THE CHOSEN REMNANT
Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This im-age of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity.
Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of them-selves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have.
Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holi-ness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 29, 2017
Perpetual Adoration at Corpus Christi
We try to provide an atmosphere of qui-et reflection in the Chapel. We invite
everyone to pray silently before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament when you come for a visit.
We thank all Guardians of the Eucharist for their love, fidelity, and commitment to Jesus in the Eucharist. We encourage you to get to know the guardians before and after you. Please try to be on time for your hour. The person be-fore you may have another commitment and is counting on you to be on time.
ANNUAL VOTIVE CANDLES
Lighting candles is an honored tradition here at Corpus Christi and is really a much welcomed form of prayer. Votive or Vigil lights signify pray-er to God or one of the Saints on behalf of some-one, an intention, or our prayer for a deceased loved one, or ourselves. The candle keeps vigil, or watch, and continues day and night as a symbol of our ongoing prayer for the intention or the person.
Many people light a candle every week, but don’t always get around to it for whatever reason. If that someone is you, you may wish to consider participating in the Corpus Christi Annual Votive Candle Program.
A donation of $100 will ensure that a Votive Candle will burn daily in Corpus Christi Church for 52 week to memorialize your intention. Dona-tions can be made at anytime during the year at the Rectory office.
