SHUTDOWN: Nick Martinez slammed the door on Corpus Christi thru the final seven frames last night as Frisco rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Hooks. Corpus Christi managed a run against rehabbing Texas Ranger Nick Tepesch in the first. A two-out RBI double by Erik Castro over the head of left-fielder Teodoro Martinez accounted for the damage. Tepesch allowed a walk and an infield hit to begin the third. Martinez, making his fourth Double-A appearance, entered from the bullpen and induced a fly ball from Preston Tucker for the first out. Castro then walked to load the bases for Jonathan Meyer who bounced into a 5-4-3 dou-ble play. Following that pivotal twin-killing, Martinez recorded the next 18 outs in consecutive fashion. He struck out six. Martinez’ gem spoiled a solid start by Hooks lefty David Rollins. He held the RoughRiders to three hits thru the first four innings. With one away in the fifth, Ryan Rua belted a home run to left-center. A two-out walk by Ryan Strausborger kept the frame going. Singles from Luis Sardinas and Rougned Odor, and a Luis Alvarez passed ball pushed Frisco ahead 3-1.

SANTANA ACTIVE: OF Domingo Santana has been activated from the disabled list today. Santana, who’s batting .247 with 22 doubles, 22 home runs and 58 RBIs in 106 contests, was sidelined on August 18 in Arkansas due to a hamstring injury. The 21-year-old out of Santo Domingo has hit safely in 18 of his last 23 games, batting .302 with 8 home runs and 16 RBIs. Santa-na’s 22 bombs are tied for 5th in the Texas League while his homer-to-at-bat ratio of 1/18.00 ranks 4th. To make room on Corpus Christi’s roster, LHP Alex Sogard has been placed on the disabled list. Sogard was hit in the left el-bow by a line drive off the bat of Beau Taylor in the 9th inning of Friday’s series finale vs. Midland. Sogard owns a 3.22 ERA in 15 appearances for the Hooks, going 3-for-4 in save chances. The move is retroactive to August 24 MOUND WORK: Ryan Rua’s home run in the fifth last night snapped of string of 21 scoreless innings tossed by Corpus Chris-ti’s pitching staff. The Hooks have won 6 of their last 9 games and their starting staff has posted a 3.14 ERA during this stretch, striking out 53 against 14 walks in 51.2 innings. Over the last 12 contests, Corpus Christi’s relief corps is 5-0 with 3 saves and a 1.49 ERA (7 ER / 42.1 IP), striking out 28 against 6 walks. FALL BALL: The Arizona Fall League rosters were announced yesterday and 6 members of Corpus Christi’s ball club are bound for the desert. Pitchers Jonas Dufek, Matt Heidenreich, Andrew Robinson and Alex Sogard (LH) and third baseman Jon-athan Meyer will suit up for the Peoria Javelinas. Hooks athletic trainer Bryan Baca has also been tabbed to represent the As-tros. Houston prospects Nolan Fontana and Delino DeShields are included on the Peoria roster, in addition to 1B/DH Japhet Amador who was recently acquired by the Astros from Mexico City. This proving ground for prospects opens October 8. BIG & BRIGHT: Former Hooks George Springer and David Martinez earned Texas League Player and Pitcher of the Year honors, league president Tom Kayser announced Tuesday. Pitching coach Gary Ruby was named the Mike Coolbaugh Coach of the Year, awarded to the league’s top assistant. Right-handed pitcher Mike Foltynewicz, third baseman Jonathan Meyer and catcher Max Stassi joined Martinez and Springer on the TL Post-Season All-Star Team. Springer, who entered 2013 as Baseball America’s No. 3 Astros prospect, earned the league’s Player of the Year award de-spite playing just the first half of the season with Corpus Christi. In 73 games, Houston’s 2011 first-round draft pick hit .297 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. At the time of his promotion to Triple-A, Springer led or shared the Texas League lead in home runs, runs (56), total bases (158) and slugging percentage (.579). With Oklahoma City he has been even better, hitting .307 with 18 home runs, 50 RBIs and 20 steals, while he pursues the first 40-40 season in Minor League Baseball since 1956. Martinez arrived in Corpus Christi as a less heralded prospect than Springer, but turned into the league’s most dominant pitch-er. In 26 games with the Hooks, 18 starts, he went 14-2 with a 2.02 ERA and one save. Martinez walked 20 and struck out 86 in 129.1 innings pitched. He allowed more than three runs in an appearance just once. After a promotion to Oklahoma City August 8, Martinez still paces the circuit in victories, earned run average, WHIP (1.00) and winning percentage (.875). The right-hander from Venezuela made two appearances for Oklahoma City before he made his big league debut August 21 at Texas. In his second season as Corpus Christi pitching coach, Ruby has led Hooks hurlers to a 3.72 team earned run average, fourth in the Texas League. The club’s 14 shutouts lead the league and its four complete games are tied for first. HUNT FOR 82: The Hooks are 2 wins away from establishing a new club record. Last year’s Texas League South Second Half Championship squad set the standard, finishing the campaign with an 81-59 record. TOAST OF TIJUANA: Houston’s newly-acquired Mexican League outfielder, Leo Heras, is 7-for-20 (.350) with 3 runs, 2 dou-bles, a triple, home run, 5 RBIs and 4 walks in 5 games as a Hook. A native of Tijuana, Heras was hitting .310 with 11 home runs, 42 RBIs and a .591 slugging percentage in 91 games for the Diablos Rojos. The 23-year-old posted a career-high 24 home runs and 64 RBIs over 112 contests with Mexico City last year. Heras features a .318 batting average with 109 doubles, 50 triples, 60 home runs, 294 RBIs and 89 stolen bases in 595 games over 7 seasons south of the border. ALVAREZ JOINS CC: C Luis Alvarez is 1-for-5 with a strikeout in 2 games with the Hooks. Alvarez had played in only 33 games prior to joining Corpus Christi. The 23-year-old from Venezuela went 6-for-23 (.261) with Lancaster, belting 3 home runs while driving in 9. Adding in his time with Tri-City and Quad Cities, Alvarez is batting .290 with 16 runs, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 16 RBIs.
