Welcome to the 1st edition of the C4 Connection. In an attempt to bemuch more environmentally friendly we have gone to an electronicversion from the older catalogue style. With over 30,000 residents inthe new combined area that Central Corydon Community Center (C4)now represents, we felt it was time to make this change.

Within this new catchment we know that we have a very diversedemographic to meet the needs of. Here is a little information onwho lives in this area:

• Total Population 30,000+• Age 11% under 14 15% seniors (Canadian average is 7%)• Single Family 16%

I invite you to explore our new website at www.centralcorydoncc.comand learn more about what is going on at each of our three sites. Youwill be able to review the calendar of events to learn more about thevarious programs that are available and to see which ones will fitwith your own personal family schedule. With a wide variety ofprograms and sports to select from, we feel we have something tooffer everyone in the community. This was evident this summer withthe huge success of our summer camp options.

Your C4 Board and its various committees are working on a numberof new initiatives all with the goal of improving our service offering

to the residents of the C4 area. We need your help to let us knowwhat we can be doing to enhance your own experience, plus weneed your help by volunteering to assist us with the manycommittees we have underway. Volunteers are the backbone of thecommunity and in the past year alone we estimate 75,000 +volunteer hours were utilized.

Currently a major review of our programs/facilities is underway. Wewill are looking at partnerships and what changes and improvementsneed to be made to each of the 3 sites we have today to meet thegrowing and changing needs of our area. Stay tuned as we expect tobe holding information meetings in October and November to sharewith you what our future plans are. It is very important to reiterate, that our plan is to maintain 3 very active and vibrant sites and thatwe have no plans whatsoever to close any facility.

Please pass along any feedback you might have to Jim Carson theGeneral Manager of C4, and of course if you are prepared to donatesome of your time to assisting on a committee please also let Jimknow.

Please note the below policies that blanket all sportsprograms at C4:

Sport Team FormationsAll teams at C4 are formed based on the number of registeredplayers-if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed inone age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in thesame division they will be as equally balanced as possible. Central Corydon Community Centre runs an in-house league exclusively at River Heights. Thenumber of players is restricted to manageable numbers (max of 12 players per team). Startingin early October, an initiation program of 8 sessions will be held to assist the players with somebasic skills. The season consists of 18-20 indoor games. Teams will practice once and some-times twice a week, typically outdoors. We do encourage our teams to participate outside theclub in tournaments and exhibition games to prepare the players for traveling hockey andhave the added experience of playing new teams. When we assign teams, our top priority isequal skill level. We TRY to keep friends together, but there is NO guarantee this can be done.We only adjust for balance, not because a player wants to be with their friends. It is alsorecommended that young skaters enroll in a Learn to Skate program. This league is non-competitive and focuses on skill development and good sportsmanship.

Players trying for AAA or AA must alsoregister for C4 hockey to prevent problemsrelated to having a place to play if the playerdoes not make the AAA or AA team. Yourcheque will be returned or destroyed, as peryour instructions, in the event of the playersmaking the team. Players must be registeredwith Central Corydon prior to registeringwith the Rangers or the Monarchs. AllTravelling team players must register at theirhome community centre. Winnipeg MinorHockey Association rules regarding transferswill be strictly enforced. In the event of anAPHA team formation involving two or morecommunity centres, no transfers are required. For further information regarding AAA or AAhockey, visit the APHA website atwww.aphamb.ca.

Rangers registration will be held onWednesday August 31st at the Roblin ParkCC - TIME 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

c4 house league (age 5-6)

Central Corydon Community Centre participates in an area association house league with sixother APHA (Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) community centres. Each of the communitycentres form teams based on their registration numbers. The season consists of 18-20 indoorgames starting in November and winding up in February. Teams will play 1-2 games per weekand will practice once or sometimes twice per week. The season finishes off with double knockout playoffs. The league is designed to focus on skill development and participation. Boys andgirls are welcome. The registration fees include an 8 session Initiation Program for allparticipants. New for 2011-12 is of course the amalgamation of the threecommunity centres of Crescentwood, River Heights & Sir John Franklin(Central Corydon Community Centre or C4). For the 1st time in ourhistory we will all be playing hockey together from our neighborhoodas we welcome the Crescentwood kids to the APHA. There will besome grandfathering allowed for older kids from Crescentwood whowish to continue playing with their friends in Fort Garry and moredetails will be available at fall registration in September. Also new forthis season the hockey program will be utilizing a $100 volunteerbond per family of which details will also be available at registration.

As a reminder, for traveling hockey, it is our goal at C4 and within theAPHA to have uniformity with respect to tryouts, team practices andice schedules. The APHA has adopted the Hockey Handbook as a guidefor ALL teams within the APHA to follow for players, coaches, managersand parents. The hockey handbook can be viewed on the APHA web-site www.aphamb.ca. Remember this is a reference guide, not gospel.

For team formations, every effort is made to ensure C4 and all clubs in the APHA follow a fair and equitable process. Remember you must register to tryout. If you choose to play in another program after the number of teams in each category has been formed, we will only refund half your money. This reason is simple; once the number of teams has been formed we are committed to those numbers so any drop in players is catastrophic.

The traveling program is "grass roots" hockey, where participation, fair play and competitiveness are always the goal. C4 shares thebelief of equal playing time, playing in a respectful manner andhaving fun. Parents should also be respectful of the enormousamount of time and energy our coaches/ managers dedicate both on& off the ice to run a successful team. If you haven't volunteered inthe past few years with a team please help out this year! Finally, as aretired AHL referee I would ask that everyone be mindful that the referees are young and developing and learning the game too. Without our current crop of returning referees we

would not be able to play any games. I trust that you will give them the respect and consideration they deserve. Let's play some hockey!

If your child does not want to try out for A1or A2 travelling hockey, declare the nexthighest level your child would like toparticipate at. Refer to the Hockey Handbookfor details regarding the try-out process.

ringetteWhat Is Ringette?

Ringette is a fast-paced team sportplayed on ice with a ring, stick and full

protective equipment. A game consistsof two 20-minute periods, taking an hour

to complete.

Try Ringette for free!A great way to see if Ringette is the sport for

you is to attend a Come Try Ringette event.Dates at www.cometryringette.com

What Makes Ringette Unique?Ringette encourages the rapid development ofskating skills, and demands that athletes applyconcepts of teamwork and game strategy tosucceed, in particular:

• Players must pass the ring over the blue line to a teammateevery time - promoting the involvement of all players.

• Skill, speed and strategy are what score goals - intentional andaggressive body contact is forbidden.

• Success depends on how well you and your teammates worktogether as only three players may attack or defend around thenet. Less crowding gives the skilled player space and reducesthe risk of injury.

• Only the goaltender is allowed in the crease. Featuring a biggercrease, scoring demands real skill.

• At the advanced levels, a team has 30 seconds from the timethey gain possession of the ring to take a shot on goal.

Who Plays Ringette?Originally invented to offer girls a team ice sport, Ringette hasdeveloped into a true Sport for Life, involving all participants of allages and both genders. In Manitoba, Ringette is played from the ageof 5 through to Senior Ladies and at all levels from House League toAA Elite Players who compete for national championships. There arealso five university teams in Manitoba. While the majority of Ringetteplayers are girls, boys are welcome up to age 12.

Team Formation Players at any age group may be based at anycommunity centre in our division, which is Assiniboine Park FortGarry Ringette Association (APFG).
