The Washington State Cougars will look to go 2-0 this season when it faces the University of Nevada Friday night in Reno. The game marks the 2005 season-opener for the Wolf Pack.
Friday’s game marks just the second meeting between the two schools, as the Cougars came away with a 31-7 victory to open the 2002 season. That game was played at Qwest Field in Seattle, home of the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cougars are coming off their fifth-straight season-opening win following a 38-26 home victory over Idaho Sept. 1.
Senior Jerome Harrison went 80 yards on the first play from scrimmage to give WSU a 7-0 lead 12 seconds into the contest. On the ensuing kickoff, DeWayne Patterson forced a Vandal fumble recovered by Adam West. Three plays later, Harrison went four yards for another score, making it 14-0, 1:09 into the contest.
Harrison finished the night with 165 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while receivers Michael Bumpus and Jason Hill combined for 13 catches, 184 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Alex Brink threw for 230 yards on 17-of-29 with three touchdowns. Defensively, senior linebacker Will Derting led the way with 11 tackles while true freshman Courtney Williams made five tackles, all on special teams. HARRISON EXPLOSIVE IN WSU OPENER: Senior Jerome Harrison blasted out
of the gate with an 80-yard touchdown run against Idaho in the Cougar’s first play from scrimmage last week, then tacked on 85 more yards to finish with 165 net rushing yards…Harrison has now rushed for over 100 yards in WSU’s last four games and in those contests is averaging 170 yards…in his six starts Harrison is averaging 132 yards per game…he didn’t become WSU’s starter last year until the seventh game of the 2004 season…he finished with 900 rushing yards last year.
PACIFIC-10 NOMINATIONS: WSU’s Pacific-10 Conference award nominations
this week were Jerome Harrison (offense), Will Derting (defense) and Courtney Williams (special teams)…Harrison rushed for 165 yards and scored twice, Derting made 11 tackles, broke up one pass and shared in one TFL, while Williams, a true freshman, made five tackles, all on special teams.
ESPN TELEVISES WSU AT NEVADA: ESPN will televise Washington State’s
non-conference football game at Nevada Friday, beginning at 7 p.m….Dave Barnett will call the action, with Kelly Stouffer providing commentary, while Anne Marie Anderson will provide sideline reports.
WSU GAMES TELEVISED BY ABC, FSN AND ESPN: Five Cougar football
games have already been chosen for live television coverage this fall, starting with Thursday’s WSU-Idaho opener on FSN Northwest…ESPN will be on hand a week later to televise the Cougar game at Nevada, beginning at 7 p.m….ABC selected WSU’s Pacific-10 Conference game at USC as its Pac-10 game of the week…kickoff time at Los Angeles will be 12:30 p.m….at the end of the regular season, FSN will be on hand to televise WSU’s home game with Oregon at 7:15 p.m. and then the annual Apple Cup battle with Washington from Seattle at 12:15 p.m….additional Pac-10 games could be chosen for live TV coverage, either 12 or six days in advance of the game, per the Pac-10 television contract.

has made 236 tackles in his illustrious career, can move near the top of several career lists this season…among Derting’s highlights:
• With 14.5 career sacks Derting ranks tied for ninth on WSU’s list…eight sacks this year would put him among the top four;
• Derting has 98.0 yards in sacks to rank 10th on WSU’s career list;

A LONG TIME BETWEEN PULLMAN GAMES: WSU
opened in Martin Stadium Sept. 1 and doesn’t return home until Oct 8 when Stanford visits the Cougars…the last time WSU had an extended absence between home games was in 1990 when WSU hosted UCLA Sept. 29, then was on the road until playing ASU at home Nov. 10.
COUGARS PLAY 12 ROOKIES: WSU played nine freshmen
and three transfers in the season’s first game…it is the most first-year players to see action in Bill Doba’s 17 years at WSU…the transfers to play were DE Lance Broadus, DB Lorenzo Bursey and DB DeWayne Patterson…the freshmen to see action were DT A’i Ahmu, LB Cory Evans, WR Brandon Gibson, LB Jason Stripling, LB Greg Trent, WR Benny Ward, LB Courtney Williams, DB Michael Willis, RB DeMaundray Woolridge…nine of the newcomers play on defense and three are offensive players.
WSU HAS EXTRA TIME TO PREPARE: Washington State
has extra time to prepare for each of its three opponents following its Sept. 1 season-opener against Idaho…Cougars will have one extra day for their Sept. 9 game at Nevada and Sept. 17 game against Grambling State in Seattle…WSU has a bye week before opening Pac-10 play at Oregon State Oct. 1…WSU is 6-4 over the last five seasons when having extra time to prepare, including 5-2 following a bye week.
STREAKS AND NOTES: • WSU has won seven straight non-conference games in
Pullman…the last home loss was to Idaho in 2000; • WSU has outscored Idaho 197-55 in racking up a 5-0 record
over Idaho in the 21st century; • WSU opens the 2005 season against two Western Athletic

