He could have broken out on any play. We started shooting on defense, tackling well and strip- ping the ball. We actually scored on defense, which is awesome,” Scaglione said. “Like Joe said, we came out a little flat then towards the end we kicked it up and played great. I’m really proud to come out with such a great victory our senior year. I was pretty emo- tional but I am happy we got it done today,” Kane said. “We knew number 22 was bounc- ing around a lot, and knew we had to stay in our lanes, because he was going to cut back a lot, and I was right there. I’m glad we went out with a win. I’m glad we went out with a shutout to cap off what we really worked for all year,” Anderson said. “Defense played well all the time. We kept the tempo going. We knew it was just a matter of time for the offense to step it up. We made the plays we needed to. That number 22 was explosive. We knew on any given play, things could change, so we had to keep our heads in the game,” Sweeney said. The second half began well for the Blue Devils when Kane fielded a short kickoff and returned it to the Plainfield 37. Rawles finished it off with his 37- yard TD run with 27 seconds off the clock. Less than 30 seconds later, cornerback Brett Robertshaw and linebacker Jackson Simcox bashed the running back and forced a fumble (Robershaw stripped) and Simcox smothered the ball in the end zone. Hogge’s successful point after made the score, 20-0. Midway through the third quarter, Sweeney and linebacker Mike O’Connor forced a fumble at the Cardinal 10. Three plays later, with 3:09 on the clock, Hogge hit Elliott for the eight-yard TD. Early in the fourth quarter, Simcox recovered another fumble, but the Blue Devils returned the favor when Hogge’s pass was intercepted in the end zone and returned four yards. After a Cardinal drive stalled at the Westfield 18, on the third play, Elliott turned a reception into a 46-yard gain. Rawles broke loose for 30 yards to the Plainfield nine then took care of busi- ness with his nine-yard TD sprint around the left side with 53 seconds remaining. The Cardinals attempted to avoid the shutout and failed, while the Blue Devils attempted and failed to put Head Coach Jim DeSarno “on ice” with a bucket of Gatorade. “I’m happy! I have been happy when we won all year. These kids played hard. We got a great effort from our defense. Our defense car- ried us all year, and it’s nice to see Eugene go out the right way with three touchdowns. He had such a great year,” Coach DeSarno said. Although they had a good feeling about their abilities throughout the sea- son, the playoff game against top-seeded Ridge when the Blue Devils gave the Red Devils all they could handle, proved they could play with the best. “We knew we had a lot of talent here. We got guys who believe in each other. It’s fun to play together. Ridge was a very good team. As long as we gave 100 percent, that’s all we could ask for. I’m proud to be on this team,” Sweeney said. “When you play a team like Ridge, you got to be perfect. We turned the ball over three times. We knew we had a pretty good team. We knew that all year. I have not been able to say that to too many teams, but this was a good football team,” Coach DeSarno said. Westfield now leads the series with Plainfield, 57-45-7.
