Former President’s Insights

The Club honored 12 former Presidents at the meetingon Thursday. These included Tim Kelley, Fred Corey,Harry Stroud, Bob McMillin, Dan Cross, Bill Spangler,Bob Cook, Howard Glenn, Bruce Long, Dick Evans, PeteKruse and Robin Durkee. Although their comments atlunch were not publically broadcast, it was interestingto hear their comments on their triumphs, strugglesand contributions to the Club. On a personal note, twoof our former Presidents lost long devoted spouses ator during the time of their holding the office. It wasgenerally agreed that it was a good thing to have theduties of President to keep from retreating into theirgrief. Several spoke of struggles associated withdeclining membership, changing the location of ourmeetings, instituting Ladies’ Day, the 50 year celebra-tion, changing the format and printer for Crackers, bringing the control of the roster to our purchased clubcomputer, changing from snail mail to email for deliveryof Crackers to most members, elimination of the headtable, control of the questions asked during Q & Aafter a speaker and that the quality of the “humor” ofthe Presidents which could use some improvement. Itwas agreed that being President was not a burdenbecause of all the help the extremely talented andmotivated Cosmo members give by way of service asofficers and on committees. Cosmo members shouldbe proud of the accomplishments of our former presi-dents and their dedication to the success of the Club.

nized by numerous organizations for his extraordinary hu-manitarian services.Harry spoke of his early orientation to math and science asthe start of his decision to become a medical doctor. Hechose ophthalmology because it provided services to patientsof all ages and genders and was a clinical practice rather thanresearch. He shared some early experiences as an intern atthe Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, an open employee onthe staff of the CIA, general practice in Riverside before hisadmission to the Stein Clinic. His decision to accept appoint-ment at the St. John Hospital in South Africa was significant inhis later decision to use his skill internationally and providedHarry his wife and four children with a chance to travelaround the world. His first direct experience in providing services to indigentpatients was to Indians in Mexico. He was able to provideservices to 2000 patients over 22 working days with his staff. He shared some interesting insights regarding the providing ofhuman eyes originating in London, transported from Heathrowwith the help of the Lion’s Club, and arriving in Kabul, Af-ghanistan after an overnight flight for transplanting intoindigent patients. He came to the conclusion that existingmedical systems and services were not geared to providingnecessary cataract surgery for the 39 million indigent patientsin the developing world. This gave him the reason to con-sider founding an organization to do just that.He was able to get invaluable organizational help from SCOREin Santa Barbara in the person of Bill Crockett who became aco-founder of SEE International and was its first administrator. The international headquarters of SEE is located in Santa

Barbara and it has 600-700 local affiliated organizationsaround the world, organized much like a service club. Thelocal organization invites doctors to make a visit after obtain-ing the appropriate governmental permits and cooperation inorder to avoid running afoul of local health standards. Thework is accomplished by collaboration between local doctorsand visiting eye surgeons and is really based on sharing ofexperiences both technically and based on local conditions. This service was subsequently expanded to include the SantaBarbara Vision Care Program to provide service to patients inSanta Barbara County who were unable to afford proper eyesurgical care.Harry shared his insights as to the five changes which need tobe made to improve eye health care worldwide. Training ofmedical and administrative personnel is first, with properfacilities being the second most important element to immedi-ately follow. Equipment and consumable supplies are impor-tant. Most important is political will to deal with the problem.Cataracts are the number one cause of blindness in the worldtoday and may be solved by a 20 minute operation which willcompletely cure the problem and return the patient and hiscare givers to a productive role in society. The leadership ofHarry Brown is an inspiration to all of us at Cosmo and asignificant gift to our society. Bravo Harry!
