TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

I would like to officially welcome all staff and students back to Corrimal High School for what is shaping up to be a fantastic year ahead. In particular, I would like to welcome all of our Year 7 students and their families as they embark on their high school journey. I would also like to welcome all new students in the other year groups.

I have been exceptionally impressed with how well the students have started the year. All teachers have commented on how settled their classes are, and how well the new Year 7 cohort have transitioned into the school. I would like to congratulate students on their efforts so far and encourage all students to maintain this positive approach to their learning. Their effort, behaviour and application to their learning will set them up for success throughout the year. I have also been impressed with the quality of the school uniform as students have returned to school. This is indicative of the positive change in the culture of our school and represents the pride that students have in the uniform and in the school.

I have outlined to staff and students our key focus areas for 2020. This year, our focus will be on CONSISTENCY & HIGH EXPECTATIONS. This applies to everything that we do every day at school, as well as every time that we represent Corrimal High School. Consistency and High Expectations start with me and go all the way to the last student in Year 7. I ask that all parents and families support the school in reinforcing these key focus areas at home and at school.

I have spoken to Year 11 & 12 students about the expectations for them surrounding their place in the school as senior role models for all other students, as well as the expectations that we have for them in relation to the completion and submission of assessment tasks. It is imperative that students take the responsibility to complete and submit all task to the best of their ability by the due date to ensure that they can maximise their opportunities for success. It is also advisable that where possible, students provide draft assessment responses to their teacher in order to gain feedback about progress, before implementing that feedback for their final submissions. This is invaluable in assisting students to achieve higher bands of achievement in the HSC.

In 2020, all schools have been provided with a set of targets that need to be achieved by 2022 to ensure that students are achieving to the standard they are capable of. The school executive has been meeting this term to discuss and plan for the first three targets which need to be locked in. These are:

Increasing the percentage of students in the top 2 bands for NAPLAN – Reading

Increasing the percentage of students in the top 2 bands for NAPLAN – Numeracy

Improved HSC attainment for Aboriginal Students in the HSC.

Our current and trend data indicates that as a school, we have done well to improve these results for Reading and Numeracy with the % of students in the top 2 bands for NAPLAN - Reading is in line with the State Average and our Numeracy results have been trending up for the past 2 years.

We are still in the process of setting up our Aboriginal Alternative Learning Centre, with plans in

place to advertise for this position through Term 1. This facility to be located in the school library will play an integral part in assisting the school to improve learning, social and cultural outcomes for all Aboriginal students.

Infrastructure and school improvement work has continued over the school holidays and into Term 1. Many of you will have noticed the removal of the barbed wire fencing on the Murray Road side of the school near the hall. This has opened up the front perspective of the school, making it look more aesthetically pleasing. This will be complemented over the next couple of weeks with the inclusion of four 22500 litre water tanks to collect water from the roof of the school hall. This will enable us to ensure that the front gardens and lawn can be maintained and appropriately watered year round.

There has been over 400 square metres of new concrete poured in the school quad, removing a number of areas of cracked and damaged concrete, in turn making the area safer for all staff, students and visitors to the school. In addition to this, the school Basketball Courts are currently undergoing a complete renovation. This includes:

New concrete base and the creation of two Basketball / Netball courts as well as a tennis court. This will include 4 new basketball / netball towers and new tennis posts and net.

These courts will also be painted.

There will be a brand new fence built around these courts replacing the existing fence which was damaged and rusty.

Unfortunately, the recent rain has delayed paint and fencing work commencing on the courts, however, the concrete has been poured and is ready for more work.

I have recently had a meeting with the Industrial Arts staff with representatives from our Asset Management unit, Public works and a team of architects. They have presented the first draft concept plan for the rebuild for the new Industrial Arts block. While there are still a number of steps that need to be completed, we are very excited about the proposal which was presented and are eagerly anticipating approval and sign off on the design so that a tender process can commence for the rebuild. I will keep the school community up to date as this progresses.

