Weekly information from us to you

The Eternal Flame is burning bright once more after being reignited this week to mark the completion of $130,000 of upgrade works.

The project began in October last year and is a jointly funded initiative between Wagga Wagga City Council, Wagga RSL Club, the RSL Sub Branch and the Federal Government to upgrade the flame as part of marking the Anzac Centenary.

The flame in the Victory Memorial Gardens was lit by WWII Veteran and the oldest member of the Wagga RSL Sub-Branch Colin Bell.

Every element of the new flame tells part of Australia’s Anzac story, with the circular shape of the pond representing eternity and the undisturbed water signifying tranquillity.

Stainless steel and brass have also been used to reference “age will not weary them”.

The new pond also features a concrete ring around it with LED lights and three new brass cover plates displaying

the words “Vigilance”, “Sacrifice” and “Liberty” to appropriately represent the significance of the flame.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Rod Kendall, paid tribute to those who gave their lives for Australia.

“This Eternal Flame is a fitting tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty and have laid down their lives so we might enjoy this beautiful, peaceful land in which we are privileged

to live today,” he said.“This project has been under way for

many months and it’s taken many hours of planning and hard work to get to this point. I think we would all agree this is a very useable and very important place for contemplation.”

The Mayor thanked the RSL Sub Branch, RSL Club and Federal Government who were all partners in the project.

The sounds of rock ‘n’ roll classics will ring out across Wollundry Lagoon on Friday 6 March when Frankie J Holden performs with the Australian Army Band Kapooka. The Twilight by the Lagoon concert series has been entertaining the community over the summer months and will culminate next week with the Finale. This year’s Twilight Finale guest performer was born in 1952, the same year as the FJ Holden was first manufactured.During the course of Frankie J Holden’s diverse career, he has become as much an icon as his automotive namesake. Holden began his show business career with the legendary rock group Ol’ 55 - one of the most successful Australian recording acts of all time – and has gone on to be recognised as one of our most versatile and popular performers. The free and family-friendly event takes place at one of Wagga’s truly beautiful locations: the banks of the Wollundry Lagoon. It will be a marvellous night with roving performers from the Fool Factory from 6pm onwards, with the concert to kick off at 7pm. Bring a picnic or purchase something delicious from the food vendors on the night. In the event of bad weather, the concert will be cancelled.

Here’s another sneak peek at the Museum of the Riverina’s exciting new exhibition, Taking it Easy in Wagga. This look into the lives of the Wagga community across the decades is on now until 22 March. The exhibition is the third in a series of collaborations between Charles Sturt University Archives and the Museum of the Riverina in recent years, all of which have focused on Wagga within its historical landscape. Visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/museum.

DRYING OFF (right): A group of Hardy’s employees and their families dry off after a river swim in the 1920s. Those who worked for the well-known timber and building company formed a tight-knit group in this period, enjoying camping trips, swimming and other social activities together.SHOWTIME (left): Wagga Showground was abuzz in the 1920s as showgoers check out attractions at various booths and tents. A Ferris wheel rises behind the canvas tops and showground buildings are visible on the right and in the left background.

ON YOUR MARK: Get set… go! And the two teams are off and racing down a quiet Wagga street in the 1960s. With the boys in control of their carts, the small girls look happy just going along for the ride.

PLAYGROUND GAMES: Children at Coreinbob School near Tarcutta (east of Wagga) play a game of “drop the handkerchief”, holding hands as a small girl runs around the circle, in 1927. The boys are in jumpers and shorts and the girls wear smocks. There does not appear to be a distinctive school uniform.

Day on 24 February, Council staff tidied up more than two tonnes of rubbish at Rodhams Road, Uranquinty.“It’s sad that some people choose to treat our community as a dumping ground, but

it’s amazing to see residents give up their time year after year to take part in Clean Up Australia Day and help make our city shine.”

What’s that shimmering in the “pointy end” of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery? With spotlights dancing off hanging glasswork, Sunny Wang’s Suchness – Ease will be on display on the Morrow Street side of the Civic Centre for the next 12 months. The world renowned glass artist’s work was donated to the gallery in 2012.The semi-permanent display consists

of more than a hundred delicate symbolic glass pieces, which have been painstakingly suspended to make up the installation in the eight-metre high window space. The work will light up on dusk every evening, adding an element of shadow play for the enjoyment of visitors passing by.More spotlights will be installed in March to further enhance the display’s impact.

This week’s pet of the week is Smeg, an approximately one-year-old female Kelpie cross with a gentle and affectionate nature.

Smeg loves receiving cuddles and would make a nice addition to a family or couple with a medium to large size yard with good fences.

She would love lots of walks and a game of catch, and Smeg also appears to be very intelligent.

You can adopt this young lass from the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter for $314.45, which includes microchipping, lifetime registration, desexing, vaccinations, worming and a heartworm test.

If you would like to meet Smeg or any of the animals at the shelter, please visit between 1pm and 4.15pm, Monday to Saturday.

The friendly Animal Management Rangers can be contacted on 6971 4651 during business hours.

If you have not thought about it before reading this, please see if you can help keep our city beautiful by taking part in Clean Up Australia Day tomorrow, Sunday 1 March.

Join Wagga Wagga City Council and the Wagga Wagga Tidy Town Committee by going down to the Wiradjuri Reserve (off Narrung Street) and sign up for a site and help other members of the community with this clean up.

There will be an induction session commencing at 9am.

Please make sure that you wear enclosed footwear, a hat and if possible bring along a pair of gloves and a water bottle. I also urge you to put some sunscreen on before you leave home.

Council has been doing a lot of work on the Riverside precinct project recently and it is well worthwhile to make a visit to the Wagga Wagga Beach area. It is really something to look at and perhaps you can organize to have a family barbecue there or show visitors what we have in our city.

At last Monday’s Council meeting, Councillor Paul Funnell presented a report and Council endorsed a

number of measures that we should use to start a war on noxious weeds in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area.

I mention this as I think it is very important, and as we are having Clean Up Australia Day.

At this time of the year it is important to attack those bindies, khaki weed and catheads. Some would have already set seed for the year, but if you have them, dig them out and dispose of them.

If you are not sure what you have got, contact Council or Local Land Services. Remember, biosecurity is everyone’s responsibility and please commence now.
