Embracing a Season of New Growth and Opportunities in the

New Year

The new year pres-ents each of us with a

unique opportunity for both hindsight and foresight. It’s a time to reflect upon the highs and lows of the past while also moving for-ward with a renewed sense of hope and vision. This is true not only in our personal lives but also in our communal lives. That’s why at the start of 2020, Fr. Tom Thakadipuram hopes to further unite our Cor-pus Christi community by fostering an overall spirit of engagement and evangelization.

“The start of a new year provides us all with a beautiful opportunity to leave behind some of our past things in order to embrace something new,” Fr. Tom says. “This is often necessary for growth. And so our hope this year is to create a greater unifica-tion amongst our parishioners and ministries — to bring everyone together under the Corpus Christi banner so that we can really strengthen one an-other and continue to grow as a community.”

Fr. Tom points out that the words Corpus Chris-ti are Latin for “the Body of Christ.” This is par-ticularly fitting for our faith community because, as Christians, our number one goal is always to become more like Christ.

ranza y visión. Esto es cierto no solo en nuestra vida personal, sino también en nuestra vida comunitaria. Por eso, a principios de 2020, el p. Tom Thakadipu-ram espera unir aún más a nuestra comunidad de Corpus Christi fomentando un espíritu general de compromiso y evangelización.

“El comienzo de un nuevo año nos brinda a to-dos una hermosa oportunidad de dejar atrás algunas de nuestras cosas pasadas para abrazar algo nuevo,” Tom dice. “Esto a menudo es necesario para el cre-cimiento. Y así, nuestra esperanza este año es crear una mayor unificación entre nuestros feligreses y mi-nisterios, unir a todos bajo el estandarte del Corpus Christi para que podamos fortalecernos mutuamente y seguir creciendo como comunidad.”

Taste of Italy Dinner Offers

an Enjoyable and Relaxing Evening

with FriendsWith all of the bustle of Thanksgiving,

Christmas and the New Year behind us, now is a great time to sit down with friends, relax, and enjoy a delicious Italian meal at our parish’s Taste of Italy Dinner.

Italian food and wine are on the menu for the dinner, which is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Corpus Christi Our Lady of Cart-er Lake location. Tickets for the event are $20, and are available for purchase after the Masses at Carter Lake, as well as at the parish office.

Lori Poldberg, Diane Storey, and Bob and Jackie Wahl have given of their time and talents organizing the dinner — a role they all have had for more than two years.

The evening includes an appetizer, dinner and dessert. This will feature three wines and complimentary wine, as well. Door prizes are also included in the ticket price.

“It is a fun, laid-back event where everyone sits and enjoys an Italian meal and wine in a quaint Italian setting,” Lori says.

Nuevo a nuestras espaldas, ahora es un buen momento para sentarse con amigos, relajarse y disfrutar de una deliciosa comida italiana en la cena Taste of Italy de nuestra parroquia.

A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Start a New Life, Not Just a New Year

It’s January — that means it’s time for New Year’s resolutions. Often,

New Year’s resolutions are intended simply to undo the harm we did to ourselves by overindulging in food and drink between Thanksgiv-ing and the end of the year. Some resolutions are changes we know we should make, but aren’t really committed to making — thus, they don’t last very long.

So, looking at this in broader terms, when should we make a resolution to eliminate a sin-ful practice from our life? That question has a simple answer — the moment we realize we’re engaging in a sinful practice. In other words, as soon as we realize we’re doing something wrong, we should stop.

Now, I admit that making the changes we need in order to grow closer to Christ is easier said than done. All too often, we fool ourselves into thinking we can make all the changes we need under our own strength and on a convenient timetable. For real change, we need guidance and we need help – a new life, in fact. St. Paul addressed this when he wrote to the Romans (6:4), “We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in new-ness of life.”

In other words, we need a new life, not a new year. We find this new life in union with Christ within His Body, the Church. The Church can provide you with guidance. She has 2,000 years of accumulated wisdom and experience, begin-ning with God’s own revelation. The Ten Com-mandments provide a brief, incisive outline for ethical behavior. Help comes from God’s grace, available to us in the sacraments and through prayer.

With God’s grace and guidance, lived in union with the Church, we find that “in newness of life” we can “cease being indifferent” and “learn to do good.” That’s a resolution worth making.

UNA CARTA DE NUESTRO PASTOR

Comience una Nueva Vida, no Solo un Nuevo Año

Es enero, eso significa que es hora de las re-soluciones de Año Nuevo. A menudo, las re-

soluciones de Año Nuevo tienen la intención sim-plemente de deshacer el daño que nos hicimos a nosotros mismos al consumir en exceso alimen-tos y bebidas entre el Día de Acción de Gracias y el fin de año. Algunas resoluciones son cambios que sabemos que deberíamos hacer, pero no estamos realmente comprometidos a hacerlo, por lo tanto, no duran mucho.

