INSTRUMENTATION

PROGRAM NOTES

ROCK THE HALLS is a contemporary setting of the traditional carol Deck The Halls. Although this Welsh carol became very popular during the eighteenth century, its exact age is not known. The melody is light, fun and whimsical, much like the traditional lyrics. Composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart found great enjoyment in the frivolity of the melody, and borrowed it freely to create works for other instrumental settings.

Using American rock-’n’-roll to convey merry-making in a contemporary style, Robert W. Smith and Michael Story have crafted this arrangement for the young band. We invite you to clap along as we rock the hall!

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR

ROCK THE HALLS correlates with Unit 13 of Band Expressions, Book One. However, it was written to be performed by all beginning bands and to supplement any method book.

With the melody being so familiar to most student musicians, this arrangement allows the teacher to focus on the rock style. You may wish to lead the band in a stylistic discussion allowing them to discover and explore what makes this setting rock-’n’-roll.

The performance should be very enthusiastic. Please pay particular attention to the dynamics and articulation markings throughout. In addition, the opportunity to teach ensemble balance and communication is presented, as melodic statements in one section are answered with responses in another. As an option, you may wish to ask a student to prompt the audience to clap along.