BRINK THROWS THREE TD PASSES: Alex Brink
completed 16 of 20 passes for three scores and 226 yards in the first, third and fourth quarters as WSU handed Idaho a 38-26 loss in the 2005 opener for both teams…the Cougar offense struggled late in the first quarter and in the second quarter after taking a early 14-0 lead…in the second quarter Brink was 1-for-9 and had two deflected passes picked off…Brink’s second half performance, 9-of-11 for 170 yards and three TD passes, fueled WSU’s 21-point second half as the broke away from Idaho after a 17-12 halftime score.
MISC. WSU PLAYER NOTES: • Kyle Basler has averaged 40 or more yards 28 times in his
career and has booted 46 punts 50 yards or longer; • Mkristo Bruce has 9.5 career sacks, 7.5 in the last 10
games; • DeWayne Patterson, in his Cougar debut at free safety,
made five tackles and recorded one sack; • WSU lists three first-year freshmen as backup
linebackers…Cory Evans, Greg Trent and Jason Stripling all are listed #2 and played against Idaho;
• Courtney Williams, a true freshman, looked like a special teams veteran against Idaho, making five tackles…he had one of the top 400 meter times in the nation (preps) last year;
• Troy Bienemann has caught passes in 27 of his 35 games; • Alex Brink has thrown nine TD passes in his six starts; • Michael Bumpus had a career-high eight receptions against
Idaho for a career-best 88 yards; • Jerome Harrison has gone over the 100-yard rushing mark
in each of his last four games; • Jason Hill has racked up over 100 receiving yards in four
games and come close twice, 98 yards against UCLA last year and 96 yards against Idaho last week;
• Loren Langley has hit 35 of 37 extra point kicks…a blocked PAT and a bad snap accounted for the misses.
COUGS OPEN 2006 AT AUBURN: Washington State and the
Auburn Tigers will open their respective seasons next fall in a game to be televised by ESPN…the game will be played at Auburn and does not have a return game in the deal, which was put together for national television…the two teams have not previously met on the gridiron.

scoring streaks on the line: • The Cougars have scored in 228 consecutive Pacific-10
games, the longest active streak for any league team...the last time WSU was shut out in Pac-10 play was at Oregon State in 1975.
• WSU has scored in 239 consecutive games since a 44-0
shutout at Ohio State in 1984…the streak is the second longest among D-I schools…schools with streaks over 200 games are: Michigan 251, WSU 239, Oregon 233, Florida State 210 and Florida 205;
• The Cougars have scored in 185 consecutive Martin
Stadium home games since a 21-0 loss to Oregon State in Pullman in 1956.

