early in your sporting life. With the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow less than three years away, the Youth Games is an exciting concept and provides an excellent opportunity to compete in a multi-sport international event, gaining experience and building the confidence needed to take the step up to senior events when the time is right. You are the talent of the future. The Scottish Government, through sportscotland, is proud to support Scotland’s athletes and sports governing bodies by providing financial and technical assistance to help our athletes and coaches perform at the highest level. I wish you every success at the Youth Games, winning medals or reaching personal bests. I hope you enjoy the special atmosphere and experience and you are able to make new and lasting friendships with other young athletes from across the Commonwealth of nations. Good luck to Youth Team Scotland and I look forward to being in the Isle of Man to cheer you on.

Jennifer McIntosh, Commonwealth Games double gold and bronze medallist, Delhi 2010 and Youth Games silver medallist, Pune 2008Pune was the first multi-sport event I’d gone to and it gave me the experience of being part of a broader team with athletes from other sports and being around other countries and that helped a lot when I went to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. I kept a diary with my training notes. I recorded what was challenging, how I

coped and what I’d have done differently. I would advise other athletes to do that when they go to the Isle of Man.

Hannah Miley, Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Delhi 2010 and Youth Games multi-medallist, Bendigo 2004I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Commonwealth Youth Games at Bendigo in 2004. It is such a great opportunity when you are a young athlete to be part of a huge competition and also to interact with athletes from all over the world. I am always especially proud to stand up representing Scotland and no more so than in Delhi last

year. I wish all Youth Team Scotland athletes the best of luck next month in the Isle of Man.

Josh Taylor, Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Delhi 2010 and Youth Games bronze medallist, Pune 2008Seeing the team selected for this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man, has brought back some great memories for me. I competed at the last Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India in 2008 and it was a fantastic experience. If I could offer one piece of advice to the team heading to the Isle of Man, I’d just say to try and enjoy the experience as much as possible. The atmosphere in the camp in Pune was brilliant, and I would encourage everyone to get involved and make the most of what is a fantastic opportunity. I’d like to wish all the athletes and the whole team the best of luck at the Games in September. I hope you all enjoy it, and I hope to be part of future Commonwealth Games teams with you!

Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland

As Chair of sportscotland I would like to extend many congratulations on your selection for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games team. It is fantastic to see the wealth of young talent we have in Scotland, representing every corner of our proud nation. The selection standards across the seven sports are high, and all of you have demonstrated your ability in a number of national and international competitions over the past few months to secure your place on the team. The Commonwealth Youth Games offers you an early opportunity to experience a multi-sport Games and meet fellow athletes from across the Commonwealth. sportscotland is committed to the development of high performance sport in Scotland through our investment in governing bodies of sport, and Commonwealth Games Scotland. We fully endorse the important role that the Youth Games plays in the development of young athletes, which is why we provided Lottery funding to help deliver the inaugural Games in Edinburgh in 2000. At the Commonwealth Youth Games, Scotland has a good track record of success in terms of medals won, but more importantly we can see there are a significant number of athletes who go on to compete at the senior Commonwealth Games and Olympics. You only need to look back to Delhi last year where eight former Youth Games athletes came home with a medal and I hope this spurs you on to similar success. I hope you will enjoy the experience of being part of Youth Team Scotland and that you make many new friendships along the way. I also hope it gives you renewed determination to go on to compete and win medals for Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and beyond.

I wish you all the very best of luck in the Isle of Man.

How it all beganThe Commonwealth Youth Games concept was created by Scotland as a development opportunity to give athletes an international multi-sport Games experience. It bridges the gap between young athletes competing in their own sport specific events and the often difficult first experience of a senior multi-sport Games. The idea was endorsed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in August 2000 as part of Scotland’s Millennium celebrations.

Where it has been heldThe Games quickly proved to be a great success and the second Games followed in Bendigo, Australia in 2004, then Pune, India in 2008 and now the Isle of Man 2011.

Scotland’s Track RecordScotland has won a total of 102 medals so far at the Commonwealth Youth Games. However the number of participating countries, sports and allocated athlete places has varied significantly from Games to Games, making direct comparisons difficult. What is more important is the number of athletes who progress to compete with distinction for Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. To date 47 Commonwealth Youth Games athletes have progressed to the senior Commonwealth Games with 11 of them going on to win a total of 18 medals. These include swimmers Todd Cooper, Kirsty Balfour, Hannah Miley, Andy Hunter, Robbie Renwick and Lewis Smith, shooters Jenifer McIntosh and Kay Copland, boxer

Josh Taylor, gymnast Adam Cox and weightlifter Peter Kirkbride. At the last Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India, Youth Team Scotland won 18 medals (3 gold, 3 silver 12 bronze).

Isle of Man 2011This year’s Games will start with a training day on 7 September followed by the Opening Ceremony on 8 September. Then comes three days of hotly contested competition 9-11 September (four in boxing where the action starts on 8 September). The Youth Games will also feature a cultural programme on the 12 September to enable athletes to mix and learn about other cultures, before an informal Closing Ceremony at the Villa Marina on the Central Promenade.

Vicky Strange, General Team Manager

All will be revealed on 8 September when Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport will announce the winner. That evening the selected athlete will follow in the footsteps of Louise Carroll (Hockey), Gemma Nicol (Athletics) and Lisa Glover (Athletics) who carried the flag at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games.

After ten months of detailed planning and discussions with the seven sports governing bodies involved in the Youth Games it is brilliant to finally have our team of 50 athletes in place. I would just like to add my congratulations to all the athletes who have been selected for the Isle of Man. I am confident we have the best possible Scottish athletes representing Youth Team Scotland, supported by a great group of new and experienced staff, and I am extremely proud to be the General Team Manager for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games.

Our job now is to bring the athletes from the seven sports together as one team and create an environment in which they can excel at the Games. We made great progress on this at the Team Camp, where we got to know each other and set the scene for the Games.

Whilst I know all the athletes are highly motivated to do well and would love to come home with a medal, the Youth Games is mainly about an important development experience to prepare for the senior Games.

For this reason we don’t set a medal target – the focus is on achieving personal goals and gaining invaluable experience for the future and each and every one of the team is capable of achieving that.

Good luck for the Games and I look forward to working with you all!

Who will have the honour of carrying the flag?

Games guide – key sites in Douglas

One of the greatest honours for any Commonwealth Games and Youth Games team member is to be selected by fellow athletes to carry the saltire at the Games Opening Ceremony. This proud tradition will continue in the Isle of Man. Following a nomination process by the sports the following three athletes were shortlisted and voted on at the Team Camp. All three athletes have achieved significant success in their chosen sports and also have strong personal qualities making them excellent role models.

Tom Holligan – Athletics Tom represented Team GB at the 2011 European Youth Olympic Festival winning gold in the 200m in a new personal best time and helping the men’s 4x100m relay team to win the silver medal.

Grant Ferguson – Cycling2011 European Mountain Bike Cross Country Championships 2nd and European Road Race Championships 12th. Selected to represent GB at the 2011 Mountain Bike Cross Country World Championships in September.
