History of Entertainment Industry in India
• Film - First film shown in Bombay - July 7, 1896, an agent who had brought equipment and films from France first showed his moving pictures in Bombay
• First silent film – Raja Harishchandra was shown in 1913, by Dadasaheb Phalke
• Television - First TV Broadcast – September 15, 1959 in Delhi with a small transmitter and a makeshift studio
• Radio - Radio broadcasting in India started in British India in 1923 with the Radio Club of Bombay. All India Radio (AIR) was established in 1936
Evolution of Corporatization Film Industry in India
• No Industry Status: Since the Hindi cinema didn’t have industry status, it was deprived of government subsidies and banks didn’t give credit. Hence a producer had to borrow money from private lenders usually at a high rate. A lot of black money was pumped into the system and there was often a nexus with the underworld
• Informal basis: • no documentation of contracts• Verbal agreement and mutual relationships• Underworld Nexus: • Failure to attain legitimate source of finance resulted in the Underworld getting involved in
the production of several films. • They financed the movies with the black money gained from extortion and crime and forced
the movies financed by them to be given prior preference.
