Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Making the Gospel Message Relevant to Our Children

If we want our children to truly love and become part of the faith, we must find ways to make it

relevant to them from an early age. Director of Re-ligious Education, Roseanne Williby, says this is what the parish’s Children’s Liturgy of the Word aims to do by creatively communicating the Sun-day readings to children in a way that is meaning-ful to them.

“It’s intended to make relevant to the lives of the young children an understanding of the Gos-pel message — to allow them to participate more actively in the liturgy at their own level,” Rose-anne says.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is currently available every Sunday during the 9:30 a.m. Holy Family Mass for children ages 4-8. It’s also offered periodically during the 11:15 a.m. Mass at Corpus Chris-ti depending on volunteer avail-ability. Dismissed just before the first reading, children are able to listen to the Scriptural readings

A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

A Steward’s Response to the Ultimate Christmas Gift

Don’t get me wrong — I certainly love Christmas. But during this month, I’m

afraid that many of us somehow miss the main reason for our Christmas celebrations.

Sometimes people say things like, “Get-ting everything ready for Christmas becomes so hectic, I don’t want to do it every year. But, you know, Christmas is really for the children.” And occasionally, I’ve heard or read in a letter to the editor that Christmas is about the hope that a newborn baby brings to the world. Even in the early winter, when the days are short, we can celebrate babyhood, a new human life.

Both those sentiments are wrong because they’re too limited. Of course, it’s true that many of our Christmas customs are for the children — we might not get to hang our stockings to be filled by San-ta Claus otherwise. And it’s true that the birth of a baby, any baby, brings joy and hope to all those around. Yes, many of our Christmas celebrations are centered on the children, and the birth of a child offers a promise for the future.

At Christmas, we celebrate not just any baby, but a particular baby. We celebrate this birth be-cause of Who this baby is and what He did as an adult, for all of us.

A human baby is certainly a wonderful creation, made in the image of God. But Jesus is more than that, not less, for He is God the Son who took on hu-man nature in order to redeem us from the results of the sin into which we had fallen. He didn’t stay a baby. He grew up and taught and preached and healed. That’s why we celebrate His birth more than 2,000 years later.

In response to the gift the Father gave us with the birth of His Son, we joyfully exchange gifts with each other, share with the poor, and offer our gifts of time, talent and treasure to the Church. God gives to us — and as stewards, we must do our best to faithfully use those gifts.

La Respuesta de la Corresponsabilidad como

el Mejor Regalo de Navidad

No me malinterpreten, ciertamente amo la Navidad. Pero durante este mes, me temo

que muchos de nosotros de alguna manera extrañamos la razón principal de nuestras ce-lebraciones navideñas.

A veces la gente dice cosas como: “Preparar todo para la Navidad se vuelve tan agitado que no quiero hacerlo todos los años. Pero, ya sa-ben, la Navidad es realmente para los niños “.

Y ocasionalmente, escuché o leí en una carta al editor que la Navidad es sobre la esperanza que un bebé re-cién nacido trae al mundo. Incluso a principios de in-vierno, cuando los días son cortos, podemos celebrar la infancia, que es una nueva vida humana.

Ambos sentimientos están equivocados porque son demasiado limitados. Por supuesto, es cierto que mu-chas de nuestras costumbres navideñas son para los niños; de lo contrario, no podríamos colgar nuestros calcetines para santa. Y es cierto que el nacimiento de un bebé, cualquier bebé, trae alegría y esperanza a todos los que lo rodean. Sí, muchas de nuestras cele-braciones navideñas se centran en los niños, y el naci-miento de un niño ofrece una promesa para el futuro.

En Navidad, celebramos no solo a cualquier bebé, sino a un bebé en particular. Celebramos este na-cimiento por quién es este Bebé y lo que hizo como adulto, para todos nosotros.

Un bebé humano es ciertamente una creación maravillosa, hecha a imagen de Dios. Pero Jesús es más que eso, no menos, porque Él es Dios el Hijo que asumió la naturaleza humana para redimirnos de los resultados del pecado en el que habíamos caído. No se quedó bebé. Creció y enseñó, predicó y curó. Es por eso que celebramos Su nacimiento más de 2,000 años después.

En respuesta al regalo que el Padre nos dio con el nacimiento de Su Hijo, intercambiamos regalos con alegría, compartimos con los pobres y ofrecemos nues-tros regalos de tiempo, talento y tesoro a la Iglesia. Dios nos da, y como corresponsales, debemos hacer todo lo posible para usar fielmente esos dones.

Corpus Christi Advent CelebrationBrings Parishioners Together

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Christ-mas preparations surrounding the Advent

season, Corpus Christi offers a wonderful op-portunity for parishioners to take a moment out of their busy schedules and enjoy some fun, food and fellowship with our faith community. The second annual Advent Celebration will take place immediately following the four o’clock Mass on Dec. 14.

this event — Denise Wieler, Donna Lear, Linda Hunter and Maureen Kruse — are excited to be organizing another fun party for Corpus Christi.

“Last year’s Christmas party was a huge suc-cess,” Denise says. “We had the hall set up for 200 people, and had to take down the wall to let people sit in the adjoining room as well. We prob-ably had about 250 people. We were shocked.”

With about 300 parishioners expected to attend this year’s party, the coordinators are grateful for the generosity of many parish min-istries and individuals who make it all possible. Thanks to these donations, the parish is able to host a wonderful evening for adults and chil-dren alike.

“We provide food, a priest plays the violin for us, and we are able to give out presents,” Denise says. “We call different groups in the parish and ask if they can donate toys or any of the other things we need. Last year, it was overwhelming — people just started dropping things off. It was truly a Christmas miracle!”

