COTTON REMAINS THEWORLD’S FAVOURITENATURAL FIBRE, WITH A HUGE RANGE OF DESIRABLECHARACTERISTICSINCLUDING VERSATILITY,APPEARANCE,PERFORMANCE AND ABOVEALL, NATURAL COMFORT.Cotton is used to produce thousands of useful products from sheets and towels, tarpaulins and tents, pharmaceuticals andmedical supplies - even astronauts’ inflightspace suits.

In the United States of America, textile millsconsume approximately 7.6 million bales ofcotton a year. Of this, about 57% is convertedinto clothing, more than a third into homefurnishings (bedspreads to window shades)and the remainder into industrial products (eg medical supplies, industrial thread andtarpaulins.)

The Properties of CottonCotton has many special properties includingthe following remarkable characteristics:

Cotton is hypoallergenic meaning itdoesn’t irritate sensitive skin or causeallergies

Cotton is very soft, which is why it isparticularly favoured in underwear rangesand other garments that are worn close to the skin. The ends of cotton fibres arespun very tightly into the yarn so that thefabric doesn’t irritate skin or cause staticelectricity

Unlike synthetic products cotton does notcontain any chemicals and therefore is anatural product

Cotton is long lasting if looked after well

Cotton can be easily blended with otherfibres including synthetics such as polyesterand lycra and natural fibres like wool

Cotton is one of the easiest fabrics to dye, because it is white in colour and very absorbant

Stains can be easily removed from cotton

Cotton is a good conductor of heat. Inother words, it draws heat away from yourskin to keep you cool, making it verycomfortable to wear

Cotton becomes stronger when wet

Cotton absorbs moisture easily and cantake up to one fifth of its weight in water

Cotton’s strength and absorbency make it an ideal fabric for medical and personalhygiene products such as bandages and swabs

Cotton is very versatile – it can be blended, coated, finished, is dry cleanable, machinewashable and easy to print

Cotton is not easily damaged by sunlightand is therefore often used in themanufacture of curtains, tents andtarpaulins

Cotton breathes easily as a result of itsunique fibre structure. This attribute makescotton more comfortable to wear thanartificial fibres unable to provide ventilation

The cool properties of cotton are ideal for the Australian environment. Australiansare one of the highest cotton consumers in the world due to our climate and lifestyle

The Properties of Cotton

Cotton lint is spun then woven or knitted into fabrics such asvelvet, corduroy, chambray, velour, jersey and flannel

About 60% of the world’s total cotton harvest is used tomake clothing, with the rest used in home furnishings andindustrial products

Well known cotton products include denim jeans, socks, towels, t-shirts, bed sheets and underwear

More unusual uses of cotton fibre include tents, car tyrecord, fishnets and book binding

Over half the weight of unprocessed cotton (seed cotton) ismade up of seed, a valuable by-product of fibre production

One tonne of cottonseed yields approximately 200kg of oil, 500kg of cottonseed meal and 300kg of hulls

Global cottonseed production can potentially provide theprotein requirements for half a billion people per year andmany billions of other animals

The most common uses of cottonseed are oil for cooking andfeed for livestock. Cottonseed is pressed to make cottonseedoil. Cottonseed can be made into a meal and is a popularfeed for cattle and livestock as it’s a great source of energy

Cottonseed oil can also be used in a range of industrialproducts such as soap, margarine, emulsifiers, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, rubber, paint, water proofing and candles

Cottonseed oil is cholesterol free, high in poly-unsaturatedfats and contains high levels of anti oxidents (vitamin E) thatcontribute to its long shelf life

Cotton linters are fine, very short fibres that remain on thecottonseed after ginning. They are curly fibres typically lessthan 3mm long

Linters are used in the manufacture of paper (such asarchival paper and bank notes) and as a raw material in themanufacture of cellulose plastics

Linters are commonly used for medical supplies such as bandages, cotton buds, cotton balls and x-rays
