Every once- in- a-while, something happens in your life, that, when looking back, it just begs

reflection. It compels you to try and make peace with the universe, and to realize that by not fighting it, that we can sometimes unwittingly become elements of some grand choreography.

I had one such experience a couple of years back. It involved horses, cows, people, a buckle, and a back story that crept out of darkness to enlighten me.

I was on my first Father Junipero Serra Riders (Las Tortugas) Trek on the back 1000 acres of Camp Pendleton. This was the 40th consecutive ride for a group of cowboys originally all from San Juan Capistrano. It’s a weekend where over 100 guys can get together and be cowboys- camping out, riding trail, moving cows, eating chow, and throwing down a shot or two. You see, our super heroes growing up were on Gunsmoke, the Rifleman, The Lone Ranger, Maverick, and The Ponderosa. They were all men of character on horseback. They were the original “Fast and Furious.” I always wanted to be one. Thank goodness the Tortugas are a “don’t wanna be a dying breed.” I have had horses for 25 years, so it was nice to mingle with other like-minded cowboys and have the kind of play time that was mere make believe 40 or 50 years ago.

The first couple of days are filled with reunions, trail rides, honoring the fallen, great food and cool drinks. But all roads lead to Saturday for an afternoon of team cattle sorting with all teams wading in a huge wagering pool. Since it was my “first rodeo” the gamblers were not attracted to my team which only meant that we were long odds and we could buy ourselves and collect a handsome profit should we win. Even more important, the winning teams would be awarded silver buckles. Every cowboy wants to win a buckle. It means you have arrived…. At least

somewhere. The teams are placed in two divisions…Professional

for those who have won a buckle in the past; and Novice for people like me. Though I was Novice, my horse and I had some cow experience so we weren’t coming in from the dark.

Our first run we had a clean run of all 10 cows in 1 minute 30 seconds. No one else in our Division

had more than 4 cows, and most had been DQ’d in Round 1. A DQ can be costly, so our goal in the second run was to have a clean run with the number of cows dependent on how the other teams before us did. Well when a team with 4 cows got seven cows on their second run to give them 11 total, we determined we needed just two cows on our second run to capture the vaunted buckle, and the top money prize. One of my teammates felt he had this confirmed at the scorer’s table. We sorted the first two cows within 30 seconds, then just sat out the rest of the clock, being careful not to DQ. When time was up we quietly celebrated among us, thinking that the first place money and the buckles were ours! What we didn’t realize was that there was one MORE team to still complete their second run, and they also had 4 cows the first run. Well, they rose to the occasion, and sorted a clean run of 10 cows, for a total of 14, beating us by two cows. I could feel the buckle slipping through my fingers, as well as first place money which would have been $1200. We settled for second, and I was livid that we had received bad information, and could have probably won with just a little more effort.

The next morning I had mess hall duty. The head chef asked how I was doing, and I proceeded to bemoan my fate from the previous day, and explained how I was robbed of the silver buckle that I felt was rightfully mine. I whined and moaned, and shamelessly whined some more. The chef listened patiently, and finally asked if I was done. He then said, “You know my son was on the winning team and I am so happy for him. He wasn’t going to come this weekend. He had pretty much quit riding a few months ago. His horse which he had for 15

years from the age of 7 died suddenly… the victim of accidental poisoning. He was devastated, and said he never wanted to ride again.”

I swallowed hard. “What changed his mind?” I asked.

“I convinced him to come on a friend’s horse and told him if he didn’t feel anything special after the weekend, I wouldn’t bring it up again until he was ready. Well, something special happened.”

I never felt so petty about a competition. My winning a buckle paled in comparison to the victory a father and a son had that weekend. I suddenly understood the mixup at the arena the day before. And I was fine with it. I was honored to come in second behind that story.

But the story does not end there. We had all received “goodie” bags upon arrival to camp. I had not gone through it, but simply had thrown it in the bottom of my pack so as not to misplace it. When I unpacked at home on Sunday night, I pulled out the contents…. A hat, a coffee mug, a shot glass, binoculars… and then a flat rectangular box at the bottom. I opened it up to find a gleaming 40th Anniversary silver buckle.

It was like grace…. I didn’t earn it, and I didn’t deserve it. For this particular weekend, the universe proved that it is more than just.

See you on the trail!

Tips For a safe & successful Delivery* keep your hay elevated & ventilated. Storing your hay on pallets will help keep your hay from getting wet or moldy* keep your hay/feed room as clean as possible. When your hay runs low it’s a great time to move your pallets and sweep out bits of hay or feed that have (or could) become mouse & rodent housing. Remember that rodents are a tasty treat to snakes!* keep your strings under open hay bales so they can be re-tied up and moved when your new hay is delivered.* Remember to thank your delivery driver

We need to announce that beginning September 1st 2017, our membership dues

will be price adjusted. The Club has not had an increase in dues in over 20 years, and the current rate does not cover our National Membership dues and insurance- which has nearly doubled in cost just in the last three years.

While our club tries to be self-sustaining through various fundraisers which enlist a host of volunteer hours throughout the year, we need to be certain we are at least covering our commitment to National and be certain our own protection is in place. We do hope you continue to be a part of our Saddleback Canyon Riders family which we hope you value much more than the new dues listed below.

Child: $45Adult Single: $60Family (Husband and Spouse): $90 (plus $15 per child).

The saddleback Canyon riders are eTI Corral 7Established in 1991, we are one of the largest ETI corrals in California with members from South Orange County and points beyond. We are a family-friendly equestrian group based in Trabuco Canyon at the foot of the majestic Saddleback Mountains. Our Corral is committed to support-ing and helping maintain O’Neill Regional Park and other local riding trails.

eTI: equestrian Trails, Incorporated is a family oriented riding club es-tablished as a nonprofit corporation in 1944 with the Charter to be "Dedicated to the Ac-quisition and Preservation of Trails, Good Horsemanship, and Equine Legislation."With its combined membership, ETI has successfully worked to keep our trails open and add more equestrian facilities. The more members we have backing equine legislation and trail pres-ervation, the more likely the State, County and City Officials will be to comply with our needs.
