COUNSELING THE INDISCIPLINED

Discipline

• Discipline implies behaving in a desired manner.

• Discipline is the regulation and modulation of human activities to produce a controlled performance.

• Thus, discipline can now be defined as a condition in the organisation when employees conduct themselves in accordance with the organisation’s rules and standards of acceptable behaviour.

MAINTAINING EMPLOYEE DISCIPLINE AND PERFORMANCE

• Employee discipline is always a necessity for any growing business. Poor disciplined employees are poor to learn, poor to tune and poor to perform. The worst thing is that one indiscipline employee can make the whole workforce undisciplined, can destroy the quality of service/product, can harm the reputation of the company and can cost high.

Causes Of Indiscipline:

• The reasons could range anything from poor wages to, poor management and the communication gaps between the union and management.The common causes of indiscipline are as follows:

Counselling in the Workplace

• Counselling helps people to identify issues, difficulties and problems caused by thoughts, feelings and emotions and encourages them to respond and make progress towards resolution. even as a little bit of stress provides workers with the motivation to increase productivity and efficiency, too much stress can be counterproductive.

Purpose of Counseling

•  Employees experience conflict at work and sometimes break the rules. It then becomes counselors job to minimize the conflict and get things going back on track. Counseling the indisciplined play the prime role in prohibiting unwanted employee behaviors.

About the EAP

• An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers free and confidential assessments, short-term counseling, referrals, and follow-up services to employees who have personal and/or work-related problems

• occupational stress

• emotional distress

• major life events, including births, accidents and deaths

• health care concerns

Systems Theory

• Systems psychology is a branch of both theoretical psychology and applied psychology that studies human behaviour and experience in complex systems.

• It is based on the theoretical work of Roger Barker and Gregory Bateson. 

• Groups and individuals are considered as systems in homeostasis. 

Systems Theory (cont)

• Symptoms of an individual are symptoms of a system. Dysfunction is attributed to the system. Almost all symptoms of dysfunction are associated with systems. Systems choose individuals to express those symptoms.

• Some Reasons for dysfunction in system includes:

Cognitive behaviour therapy

• They aim to treat limited problems that affect employee’s current functioning

• It is a non-directive forms of counseling and coaching and through a collaborative process, termed ‘guided discovery’, individuals formulate their own conclusions and solutions.

• Practical and attainable goals are set during the course of counseling, as are homework assignments

• CBT is based on two specific tasks:

Cognitive Restructuring : to change thinking patterns

Behavioral Activation : in which patients learn to overcome obstacles to participating in enjoyable activities.

• CBT employs multiple strategies Socratic questioning, role playing, imagery, guided discovery, and behavioral experiments

• CBT is time limited. Typically, treatment with CBT lasts 14 to 16 weeks.

Gestalt Theory

• Awareness is the central concept of gestalt theory• In this model people are considered personally responsible

for their own destiny.• Gestalt Theory concentrates on here and now. Focus is

placed on current thoughts and feelings• Participants are encouraged to feel rather than think• Clients experience rather than analyze• Focus is on what is occurring not why it is happening• The key to success on gestalt therapy is awareness

Person centered counseling

•  It asserts that the client is fully capable of changing and growing into all that the client can and wants to be.

• However, the client – like all of us - needs favorable conditions in which to blossom and bloom.

• the counselor provides the growth-promoting climate and the client is then free and able to discover and grow as she / he wants and needs to.

• In a successful Client Centered session, the following characteristics will prevail:

1. Empathy

2. Acceptance or Unconditional Positive Regard

3. Genuineness

• Client Centered counselors would not say they use techniques – rather they have an approach of being empathetic, accepting and truly “there” for the client. Having said that the following skills are central:

1. Active and empathic listening

2. Reflection of content and feelings

3. Genuineness which may include appropriate self-disclosure by counselor
