This is one of those !-knew-you-when letters to express my admiration for your taking your new job, and my belief that you will do well in it.
As you can see by the above, somewhat over-expansive letterhead (my Egyptian honcho's idea, apparently believing I needed a more prestigious title to cut through governmental red-tape), even this old hand has departed Southeast Asia-after almost ten years there for The Times.
I can barely imagine the pressure you will face in the post-Watergate atmosphere. I had just a brief taste of it when, just out of a hospital in SanFrancisco, I acted as family spokesman when the Rusk's daughter !eggy married Guy Smith in 1967. That mixed marriage, incidentally, has worked out well.
I've been a bit more understan~ing with spokesmen for everybody ever since.

Dear Ron:
I would like the privilege of adding my voice to the chorus of well wishers to your appointment as Press Secretary for our President. We all hope and pray that it signals the beginning of the return of honesty, fairness and candor we had all expected from that great office, but have so often and so badly been disappointed and misled in the past.
I hope Mother has adjusted, as well as can be expected, to her loss and is living a full and rich life. Please tell her that all of us at the office have not forgotten her and wish her the best.
warmest and sincerest congratulations.
Very ours,

Dear Mr. Nessen:
333 Park View Drive Rural aoute 6 Post Office Box 536 Ivlanheim, Pen..YJ.sylvania 17 545
29 September 1974
On the occasion of your appointment, on 20 September ~974, as the Press Secretary to the President, I am pleased, therefore, to take this opportunity to convey to you my very sincere felicitations and best wishes.
The high standards of excellence and professionalism, so much in evidence during the years of your diversified association vrith the National Broadcasting Company, will, I hope, efficaciously distinguish your service, in the challenging days ahead, as the principal Presidential spokesman.
"I think my models in trying to do this job," you commented at the time of your appointment, "will be Bill iYJ:oyers for his knowledge and his honesty and the amount of information that he put out, Pierre Salinger for the good humor and the good fellov-1ship and the grace that he brought to this job, and I would hope to be able to earn as much respect from you as Jerry terHorst had."
If our political system is to function properly, the people must have confidence in those who wield pow-er and influence. The Press Secretary has the important job of reporting as fully and as accurately as possible the myriad activities and actions of the President, striving always to present the essential details with lucidity and veracity. The styles exemplified by several of your predecessors are indeed emulative. And in time, you, too, will put your own imprint on the White House Press Office. May you enjoy much success. May you exuerience the satisfaction of a job well done.
With cordial best wishes,
Sincerely yours,
~11/~ Richard M. Galbreath

Ron Nesson Presidential Press Secretary The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D. c. Dear Ron:
Just a brief note to wish you well in the new job. When I heard you were named I thought to myself, the President has made a good choice to replace Jerry TerHorst.
I know its a hot seat, and you've got to contend with that new, !or you, adversary relationship between your former colleagues and the interests or the Presidency.
I'm sure it'll be difficult as the Bill Moyers article in Newsweek suggests, but I'm equallY sure you're up to the challenge. And your former News colleagues here will be rooting for you.
Cheers,

Mr. Ron Nessen Press Secretary to the President The White House Washington, D. C.
By now you're already an old-timer on the job, but anyway - congratulations on the new position. This may sound like a stuck record, but it will be a relief to have the Press Office run as a press office again, instead of a censor bureau.
I've only been with the Geographic 20 years, so I can't speak for all time, but the only time in anybody' s memory that we had a complete breakdown in communication with the presidency was in the former administration.
In retrospect, I guess we were just lucky.
P. S. Regards to Sandy Eisert.

Dear Ron:
I'm not sure whether to offer my con~ratulations or
my condolences. Perhaps a bit or both. I am delighted
that you've taken the new job; !or I'm sure your presence
in the White House will help the President in his under-

views. At the same time I know Mr. Ford
is your boss, end he has his interests and alms, m1ch
don't always coincide with what the press wants. So you're
in the middle. I hope md am confident you'll be able to
stand up under the strain or being 1n the middle.
At any rate you have my best wishes, and l et it be
known that any time the President wants a speech or

give it the once ov~r.

Obviously, congratulations are in order and I couldn't be more pleased over your new position. Having worked with you in the past, I know the job will be done super-1 atively.
Many days have passed since we were together in Viet Nam and Korea. Certainly the 11firing line'' in Viet Nam was a good testing ground for the more lethal bombardments you must face every day in Washington.
I settled in Orlando and am currently vice president/branch manager of Colle & McVoy Advertising Agency, a Minneapolisbased organization. However, in the course of staffing up, I would appreciate your keeping me in mind. If you would ~ike to see a resume', I will be more than happy to send you one.
Looking forward to hearing from you, I remain

What are you doing in there with THEM when you're supposed to be out here with US?
I'm prepared to offer congratulations or commiserations~ whichever you choose to accept.
Is Dave Kennerly still shooting pictures around there for your office?
It's nice to see that the new administration has such good taste in hiring old comrades-at-arms.
I'm languishing along toward the end of a brief tour as the Unipress manager for ?'0 Million starving subcontinentals. Jfter 18 months of it I'm no longer able to say with any real feeling that it's better here than in Philadelphia.
But they are due to give me Southeast Asia around year's end and let me go back pome to God 1 s country, basing in Singapore.
Tony Clifton comes to see me once in awhile. Likewise Dan Southerland. Jack Foisie has gone off to live in Cairo. Horst Faas and I went up to cover the coronation of the new King of Bhutan a few months back.
Come see us one of these days. And if things go sour on the oth&r side of the fence you can always ieu Hoi.

Dear Ron,
September 23, 1974
It is always a pleasure for a teacher to observe the success of a former student. When the opportunity offered, I followed your news comments on N.B.C., although I must admit I did not know of the honor you received for your Vietnam reporting. Perhaps you may remember I once borrowed your paper on Hannibal Hamlin; this past winter I read a recent biography but failed to find much new light on the subject. Incidentally, have you always had a certain sympathy for Vice Presidents?
Now you have achieved a very important post with a President my husband and I admire (my husband, like President Fo~, IS'7n alumnus of the University of Michigan). \ In this new responsibility you have our very best wispes.

Congratulations on your recent appointment.
In June of 1973, when you were in Rock Island for Caren' s graduation, you and I had a very pleasant visit. At that time you made some predications which I did not think would come true however, time has proven that you were right and I was wrong.
Sharma, Tammie, and I wish you the best of luck in your new position. Also, we wish you continued health, happiness, and success.
Sincerely yours

Dear Cindy and Ron:
September 23, l97 4

We were an quite thrilled and excited to hear the news of Ron's appointment as Presidential Press Secretary. I had been kiddingly suggesting this might happen ever since we saw Ron interviewing President Ford outside of his house the night before the fateful resignation.
We an want to wish you the best of luck and success in your new job. We know that you witt handle thejob with a great deal of responsibility and witt continue to make us an as proud of you as we are now.
I think the proudest one in the house is Beth after having had such a pleasant visit with you last February.. I am taking Edie and the children to Washington for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Agents Convention in October. We will be arriving on October 18th and witt be leaving the morning of the 24th. We have already contacted your mother and we hope very much we will have the opportunity to meet Cindy and to possibly see you (we know how busy President Ford is going to keep you).
Again, an the luck i.n the world and may you have every success in this new job!
Sincerely,
