KNOW THE ANGELS
Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit. Without being seen, they are present with you.
From The Pastor’s Desk what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm him down, the boy continues to scream furi-ously and kick the seats around him. Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man in the uniform of an Air Force General is seen slowly walking forward up the aisle. Stopping the flus-tered mother with an upraised hand, the white-haired, courtly, soft-spoken General leans down and, motion-ing toward his chest, whispers something into the boy's ear. Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes his mother's hand, and quietly fastens his seat belt. All the other passengers burst into spontaneous applause. As the General slowly makes his way back to his seat, one of the cabin attendants touches his sleeve. "Excuse me, General," she asks quietly, "but could I ask you what magic words you used on that little boy?" The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, "I showed him my pilot's wings, service stars, and battle ribbons, and explained that they entitle me to throw one passenger out the plane door on any flight I choose."
#4 - A man had been driving all night and by morn-ing was still far from his destination. He decided to stop at the next city he came to, and park somewhere quiet so he could get an hour or two of sleep. As luck would have it, the quiet place he chose hap-pened to be on one of the city's major jogging routes. No sooner had he settled back to snooze when there came a knocking on his window. He looked out and saw a jogger running in place. "Yes?" "Excuse me, sir," the jogger said, "do you have the time?" The man looked at the car clock and answered, "8:15". The jogger said thanks and left. The man settled back again, and was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window and another jogger. "Excuse me, sir, do you have the time?" "8:25!"
The jogger said thanks and left. Now the man could see other joggers passing by and he knew it was only a matter of time before another one disturbed him. To avoid the problem, he got out a pen and paper and put a sign in his window saying, "I do not know the time!" Once again he settled back to sleep. He was just dozing off when there was another knock on the win-dow. "Sir, sir? It's 8:45!." Fr. Murphy
Dear Parishioners,
This coming week the priests of the diocese will be on our annual retreat from Monday to Friday. We will be at Marywood Retreat Center in St. Johns, Florida. Be assured that we will have the masses covered dur-ing the week. Fr. Brian Eburn will be celebrating the weekday masses. In the meantime, I ask you to pray for the bishop and all the priests during this important time. Pray that we may more carefully reflect on our role as good and attentive shepherds of the flock.
Octoberfest tickets will be on sale next weekend before and after all the masses. It will take place on Saturday, October 27th @ 5 p.m. in the Marian Hall. You will have to purchase a meal ticket in order to join us in this event. Great food and entertainment. Beer and wine will be available as well. (And if you haven’t had the opportunity to see your pastor sing, this is the time!!!)
Also, we are still in great need of adorers for our weekly adoration in the chapel of the church. Please see the blurb in our bulletin concerning the hours that need coverage. If you cannot make your hour of ado-ration, please contact Deborah Harvey or the parish office to find a substitute.
And now some funnies:
#1 – Scoutmaster: “Well boys, did you do your good deed for the day?” Scout #1: “Yes, sir, we helped an old lady across the street.” Scoutmaster: “It took both of you?” Scout #2: “Yes, sir, she didn’t want to go.”
#2 - An attendant on a cross-country flight nervously announced: "I don't know how this happened, but we have 103 passengers aboard and only 40 dinners." When the passengers' muttering had died down, she continued, "Anyone who is kind enough to give up his meal so someone else can eat will receive free drinks for the length of the flight." Her next announcement came an hour later. "If anyone wants to change his mind, we still have 29 dinners available!"
#3 - As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by a 5-year-old boy who picks that moment to throw a wild temper tantrum. No matter

From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In an-cient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public educa-tion has been so attuned to other values that crea-tive solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobe-dience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children en-rolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by open-ing schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.