Entonces, mirando esto en términos más am-plios, ¿cuándo debemos tomar una resolución

para eliminar una práctica pecaminosa de nuestra vida? Esa pregunta tiene una respuesta simple: en el momento en que nos damos cuenta de que estamos participando en una práctica pecaminosa. En otras palabras, tan pronto como nos demos cuenta de que estamos haciendo algo mal, deberíamos parar.

Ahora, admito que hacer los cambios que necesita-mos para acercarnos a Cristo es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. Con demasiada frecuencia, nos engañamos pensando que podemos hacer todos los cambios que necesitamos por nuestra propia fuerza y en un ho-rario conveniente. Para un cambio real, necesitamos orientación y ayuda: una nueva vida, de hecho. San Pablo se dirigió a esto cuando escribió a los romanos (6: 4): “De hecho, fuimos sepultados con él a través del bautismo, de modo que, así como Cristo resucitó de la muerte por la gloria del Padre, nosotros también podríamos vivir en la nueva vida “.

En otras palabras, necesitamos una nueva vida, no un nuevo año. Encontramos esta nueva vida en unión con Cristo dentro de Su Cuerpo, la Iglesia. La Iglesia puede brindarnos orientación. Ella tiene 2,000 años de sabiduría y experiencia acumuladas, comenzando con la propia revelación de Dios. Los Diez Mandamien-tos proporcionan un breve resumen incisivo para el comportamiento ético. La ayuda proviene de la gracia de Dios, disponible para nosotros en los sacramentos y a través de la oración.

A LEAP OF FAITH: Parishioners Andrew and Crystal Fetter View Their Sports Ministry as a Calling

Athletics might bring to mind the great leap of faith that its founders, Andrew and Crystal Fetter, made almost 10 years ago when they

decided to initiate a community sports minis-try. These busy Corpus Christi parishioners were already juggling full-time jobs with raising their five sons when they felt called to provide a unique service to our area — a sports organiza-tion with the goal of positively influencing the lives of children.

It all started in 2011, when Andrew was asked to step in and coach one of his son’s T-ball teams. When football season started, his son’s team was again in need of a coach, and again during basketball season.

After Andrew coached for a few seasons, something seemed to click into place for the Fetters.

“It really happened organically,” Andrew says. “We just kind of formalized the way that I coach and how I take kids through the sea-son. My strengths are on the field with the kids, and Crystal’s strengths are communicating with parents and the administrative side of things.”

In the years since, the couple’s sports min-istry has grown by leaps and bounds. Last fall, UnFettered Athletics served 123 kids on 16 dif-ferent sports teams!

“We make a lot of large decisions in our life just knowing that God has put us here and this is what we’re supposed to be doing,” Crystal says. “Throughout the year, whenever it gets hard, it makes it easier to know that God put us here and will figure it out.”

UnFettered Athletics is not officially a Chris-tian organization, but the values it seeks to in-still in its youth participants are shared by the Catholic Church. Andrew refers to St. Francis’ famous quote about preaching the Gospel with-out words — this is what he and Crystal hope to accomplish each day by creating a sense of fellowship among coaches, players, and their families.

“We love the kids and love the families, but really we’re doing it because God asked us to,” Andrew says. “It’s for Him.”

Andrew and Crystal Fetter are the dynamic duo who created a values-based sports community through

UnFettered Athletics.

práctica de baloncesto con UnFettered Athle-tics podría recordar el gran salto de fe que sus fun-dadores, Andrew y Crystal Fetter, hicieron hace casi 10 años atras cuando decidieron iniciar un ministerio deportivo comunitario. Estos feligreses de Corpus Christi ya estaban batallando con traba-jos de tiempo completo con la crianza de sus cinco hijos cuando se sintieron llamados a brindar un servicio único a nuestra área: una organización de-portiva con el objetivo de influir positivamente en la vida de los niños.

Teaching Children to Live a Life of Stewardship

How old do you have to be to practice stewardship?Can a 5-year-old embrace stewardship? How

about a 10-year-old?Although there is no guideline to what the right

age is to begin to live a life of stewardship, God’s call certainly extends to each of His children — even the young ones.

It is especially important to show children that they are not too young to share their time, talent and treasure to help build God’s kingdom.

Sharing Your TimeA young child can share of his time in a variety

of ways appropriate to his ability. For example, dur-ing the day, a child can pray for a loved one that is hurt, or say prayers with his parents or siblings. He can participate in Mass each Sunday, and even take time from his day to thank God for a veteran who has served our country.

Spending time being virtuous — such as being pa-tient, generous and kind — is also a great example of sharing our time for love of God.

Sharing Your TalentUsing God-given talents to glorify God can also

be performed by both young and old. An elementary school-age child can easily clean her room or perform chores such as raking leaves, doing laundry or taking

care of pets. Making cards for people who are sick or who have had a death in the family are other concrete examples of being a faithful steward.

