document.doc Following facilities should be provided for the Corrosive Liquids’ Storage area. These are as per good engineering practices. 1. Dyke / Containment wall (brick-masonry wall atleast 225 mm thick) around the tank(s) (it can be common for more than one tank if liquids stored are compatible with each other). a. Distance between tank edge / periphery and innerside of dyke wall should not be less than half of the height of the tank from the floor level b. Volume inside the dyke wall should be sufficient to hold contents of the largest (one) tank. c. The height of the dyke wall should not exceed 2 metres. d. Area inside the dyke including the walls should be covered with suitable, impervious Acid-proof / alkali-proof flooring. e. The wall should not have any openings. Openings for pipes to be filled up with cement. f. In one corner of the dyke, there should be drain pit with a valve opening outside the dyke. This valve should normally be in closed position. Its function is to remove any storm water accumulated inside. g. Pumps / electrical fittings should be located outside the dyke wall. 2. The Storage tank should have the following: a. Following should be prominently marked / painted on each Tank: i. Tag No. / Identification No. of the Tank. ii. Name of the Product with its concentration. iii. Maximum filling capacity. (Volume & Weight) b. Level Gauge / Indicator c. Overflow Nozzle with its outlet directed into a suitable container. 3. The area outside the dyke should have the following: a. Hard Stand for tanker with suitable acid-proof / alkali-proof flooring. b. Spillage control & disposal facilities. c. Personal Protective Equipment. d. Decontamination facilities like Shower / Eye-wash. 4. A notice-board containing the following should be prominently displayed: a. Hazards associated with the storage. b. Procedure & precautions for i. Safe Handling / Loading / Unloading of the liquid. ii. Use of Personal Protective Equipment. iii. Spillage containment / control and disposal. iv.
