Coverage of Ice Sheets
BackgroundIce sheets are acknowledged by WMO and UNFCCC as Essential Climate Variable (ECV) needed to make significant progress in the generation of global climate products and derived information.ObjectiveInternational collaboration through PSTG to provide a level of data continuity through spaceborne data collection over ice sheets.
Approach• Stripmap mode (3‐5 m res., 40 km swath).• ScanSAR wide region mode (30 m res.,
100 km swath).• ScanSAR huge region mode (100 m res.,
200 km swath).• High acquisition opportunities in the polar
regions.
Metric estimatesLarge datasets available in CSK archive.Dataseta on various glaciers, ice sheets located in polar regions is available.InSAR coverage with different time gap is available (i.e.: 1, 4, 8, 16 days).
COSMO‐SkyMed Greenland 2008‐2010
ObjectiveBi‐daily acquisitions of the Petermann glacier from 2010.
Monitoring of main glaciers and ice sheets.
Approach• Stripmap mode (3‐5 m res., 40 km swath).• ScanSAR wide region mode (30 m res.,
100 km swath).• ScanSAR huge region mode (100 m res.,
200 km swath).• CSK pairs (even with 18 minutes gap).
Metric estimatesDatasets available in CSK archive.Large dataset from 2008 to onwards.Glaciers and ice sheets, daily monitoring from 2008.
COSMO‐SkyMed Greenland 2011‐2012
ObjectivePost IPY: monitoring the polar routes in 1‐day.COSMO‐SkyMed constellation is able to monitor wide areas in relatively short time.COSMO‐SkyMed agility is able to monitor the north pole.Continuous monitoring of main glaciers and ice sheets.
Approach• Stripmap mode (3‐5 m res., 40 km swath).• ScanSAR wide region mode (30 m res.,
100 km swath).• ScanSAR huge region mode (100 m res.,
200 km swath).Metric estimatesDatasets available in CSK archive.Polar routes monitoring scenario in 1‐day using ScanSAR huge region.

COSMO‐SkyMed Greenland 2013‐2016
ObjectiveMonitoring of the Fram strait, to provide information on east Greenland current, sea ice drift.ASI contribution to PSTG.Continuous monitoring of main glaciers and ice sheets in Greenland and in the arctic region.
Approach• Stripmap mode (3‐5 m res., 40 km swath).• ScanSAR wide region mode (30 m res.,
100 km swath).• ScanSAR huge region mode (100 m res.,
200 km swath).
Metric estimatesDatasets already available in CKS archive.Fram strait from April 2013 to onwards. The campaign on monitoring main glaciers and ice sheets is started in the past and it is planned to continue increasing acquisitions in 2014.Even using inSAR acquisitions in 1 day / 8 days.
COSMO‐SkyMed Antarctica 2008‐2012
ObjectiveMonitoring of main glaciers (i.e.: Drygalsky) and ice sheets.Monitoring of polynya in Ross Bay.Monitoring of Antarctic Peninsula (breaking of the Wilkins ice shelf).Continuous monitoring of French‐Italian Concordia Station (Dome‐C) and M. Zucchelli Station from 2012.
Approach• Stripmap mode (3‐5 m res., 40 km swath)• InSAR acquisitions.• ScanSAR wide region (30 m., 100 km
swath).• ScanSAR huge region (100 m., 200 km
swath).• Multiple acquisitions in short time.
Metric estimatesDatasets available in CSK archive.Acquisitions in 1‐day / 8‐days are possible.
