On Bainbridge Island on Janu- ary 19, they scored 173.8 in their only loss of the current season—by 1 point! During their senior- night home meet on January 26, the team scored a season high 178.4 against West Seattle and Chief Sealth. Standouts: In the senior night meet on January 26, Lily Gunning ’18 placed first in bars (9.4), beam (8.85), floor (9.6), and all-around (37.25). Kaysa Lundberg ’19 placed first on vault (9.55), second on floor (9.45), and second in all-around (35.2). Maria Gallivan ’18 placed second on beam (8.75) and third on Floor (9.4). At the Metro All Comers Meet on January 27, Isabella Gunning ’21 placed first on bars (7.1), beam (9.1), and all around (33.9), and second on vault (8.5) and floor (9.2). Maya Hegde ’21 placed first on vault (8.7) and second in all- around (31.3). Melissa Hamling ’18 placed fourth on beam (8.2), third on vault (8.2), and seventh in all-around (27.7). The Cougars claimed their first all-comers title with a team score of 95.4. Crew Winter Training Wraps; Deadlines for Spring Athletes

Crew Highlights: HNA crew rounded out the winter training season with Northwest Ergomania on January 27 in Seattle. The team had over 60 competitors racing a collective 2,000 meters on indoor rowing machines against athletes from other rowing teams from across the re-gion.

Standouts: HNA crew had six top-3 finishes. Olivia Rataezyk ’20 placed 2nd in the Cox-swain 500m Dash. In the Junior Novice 2k, Honoria Payton ’21 placed 2nd and Romy Forster ’19 placed 3rd. In the Junior Light-weight 2k, Sophia Longawa ’19 placed 2nd and Olivia Bay ’20 placed 3rd. In the Junior 2k, Claire Widzgowski ’19 placed 2nd.

Where to see them: Cougar crew kicks off spring racing in March with the first official regattas on March 17: the travel team will compete at the Shamrock Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif., while the home team contends at the Green Lake Regatta.

Post-Season Ticket Prices: Basketball, Gymnastics Post-season Metro and District tournament fees for basketball and gymnastics are $7 for adults and students without activity cards, $5 for students with activity cards and for senior citizens. Ticket prices for the State basketball tournament have not yet been released by the WIAA. For the State gymnastics tournament, February 15–16 at the Tacoma Dome Events Center: $17 adults, $13 students and seniors.

Winter Sports Awards Evenings The basketball and gymnastics programs will hold their end of season awards night at HNA on Wednesday, March 7, at 6 p.m. Basketball will meet in the Café; gymnastics meets in the SAC. Coaches will e-mail families with specific details. All end-of-season gifts to coaches should be modest in price and approved by the Athletic Director; all monies for gifts must be given directly to the Athletic Director.

Spring Athletes: Physicals and Paperwork Due Athletes who want to turn out for softball, lacrosse, tennis, track & field, or Ultimate Frisbee must have their sports-physical forms on file in the Athletic Office by Wednesday, February 14. (For crew, the deadline was January 31.) Turnouts for spring crew begin Monday, February 5; for lacrosse, softball, tennis, track & field, and Ultimate Frisbee on Monday, February 26. The form for a physical exam, which must be signed by a physician, is good for 13 months.

In addition to a current sports physical, students must also register for their spring sport on Family ID by February 14. IMPORTANT: students who participated in a fall or winter sport must still register for their spring sport on Family ID. Registration instructions can be found on the school website under Athletics—Eligibility.

Crew: Passports/Enhanced IDs Required Because of requirements for crossing the U.S.–Canadian border, all crew athletes, including novices, must have valid passports or enhanced Washington State ID to participate in the Brentwood regatta on Vancouver Island in April. Please ensure your daughter has a valid document in order to travel to and from Canada.

Spring Sports Tryout Information; New Lacrosse Coach

Spring Crew tryouts begin Monday, February 5 at Lake Union Crew. Final rosters will be announced by February 15. Registration materials and detailed information.

Track & Field (a no-cut sport) will meet in the gym on Monday, February 26, at 3 p.m. and do local workouts from 3 to 5 p.m. Athletes will travel to the track Tuesday through Friday. Appropriate clothing, shoes, and water required.

Lacrosse: Tryouts will be held Monday, February 26, to Friday, March 2 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. HNA’s home field will rotate throughout the week: Mondays at Delridge Playfield, Tuesdays at Lower Woodland #2, Wednesdays at Washington Park, Thursdays at Georgetown Playfield, Fridays TBD. The practice rotation and games schedule will be posted on the HNA Athletics Calendar.

Ultimate Frisbee tryouts will be conducted February 26–March 2. Students will gather at HNA for a brief meeting on Monday, February 26, then proceed to Volunteer Park for tryouts from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The schedule for the rest of the week will be announced that day. Athletes should bring the following to tryouts: cleats, running shoes, water, white shirt, and dark shirt.

Softball tryouts will be conducted February 26–March 2. All athletes should report to the gym from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 26. The schedule for the rest of tryout week will be announced that day.

Tennis: Returning players will meet Monday, February 26, at Volunteer Park courts; new athletes trying out for tennis will meet at Miller Playfield tennis courts, 3 to 5 p.m.

Spring Sports Parents Meetings A general sports parent meeting covering the HNA Athletic Department Handbook was held at the beginning of the school year for all sports. Parents of lacrosse, softball, tennis, track & field, and Ultimate Frisbee athletes will be notified of sport-specific parent meetings once teams are determined.

Cougar Club Merchandise HNA Cougar Club Merchandise is available for sale through the Athletic Office. A list of available items is on the HNA website. Please contact Ms. Lacey London ([email protected]) with requests. Merchandise may also be purchased from the Reception Office on the second floor.

Athletic Bags Students who wish to purchase a sturdy, roomy athletic bag in school colors may order one through the Athletic Office. The cost is $65. Students may have bags personalized with their names.

HNA Welcomes New Lacrosse Coach We are pleased to welcome Lauren McDaniel as the new head coach of Cougar lacrosse. Coach McDaniel, who attended Bainbridge High School, received both her B.A. (Sociology/Anthropology) and M.A. (Educational Administration) from University of the Redlands in California. She served for five years as head women’s lacrosse coach at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc. She returned to the Northwest in 2013, serving as Bellevue High School’s athletic director for four years. Welcome, Coach Lauren!
