Sincerely In Christ,
Fr. Lawrence D’Anjou
From Father Lawrence
I have extended an invitation to Rev.
Martin Holler and Msgr. Adolfo Valdivia
Aguirre to come to our parish on the
weekend of June 11-12th, 2016. Father
Martin Holler and Monsignor Valdivia
Aguirre will speak to you about the
work being done by Unbound
(previously known as CFCA), and how
this provides a trustworthy way to
actively participate in the social
outreach of the Catholic Church and
answer the Gospel call to serve the
poor.
Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is
an organization that has served more
than 600,000 children, youth and
elderly in 20 developing countries since
1981 - empowering them to make more
choices in their lives, live with dignity
and reach their potential.
Unbound’s unique sponsorship program
is highly personalized. It matches a
child, youth, or aging person at a
project overseas with a sponsor in the
U.S. who cares about and encourages
that person. With a monthly
contribution, a sponsor helps to provide
much –needed nourishing food, medical
and dental care, the chance for a child
to go to school, livelihood programs for
families and much more. All of these
efforts are directed at affirming the
dignity of every person in their local
community.
Please join me in welcoming Father
Martin Holler and Monsignor Valdivia
Aguirre to our Parish.
This weekend the Church celebrates
the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body
and Blood of Christ. The Body and
Blood of Christ in the Eucharist is the
perpetual gift of Jesus' Real Presence
until the parousia - the great day when
Jesus comes in glory to judge the living
and the dead. This gift of Jesus to His
Church was a supreme act of mercy;
physically giving us his divine presence
to nourish and accompany us during
our days on earth.
The mission of our earthly days should
be a participation in the works of Jesus
which we define as the corporal and
spiritual works of mercy. Coming in
two weeks, you'll have the opportunity
to engage in both corporal and spiritual
works of mercy with Unbound
ministries. Please see the information
to the right about Unbound.
I hope you'll give some prayerful
thought to becoming an Unbound
sponsor. I have been blessed over the
years to sponsor several children
through Unbound. We exchange letters
about our lives, and once I was able to
visit two of them in Guatemala through
an Unbound mission trip. What a
blessed time that was!
If you or your family have young
children, Unbound is a wonderful way
to help expand their world to include a
needy young person somewhere in the
world. Unbound is a great way to
"teach your children well" how to
participate in the mercy of God.

Three months after coming to America, Cha May Hto’o, who is the father of our adopted Burmese family, found a job in the Hayward area.
Cha May Hto’o is happy to be employed, and he works a 40-hour weeks. He has already made acquaintances, carpooling to work with other former Burmese refugees. His manager at work was also a refugee from Burma. Cha May Hto’o has found a place with
people with whom he can transition nicely.
After attending a short course on English as a Second Language (ESL), it is encouraging to hear Cha May use a few useful greetings in English. Arrangements are being made to get private tutoring from a parish volunteer that will help Cha May achieve proficiency in English.

Scripture Reflections
First Reading Genesis 14:18-20 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 110:1-4 Second Reading 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Gospel Reading Luke 9:11b-17 Background on the Gospel Reading Today, the second Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate a second solemnity, which marks our return to Ordinary Time. Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. At one time, this day was called Corpus Christi, Latin for “the Body of Christ.” In the most recent revision of the liturgy, the name for this day is expanded to be a more complete reflection of our Eucharistic theology. The feeding of the 5,000 is the only one of Jesus' miracles to appear in all four Gospels. Luke places it between Herod's question, “Who is this about whom I hear such things?” and Peter's response to Jesus' question about who he thought Jesus was: “You are the Messiah of God.”
In Luke the feeding is not the result of Jesus' compassion for the crowd but is instigated by the disciples. They wanted Jesus to send the crowd away to town. Instead Jesus tells the disciples to give them some food on their own. The passage is meant to remind us of two feedings in the Old Testament: the feeding of the Israelites in the desert and Elisha's feeding of 100 people with 20 loaves in 2 Kings 4:42-44. It is also connected to the institution of the Eucharist. As in the Last Supper accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke and in Paul's account in 1 Corinthians 11:23-24, Jesus takes bread, looks up to heaven, blesses the bread, breaks it, and then gives it to the disciples. In using this exact language, Luke is reminding his readers that in this miracle Jesus is doing more than feeding hungry people as God did for the Israelites and the prophet Elisha did as well. The bread he gives is his body, which he will continue to give as often as the community breaks bread in remembrance of him in the Eucharist.
Treasures from our Traditions
Once the early Christians realized that Christ 's coming in glory was delayed , there was a need to provide for the governance and everyday needs of the church. The various "orders" within the church carried forward the apostles ' ministry, but also allowed for a measure of creativity . The sacrament we call "holy orders" evolved somewhat slowly. At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms they knew, adapting them
to new situations . Synagogues , for example, were administered by a board of "elders," translated into Greek as presbyteros. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a normal feature of church life from earliest days. They stood in relationship to another order, that of "overseers," translated into Greek as episkopos, giving us the English "bishops." The bishop was the shepherd, the faithful tender of the flock, one who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins, and maintained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons were the chief advisers for the charitable life of the church, so were the presbyters meant to advise the bishop on the spiritual life of the faithful. They were trusted advisers at first, not pastors or priests as we understand those terms today.
