Costume Shop Stitcher Job Summary

The Costume Shop stitcher sews costumes for the theatre company, preferably using an industrial machine, or domestic sewing machines and hand sewing. The stitcher aids the Cutter/Draper as needed, sews mock-ups and actual costumes in a variety of styles and periods, and alters existing costumes. This position reports directly to the Assistant Costume Director.

Responsibilities and Duties

Sew theatrical costumes to the specifics requested accurately and in a timely fashion

Sew costumes with limited supervision Use industrial and domestic sewing machines, including sergers, blindstitch and

other specialty machines. Use hand sewing for finishing work Maintain costumes by washing, ironing, steaming, pressing, and categorizing as

needed Organize stock rooms, costume racks and road boxes Pack road boxes and create an inventory list. Perform other job related functions as assigned. Complete notes from all costume fittings and dress rehearsals Ensure that equipment and supplies are properly maintained. Assist with the organization and storage of all fabrics, trims, and supplies.

Qualifications

Knowledgeable and skilled at operating industrial and domestic sewing machines.

Theatre experience preferred, but not required Able to perform a variety of construction and alteration techniques with minimum

guidance. Demonstrated proficiency in hand sewing techniques Knowledge of/and experience in a variety of costume construction techniques

including tailoring, period construction techniques, and alterations. Demonstrated knowledge in theatrical construction and quick rigging techniques Good working knowledge of costume history Ability to efficiently complete assigned projects. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.

Ability to operate shop equipment including industrial and domestic sewing machines, multi needle and leather sewing machines, steam irons, and cutting tools