There will be information coming out shortly for the Year 3 – 6 Open night which will take place on Wednesday 11 March from 4:#0 – 6:30. We are looking forward to be able to showcase the amazing opportunities that Corrimal High School can provide for students in our community.

Also, on Wednesday 11 March, we will be holding a Parent information meeting for our new Year 7 parents. The focus of this meeting will be ‘Supporting the parents, to support the students. This will run from 6pm to 6:30pm and will be followed by an informal meet and greet with teachers of Year 7. If you are a new Year 7 parent, please save this date so that we can meet you and share with you some strategies to help you support your child.

I would like to congratulate the CHS ambassadors who assisted at the Bellambi / Corrimal Public School swimming carnival. All feedback received has been positive, highlighting how well our

students supported the event. Some comments from the Principals of Bellambi and Corrimal Public are listed below.

Good afternoon Paul,

Thank you so much for organising the high school students for our combined swimming carnival. They were very encouraging for our students and made the events run smoothly. – Michelle Sotiros – Principal Bellambi Public School

…the CHS students were fabulous and it certainly helped with the organisation. – Karen Vincenzini – Principal Corrimal Public School

A reminder that school photos are taking place next Tuesday 18 February. Please ensure that your child brings back their completed photo envelope and is in FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM.

I would also like to encourage parents to attend the first P & C meeting will take place next Tuesday 18 February commencing at 6pm in the Board Room located near the front office at the school. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to connect with other parents from the school, as well as play a part in the ongoing improvements at Corrimal High School.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

Welcome back to the beginning of what is shaping up to be a really positive year. We would like to start by congratulating students for settling back into school routine in a very positive manner. Welcome to our new year 7 students and new students across all year groups. Mr Allen, year 7 Year Advisor, has been doing a wonderful job transitioning year 7 into high school and we thank him for his efforts.

warnings to put phones away, non-compliance will result in phone confiscation for the day. If the student’s phone is confiscated on more than one occasion, parents will be asked to collect the device from the front office and consequences will be given.

Helmets - Students riding their bikes and scooters to school, must wear a helmet. No helmet and the bike is not allowed on school grounds. This is for the safety of our students.

Uniform - There are new jackets available for purchase. These jackets were chosen by the students. Jumpers and jackets that are not school uniform, are not allowed to be worn.

Social Media - Please also monitor your child’s social media use. I have attached some information from ‘REACHOUT.com’ about the benefits and risks of social media.

What are the benefits of social media for teenagers?

Being socially connected is very important for the psychological development of your child, and in this day and age, the online environment is where they get a lot of this. By connecting with others through social media, your child could:

develop better social skills

feel less isolated

learn about new cultural and societal ideas and issues

bond with their friends

have fun

be creative and share their own ideas with friends

be better equipped to be active citizens in society

develop real world skills to help them become more independent

learn about world events and current affairs outside of their immediate environment.

What are the risks of using social media?

Like any form of social engagement, social media comes with risks. Some of the most common risks include:

spending too much time online and being disconnected from the real world

being the victim of online bullying

damaging your online reputation

having your personal information shared online

being harassed or annoyed by someone you do not want attention from

being the victim of an online scam

having reduced self-esteem (for some teenagers).

WELLBEING

Welcome back everyone to the 2020 school year and welcome to our new Year 7 students and their families. We have had a settled start to the year and everyone is working hard to establish classroom routines and set the standard for student expectations for success.

At Corrimal High, we pride ourselves on our teaching and learning and also on our well-being programs and the way in which we know our students and cater for their needs. AS such, we have a number of programs underway and more in the pipeline. Throughout the newsletter you will read about the programs our school Chaplain is conducting and also the YAM (Youth Aware of Mental Health) program that is being run for Year 9. The YAM program is run by outside providers and after their first session last week they commented on how successful it was and how engaged our students were.

