Second Collection This Weekend for Victims of Hurricane Harvey

Bishop Robert P. Deeley has authorized a special collection at all of Maine’s Catholic churches to provide aid and recovery support to victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. The money collected will be donated to Catholic Charities USA which is already providing immediate relief to those in need, regardless of faith affiliation, and will offer long-term recovery assistance in the months and years ahead.

Prayer of the Week

Receiving Is a Commitment

It is a wonderful mystery that in receiving the Body of Christ, we receive what we are. It is likewise a responsibility—to be that Body of Christ to others. It’s a challenge, a source of reflection, and a humbling thought. Think of what it means when we say, “Amen,” it is so, when the minister says, “Body of Christ.” It is a profession of faith and a promise.

As we approach in humility to receive Holy Communion, we recognize what we receive and who we are to become. We approach in reverence with a small bow. We then place one hand on top of the other, and say the “Amen” with conviction and energy. We reverently take the host with the other hand and place it in our mouths as nourishment for our spirits. Likewise we take the cup with both hands, drink slowly, and carefully return the cup to the minister. Our actions and spoken words show the importance of what we do.

Singing after Holy Communion

After communion, when we return to our pews, we have the opportunity to continue singing together, to reflect on our relationship with God, and through our baptism and communion, with one another. Our challenge is to act out that relationship when we leave the church building and throughout the week.

Post Communion Prayer

Finally, to conclude the liturgy of the Eucharist, there is the “post communion prayer.” This prayer gives thanks to God for God's gift to us of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament and prays that this Sacrament may be efficacious in our lives.

After the prayer, there is a final blessing, sometimes a more solemn (longer) one for special feasts and occasions. On occasion there is a longer prayer, called the “prayer over the people.” These prepare us to go out into the world with God’s blessing. Copyright © 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me Body of Christ, save me

Blood of Christ, inebriate me Water from Christ’s side, wash me Passion of Christ, strengthen me

O good Jesus, hear me Within Thy wounds hide me

Suffer me not to be separated from Thee From the malicious enemy defend me

In the hour of my death call me and bid me come unto Thee

that I may praise Thee with Thy saints and with Thy angels

forever and ever. Amen.

Saint Joseph of Copertino

On September 18th the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Joseph of Copertino. Joseph Desa was born at Copertino, Italy in 1603. He was taken into religious life by Franciscan conventual friars at Grotella in 1625, and in 1628 he was ordained a priest. The intense desire for union with Christ manifested itself in ecstatic moments and episodes of levitation that aroused suspicions in the Inquisition. The Holy Office tried him in 1634 and in the end declared him innocent. He died at Osimo in the Marches in 1663 and was canonized by Pope Clement XIII in 1767. St. Joseph of Copertino is the patron of aviators and astronauts, students and test takers, and those suffering from mental challenges.

Catholic Funeral F.A.Q. Organ Donation

Over the years, the waiting list for organs has consistently exceeded the number of organs donated. Organs for transplantation come from both living and deceased donors.

Catholic teaching holds that organ donation is a generous and noble act as long as adequate moral criteria are met, including free and informed consent and the preservation of bodily integrity in the case of a living donor.

Pope Saint John Paul II described organ donation as a particularly praiseworthy example of everyday heroism if “performed in an ethically acceptable manner, with a view to offering a chance of health and even of life itself to the sick who sometimes have no other hope.”

Particularly important for donation after death is that the donor is properly declared dead, either by cardiopulmonary or neurological criteria. In order for the determination of death by neurological criteria to be morally acceptable, there must be rigorous testing that confirms the entire brain has irreversibly ceased to function.