To this day, many people still mention last year’s Advent Celebration when they are asked what they love most about Corpus Christi. We hope everyone will consider coming out to enjoy this special time with their fellow parishioners on Dec. 14!

La Celebración del Adviento del Corpus Christi une a los Feligreses

En medio del ajetreo y el bu-llicio de los preparativos na-

videños que rodean la tempora-da de Adviento, Corpus Christi ofrece una maravillosa oportu-nidad para que los feligreses se tomen un momento de su apre-tada agenda y disfruten de la di-versión, la comida y el compa-ñerismo con nuestra comunidad de fe. La segunda celebración anual de Adviento tendrá lugar inmediatamente después de la misa de las cuatro en punto el 14 de diciembre.

El equipo de cuatro feligre-ses que coordinan este evento - Denise Wieler, Donna Lear, Linda Hunter y Maureen Kruse - están entusiasmados de orga-nizar otra fiesta divertida para Corpus Christi.

“La fiesta de Navidad del año pasado fue un gran éxito,” dice Denise. “Teníamos el salón pre-parado para 200 personas, y tu-vimos que derribar el muro para permitir que las personas se sentaran también en la sala con-tigua. Probablemente tuvimos unas 250 personas. Nos queda-mos impactados.”

Con alrededor de 300 feligre-ses que asistirán a la fiesta de este año, los coordinadores están agradecidos por la generosidad de muchos ministerios parro-quiales e individuos que lo hacen posible. Gracias a estas donacio-nes, la parroquia puede organi-zar una maravillosa velada para adultos y niños por igual.

The Blessings of the Catholic Mass

It is ironic that today, with all of the freedom of religion that we

enjoy in the United States, many of us wonder why we must go to Mass on Sunday.

However, if we really under-stood what the Mass is and how we participate in the celebration, we would instead be asking why we are, as sinful human beings, blessed with the opportunity to participate in the holy Mass.

The sacrifice of Christ on the cross is literally re-presented to the Father during Mass, and Christ allows us to join with Him in offering that sacrifice. Imagine our Lord and Savior dying on the cross for us right up the street. Imagine knowing that Mary is sit-ting at the foot of the cross with

St. John, witnessing her Son giv-ing Himself to the Father for the sake of all of us. Believe it or not, the sacrifice of Calvary is really, truly happening at our parish, every time the Mass is offered.

Our participation in Mass gives us the strength and the graces we need to live our lives as Christ’s disciples. We also have a chance to join in Jesus’ sacrifice by offering our own prayers and petitions. As an ex-ample, what better gift could we give deceased loved ones than the offering of prayers for their souls in purgatory?

Most importantly, we have the opportunity to receive the Eucharist, followed by quiet time, when we offer sincere thanks and

allow God’s graces to fill us. Think of all you are missing when you do not properly prepare yourself to receive the Holy Eucharist. Af-ter all, as expressed by St. Au-gustine, “behold what you are, become what we receive” — just as the bread and wine become Christ, so, too, are we when we receive the Eucharist.

Attending and actively par-ticipating in Mass every Sunday is our obligation as Catholics. Our ability to participate in the Mass is a wonderful gift, not a great burden. May Christ en-lighten our minds and hearts to clearly see the wonders of the celebration, and give us great enthusiasm and eagerness to participate.

Las Bendiciones de la Misa Católica

Es irónico que hoy, con toda la libertad de religión que disfrutamos en los Estados Unidos, muchos

de nosotros nos preguntamos por qué debemos ir a misa el domingo.

Sin embargo, si realmente entendiéramos qué es la Misa y cómo participamos en la celebración, esta-ríamos preguntando por qué somos, como seres hu-manos pecaminosos, bendecidos con la oportunidad de participar en la Santa Misa.

El sacrificio de Cristo en la cruz se presenta lite-ralmente al Padre durante la Misa, y Cristo nos per-mite unirnos a Él para ofrecer ese sacrificio. Imagina a nuestro Señor y Salvador muriendo en la cruz por nosotros en la calle. Imagínese saber que María está sentada al pie de la cruz con San Juan, presenciando a su Hijo entregándose al Padre por el bien de todos nosotros. Lo creas o no, el sacrificio del Calvario está ocurriendo realmente en nuestra parroquia cada vez que se ofrece la Misa.

Nuestra participación en la misa nos da la fuerza y las gracias que necesitamos para vivir nuestras vi-das como discípulos de Cristo. También tenemos la oportunidad de unirnos al sacrificio de Jesús al ofre-cer nuestras propias oraciones y peticiones. Como ejemplo, ¿qué mejor regalo podríamos dar a los seres queridos fallecidos que ofrecer oraciones por sus al-mas en el purgatorio?

Lo más importante es que tenemos la oportuni-dad de recibir la Eucaristía, seguida de un momento de tranquilidad, cuando ofrecemos sinceros agrade-cimientos y permitimos que las gracias de Dios nos llenen. Piensa en todo lo que te falta cuando no te pre-paras adecuadamente para recibir la Sagrada Euca-ristía. Después de todo, como lo expresó San Agustín, “mira lo que eres, conviértete en lo que recibimos”, así como el pan y el vino se convierten en Cristo, también lo somos nosotros cuando recibimos la Eucaristía.

Asistir y participar activamente en misa todos los domingos es nuestra obligación como católicos. Nues-tra capacidad de participar en la Misa es un regalo maravilloso, no una carga. Que Cristo ilumine nues-tras mentes y corazones para ver claramente las ma-ravillas de la celebración, y nos de gran entusiasmo y ganas de participar.

Doing this effectively, however, requires committed volunteers who are willing to share their love of the Lord with our young-est parishioners.

“We’re always in need of additional vol-unteers for this ministry,” Roseanne says. “It doesn’t require a huge commitment and is a beautiful way to serve our parish’s little ones.”