Regular school attendance is also integral to student success. It allows students to make and maintain their friendship groups. It also ensures students are up to date with classwork and assessment tasks and do not miss out on key information for their subjects. Just one day missed each week will add up to a whole term of learning missed by the end of the year. Year Advisers make phone calls home for students who are absent and are keen to assist families to reduce any barriers to attending school. We have a number of external agencies with which we link students and building that relationship with your child’s Year Adviser is important in achieving the best possible outcome for your child.

In my role as Head Teacher Well-Being, I support the Year Advisers with attendance and well-

being programs as well as co-ordinate the programs offered by external service providers. I meet with our Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) to interview students and collaborate with families to improve attendance. Please communicate any concerns you have or any assistance you need to your child’s Year Adviser and we will all ensure we are doing all we can to improve the situation.

CHAPLAIN

Mrs Begg, our school Chaplain, will be running two small groups this term. Each Monday period 1 in Room 13 (Learning Support room), Mrs Begg will meet up with a small group of girls to offer support through a program called “Girl Talk” for about 6 weeks. Topics that will be addressed include self worth, self talk, confidence, stress and relaxation. We are hoping this will be a fun and supportive time for the girls together. Mrs Begg will also be supporting the well-being of our new EALD students by meeting up with them each Monday period 3 to ensure they are settling well into Corrimal High. Students are welcome to ask any questions they would like and to bring up any issues that are concerning or worrying them. If you have any questions, please call the school to speak with Mrs Begg or Mrs Bourke (Head Teacher Well-Being).

TRANSITION

2020 is proving to be a fantastic year already and the transition team is busy working on the 2020 calendar. Activities and events will include transition days with our local CoS schools, sports refereeing programs and more. Students interested in upcoming opportunities should ensure they speak to the relevant staff coordinating programs. A reminder to all Year 7 students and our Year 11 Peer Support leaders that the upcoming Transition Camp is still open for final payments. Please ensure you return your notes and money to the front office.

KOORI CONNECTION The year has started off and we are already very busy planning for 2020 and beyond. Plans for the development and construction of our very own yarning circle are well underway and updates will be available shortly.

Our school has also purchased new jerseys for both the girl’s oztag/rugby league and netball. A big congratulations to Gemma Shepherd who has had her artwork used as the design for the netball dress design.

Amazing work.

Student access is restricted to videos that are appropriately rated for their particular age group, according to the Australian Classification Standards. If you wish to stream to your phone or tablet there is also a Clickview App (available for Android and iOS) that, once installed, behaves very much like Netflix or iView streaming services. If students are having difficulty accessing this resource, please see the Teacher Librarian, Miss Zalewski. Renaissance Reading Program 2020 The library has been busy getting resources ready for the Renaissance Reading Program. In 2020, Corrimal High School Year 8 students and the 7E class will be participating in the Renaissance Reading Program. The program is designed to encourage and improve students' reading skills. The program assesses students reading abilities and allows them to choose books from the library that are appropriate to their reading level and age, which will further develop their interest in reading. Students will then participate in online quizzes based on their selected texts to test their reading ability. Set periods of time will be given to students to read their books during classes and students will also undertake additional literacy activities and workshops to further develop their skills. We are looking forward to this exciting program and the results it will bring! Makerspace Our makerspace is here. We are excited for students and the wider school community to utilise the space to design, experiment and showcase the new equipment including Makey Makey’s, Edison Robots, Arduino’s, Lego, Strawbee’s and Creative Building Supplies. The Makerspace has been developed to reflect a hands on learning approach to creating with tools and technology. The idea is “about creating creative people” through the process of experimenting in a structured learning environment. We designed the Makerspace to encourage students to try technology that they wouldn't normally get exposure to and for those students who want to simply open up their creativity through quick and easy DIY projects. The Makerspace is available to use each day at Recess and Lunch and teacher guidance will be provided on Makerspace Mondays at Recess.
