Introduction

Integrity provides insightful research and localised

consultancy services to organisations operating in

fragile and conflict-affected regions. We have a

strong track record of successfully enabling clients to

achieve their goals in these challenging environments.

Integrity prides itself on a rigorous methodological

approach and leads the debate on ethical research

and stakeholder engagement in conflict-affected

areas. We believe partnering with local organisations

leads to the best results and, where capacity is low,

we look to employ and train local people.

We are based in London, with offices in Juba,

Nairobi, Beirut and Islamabad, together with a

network of local partners in key geographies

throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East. We

have worked in more than 40 countries and have

particular expertise in: South Sudan, Democratic

Republic of Congo, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia,

Uganda, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen,

Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

What makes us stand out?

• Top quality research: We ensure that all our work is designed in a way that our clients have absolute confidence in basing their decisions on our findings.

• Local knowledge: Our teams of researchers are based in-country with access toextensive local networks, key communities, the right timing and knowledge.

• Conflict sensitivity: We are experienced in managing the particular sensitivities ofoperating in conflict-affected environments.

• Practical outputs: We turn research findings into practical strategies, tools andrecommendations for organisations to use.

• A positive legacy: We build skills and capacity among local researchers andinstitutions to support their development of successfully guiding clients through theenvironments they work in.

We believe that people have the right to participate in decisions that impact

them. This is especially important in fragile and conflict-affected environments,

where the exercise of rights is restricted, governance is weak, infrastructure is

limited and community relations are fraught.

We recognise that every client faces different challenges, and we are able to respond to a range of issues through our Stakeholder Engagement (SE) approach:

Stakeholder engagement (SE) covers a range of activities:

Information provision

Communication Dialogue

Consultation Collaboration

Partnership

Empowerment

through stakeholder mapping, network analysis, social impact assessments, perception surveys, benchmarking, baseline analysis

1. Understand thecontext...

through materiality assessment, issues mapping, risk analysis, development of policies and procedures, application of international standards

2. Develop astrategy...

by establishing governance and accountability mechanisms, utilising two-way communication technologies, establishing tracking systems, training and capacity building of staff, mediation

3. Engage withstakeholders...

through internal monitoring, grievance management, external review, stakeholder feedback, participatory monitoring

4. Evaluateperformance...

We practice stakeholder engagement from both demand and supply-side

perspectives:

On the Demand Side, we practice: empowering communities to engage in

dialogue with power holders; developing platforms for the citizen voice

to be represented; and taking forward alternative perspectives to decision

makers.

On the Supply Side we practice: supporting organisational strategy that

responds to stakeholder needs and interests; creating systems for power

holders to analyse stakeholder inputs; and creating systems for them to

respond and monitor their response.

Mapping CSR in the oil sector: CSR Policies and Practices of Oil Companies in South Sudan

Norwegian People’s Aid, South Sudan

Research and Analysis of the various CSR strategies of companies and consortia working in the energy sector in South Sudan.

Working with local researchers, Integrity conducted a comparative analysis of the presence and impact of oil producers and their respective CSR practices on local communities. The first research of its kind, the report approached the challenges of community-corporate relations from the perspective of the companies. Recommendations included the need for clarity over the respective responsibilities of the joint operating companies, companies, and local government, as well as the need for a multi-stakeholder dialogue on the impact of oil on communities.

Corporate Responsibility, Business Ethics and Human Rights AdvisoryCommunity Engagement Strategy Development

Oil and gas company, with a focus on the UK and Cameroon

Integrity developed the client’s approach, policy, standards and roadmap for responsible business performance. This involved reviewing best practice responsible business standards and engaging stakeholders across the company. We helped them to define and articulate what corporate responsibility meant for them and identified a unique leadership opportunity for them to pursue related to community engagement. It was essential that we built on existing processes, terminology and strategy to ensure buy-in from across the company. We also authored a guidance document on the company’s business ethics and developed a plan to embed them throughout the business, including a workshop for senior leaders. The work included advice on the company’s management of human rights issues and its external position on the UN Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.

Development of Indicators and Benchmarks for CSR to promote multi-stakeholder dialogue

UNDP, Albania

Integrity worked with UNDP to help establish and prioritise a national consensus on the measurement of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Albania in line with the UN Global Compact and the goals of the Albanian Ministry of Economy. The existence of a national system of indicators allows for continuous monitoring of CSR implementation in the country, as well as evaluating investments made by the government in creating an enabling CSR environment. Such a system also has the potential to guide and stimulate company CSR practices, serve as the basis for the National CSR awards and enable evaluation of progress of CSR practices at company level against objective criteria and provide state-level recognition and visibility to progressive CSR practices of companies.

Perception surveys, media monitoring and geo-marketing study

Telecommunications Company, South Sudan

Integrity is working with a telecommunications company to develop ongoing brand and media monitoring through regular perception surveys, street polls and longitudinal analysis across South Sudan. Through data collection and analysis, the project aims to build a deeper and more localised understanding of South Sudanese consumers that better enables the provision of goods and services to match local needs. The engagement builds on Integrity’s ability to mobilise research teams throughout South Sudan and will also seek to identify ways that the telecommunications company’s own platforms can support NGOs and other companies to meet the needs of South Sudanese.

Private sector engagement strategy development across three geographies

CARE Sri Lanka

Integrity assisted CARE Sri Lanka in the development of their private sector engagement (PSE) strategy to build on their long-term engagement with the tea sector in the pursuit of poverty alleviation and livelihoods development. Integrity supported CARE on finalising elements of their existing strategy and developing new partner-specific approaches that maximised impact. The process involved conducting interviews with staff and corporate partners, as well as holding a staff-training workshop.

CARE Caucasus, Georgia

Integrity assisted CARE in the Caucasus to build a private sector engagement strategy for the pursuit of partnerships and other engagements with companies in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The objective for the research was to provide CARE with sufficient information to focus objectives and define possible activities and potential partners, so that CARE could begin building their private sector engagement strategy.

CARE Bangladesh

CARE Bangladesh has one of the largest NGO programmes linking rural and urban poor to national and international supply chains in Asia. Under the objectives of CARE's Programme Partnership Agreement with DFID, Integrity conducted an assessment of two of CARE Bangladesh's major private sector interventions: 1) workforce engagement, literacy and health projects in the readymade garment sector, and 2) rural rug manufacturing units for export. In addition, we designed the coalescence of CARE Bangladesh's private sector engagement strategy.