Even using our talents — such as playing a musi-cal instrument or football — to the best of our abilities to give God glory is an example of being a good steward.

Sharing Your TreasureAlthough children do not have the same type of

treasure to share as adults, instilling the importance of sharing finances is an important lesson.

If a child receives an allowance, he can return a portion of it to the Church in the collection basket. If he gets money for his birthday, he can give a small portion of it back to God in thanksgiving. Little ones can even share things like their Halloween candy with their sib-lings or friends as a way of demonstrating generosity.

The Most Important LessonAbove all, the most important lesson to teach our

children is why we share. We don’t share because we “have to.” We don’t share because our parents tell us to. We share our time, talent and treasure with God because we are thankful for the blessings He has giv-en us and we want to thank Him for His generosity.

Teaching these lessons at a young age will allow a lifetime of good stewardship to follow for even the youngest of God’s children.

God called Fr. Tan Tran home unexpectedly on Dec. 10. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our joy-filled priest.

Fr. Tan had a heart of a servant as he cared for residents in nine nursing homes in the Council Bluffs area. He brought joy to so many through the gift of his musical talent, and as he lived out his vocation as a priest for 26 years. He will be greatly missed.

Join us as we pray for Fr. Tan and his family; and spread the joy that he blessed us with each day.

“Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. And may the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

Enseñar a los Niños a Vivir Una Vida Corresponsal

¿Qué edad tienes que tener para practicar la corresponsabilidad?

¿Puede un niño de 5 años desarrollar la corres-ponsabilidad? ¿Qué tal un niño de 10 años?

Aunque no existe una directriz sobre cuál es la edad correcta para comenzar a vivir una vida de corresponsabilidad, el llamado de Dios ciertamente se extiende a cada uno de Sus hijos, incluso a los jóvenes.

Es especialmente importante mostrarles a los niños que no son demasiado pequeños para com-partir su tiempo, talento y tesoro para ayudar a construir el reino de Dios.

Compartiendo tu TiempoUn niño pequeño puede compartir su tiempo en

una variedad de formas apropiadas para su habi-lidad. Por ejemplo, durante el día, un niño puede rezar por un ser querido enfermo o rezar con sus padres o hermanos. Puede participar en misa to-dos los domingos e incluso tomarse un tiempo de su día para agradecer a Dios por un veterano que ha servido a nuestro país.

Pasar tiempo siendo virtuoso, como ser pacien-te, generoso y amable, es también un gran ejemplo de compartir nuestro tiempo por amor a Dios.

Compartiendo tu TalentoEl uso de los talentos dados por Dios para glo-

rificar a Dios también puede ser realizado por jó-venes y viejos. Un niño de primaria puede limpiar fácilmente su habitación o realizar tareas como rastrillar las hojas, lavar la ropa o cuidar a las mascotas. Hacer tarjetas para las personas que

están enfermas o que han muerto en la familia son otros ejemplos concretos de ser un mayordomo fiel.

Incluso usar nuestros talentos, como tocar un instrumento musical o fútbol americano, lo mejor que podamos para darle gloria a Dios es un ejem-plo de ser un buen administrador.

Compartiendo tu TesoroAunque los niños no tienen el mismo tipo de

tesoro para compartir que los adultos, inculcar la importancia de compartir las finanzas es una lec-ción importante.

Si un niño recibe un subsidio, puede devolver una porción a la Iglesia en la canasta de recolec-ción. Si recibe dinero para su cumpleaños, puede devolverle una pequeña porción a Dios en acción de gracias. Los pequeños incluso pueden compar-tir cosas como sus dulces de Halloween con sus hermanos o amigos como una forma de demostrar generosidad.

La Lección más ImportanteSobre todo, la lección más importante para en-

señar a nuestros hijos es por qué compartimos. No compartimos porque “tenemos que hacerlo”. No compartimos porque nuestros padres nos lo dicen. Compartimos nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro con Dios porque estamos agradecidos por las bendicio-nes que nos ha dado y queremos agradecerle por su generosidad.

Enseñar estas lecciones a una edad temprana permitirá que toda una vida de buena administra-ción siga incluso para los más pequeños de los hi-jos de Dios.

“We are each called to become more of the Body of Christ, to find new ways to live that out,” Fr. Tom says. “The new year, then, is a perfect time to embrace that identity more fully and to deepen our relationship with the Lord.”

So, as we each begin looking toward the fu-ture, Fr. Tom invites each of us to spend some time in quiet reflection asking ourselves, “How am I meant to become the Body of Christ to oth-ers this year?”

“This is truly a new year and a season of new beginnings for Corpus Christi,” Fr. Tom says. “I would encourage parishioners to think about what that means for them personally, to ask themselves honestly how they are being called to serve and grow.”