offensive tackle Calvin Armstrong led a group of 10 WSU Cougars named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference football teams selected by the Pac-10 head coaches in 2004…for the second time in his career Armstrong was named to the league’s first team…he also was a first team pick in 2002…four Cougars received second team recognition, return specialist Michael Bumpus (freshman), linebacker Will Derting (junior), offensive tackle Sam Lightbody (senior) and receiver Jason Hill (sophomore)…the five Cougars gaining honorable mention honors were punter Kyle Basler (junior), linebacker Scott Davis (sophomore), running back Jerome Harrison (junior), center Nick Mihlhauser (junior) and cornerback Karl Paymah (senior).
SIX COUGS NAMED TO PAC-10 ACADEMIC TEAM: Six
Cougars have been named to the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic team, including three-time first-team honoree Pat Bennett (3.43 grade point average, hotel administration major)…Bennett, a linebacker, was joined on the first team by tight end Troy Bienemann (3.75, communications) and offensive lineman Riley Fitt-Chappell (3.49, management information systems)…Bienemann also was a first team pick in 2003, while Fitt-Chappell was on the second team…Bienemann posted the highest GPA among the league’s first-team selections…second team honorees went to running back Kevin McCall (3.21, undeclared) and defensive end Matt Mullennix (3.35, business administration), while quarterback Alex Brink (3.48, sport management) was an honorable mention selection.
BIENEMANN NAMED TO ACADEMIC TEAM:
Washington State junior tight end Troy Bienemann was named to the CoSIDA District 8 All-Academic first team for the second straight year…he was among seven players from the Pacific-10 conference named to the offensive team.
ARMSTRONG, PAYMAH TO SHRINE GAME: A pair of
Cougar seniors, offensive tackle Calvin Armstrong (Centralia) and cornerback Karl Paymah (Culver City, Calif.), were selected to play in the annual East-West Shrine Game Jan. 15, 11 a.m., at SBC Park in San Francisco.
SWOGGER’S SEASON ENDS: Sophomore Josh Swogger’s
2004 season ended with a broken navicular bone in his right foot…Swogger threw 93 passes without an interception between the fourth quarter of the New Mexico season opener and the Oregon game…he suffered several injuries during the season, including his right knee (posterior cruciate ligament), left shoulder (strain) and left ankle (contusion).
COUGAR SENIORS: The Cougars dressed 13 seniors for their
final collegiate game Nov. 20 against the Washington Huskies: FS Hamza Abdullah, OL Patrick Afif, OT Calvin Armstrong, LB Pat Bennett, SS Jeremy Bohannon, RB Chris Bruhn, DT Steve Cook, RB Blair Hawkins, OT Sam Lightbody, CB Karl Paymah, CB Tyler Sellers, WR John Williams and LB Brian Winter.
PAC-10 POW: Two Cougars captured Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week awards three times during the 2004 season:
• Week 1 - Punter Kyle Basler was named Special Teams POW after his performance at New Mexico when he averaged 470.0 with seven punts and had three 50yards or longer;
• Week 4 - Punter Kyle Basler was named Special Teams POW after booming a school record punt 87 yards at Arizona…he averaged 53.4 yards and his net was 49.9 yards;
• Week 10 - Running back Jerome Harrison was named Co-Offensive POW after rushing a school record 42 times at UCLA, gaining 247 yards, the third most ever by a Cougar in a single game.
HARRISON SETS RECORD: Jerome Harrison’s 247 rushing
yards at UCLA in 2004 ranked as the third best total in WSU history and his 42 carries in that game bettered by one the school record…he also had three rushing touchdowns, which tied him for eighth on WSU’s all-time list:
HARRISON HITS 900 YARDS: Transfer Jerome Harrison ran
for 900 yards in his first season with the Cougars and scored nine TDs, despite only starting the last five games of the year…the Pac-10 honorable mention pick rushed for 515 yards over the final three games, a 172 yard average…he averaged 118.4 yards over the final seven games…highlights included 117 yards (14 carries) against Oregon, 247 at UCLA, 118 yards at ASU, 150 yards against Washington.
MULTIPLE RECEIVERS: The Cougars like to use numerous
receivers…in 2004 nine players caught passes at Oregon State, while eight caught passes against Arizona, seven had receptions against New Mexico, Idaho, USC, UCLA and ASU, while six caught passes against Colorado, Oregon and Stanford and four had receptions against Washington…in 2003 at least seven WSU players caught passes in each of the Cougars’ first nine games and in 10 of the 13 games.

Jerome Harrison chalked up 239 all-purpose yards at UCLA, the eighth best total ever by a Cougar and the most since Nian Taylor had 266 yards against Idaho in 1998…the most recent Cougar running back to have a Top 10 performance was Michael Black’s 265 yards against California in 1996.

defensive line, Odell Howard and Mkristo Bruce, were high school quarterbacks…Howard prepped at Pomona High (Pomona, Calif.) and Bruce at Liberty High near Renton…Bruce passed for 718 yards and seven touchdowns and ran for 602 as a senior, while Howard threw for 1,085 yards and 10 touchdowns his senior year.
