NEC GroupCorporate Philosophy
To be a leading global company leveraging the power of innovation torealize an information society friendly to humans and the earth
NEC strives through “C&C” to help advance societies worldwide towarddeepened mutual understanding and the fulfillment of human potential.
“To realize a better society by bringing people closer…”
With its origins in this desire of our founder, NEC’s history began in 1899.
Initially an importer of desk-stand telephones, we soon branched into the
domestic production of communications technologies such as telephone
switchboards. Our success laid the foundation for the growth of Japan’s
telephone network. In 1954, we turned to the development of oce
computers, focusing our resources on expanding this new and highly
promising field.
In 1977, we advocated the integration of computers and communications
(C&C). Our vision was realization of the world where anyone can talk
together anywhere and at any time, while actually seeing each other’s
faces. From the beginning, we also stressed the importance of a global
communications system in which all the world’s people are able to
participate. Striving towards its realization, we have contributed significantly
to the development of our present-day global information society.
Now the world faces a variety of problems, including climate change,
securing energy and food resources in the face of rapid population growth,
aging societies, economic inequality, and disaster mitigation and response.
Against this background, we are striving to realize an information society
that is both environmentally friendly and nurturing to its citizens. Based on
the concept that today “C&C” means the fusion of IT and networks, we seek
to make intensive use of information in order to solve regional and global
issues, creating a society in which everyone is able to lead a better life.
In all NEC’s long history, the desire expressed by our founder has not
changed: “To realize a better society by bringing people closer.” In this
ongoing quest, we will continue to be a social value innovator, working
alongside our customers to bring our vision to fruition.

Solving the fundamental issuesof our customers and society
NEC brings together and integrates technology and expertise to create
the ICT-enabled society of tomorrow.
We collaborate closely with partners and customers around the world,
orchestrating each project to ensure all its parts are fine-tuned to local needs.
Every day, our innovative solutions for society contribute to
greater safety, security, eciency and equality, and enable people to live brighter lives.
Societies everywhere are faced with formidable challenges, such as
safeguarding sustainable energy supplies, providing clean water, dealing with
population growth and demographic change, improving emergency response,
maintaining safety, and raising quality of life. To understand the nature of
these issues, which NEC classifies as megatrends, there is need for a new
standard of intuitive, integrated ICT (Informations and Communications
Technology) ̶one that makes possible the society of tomorrow.
For over 100 years, NEC has been at the leading edge of technology that
enriches people's lives. Today, as a major provider of ICT solutions for
society, we collaborate closely with partners and customers around the
world, bringing together sensors, computing, networking and analysis. We
apply this expertise to create active data solutions that predict, monitor,
and solve challenges, respond intelligently to adverse events, and turn
unseen information into actionable wisdom.
We carefully oversee each project, orchestrating it to ensure that all parts
work in harmony and are fine-tuned to resonate with local needs. We
match human and technological resources to ensure our solutions deliver
greater safety, security, eciency and equality̶four important values for
society̶and remain relevant during and beyond the transformation they
bring about. These are the foundations on which governments can build
prosperous communities and enterprises can innovate and grow, enabling
people to live brighter lives.
We summarize this approach in our business message: Orchestrating a
brighter world.

Seven themesfor promoting social value creation
When identifying and analyzing global trends in detail from the perspective
of promoting our Solutions for Society business, six megatrends become
apparent. These megatrends are deeply associated and linked with each
other. NEC has consequently established seven themes for social value
creation based on these six megatrends.
The seven themes are: (1) Sustainable Earth, (2) Safer Cities & Public Services,
(3) Lifeline Infrastructure, (4) Communications, (5) Industry Eco-System,
(6) Work Style, and (7) Quality of Life.
There are also three sources of value for using ICT to realize the four
values of “safety”, “security”, “eciency” and “equality.” These are “real
time”, “dynamic” and “remote.”
The NEC Group is committed to using its abundant ICT assets to promote
the creation of new social value based on these seven themes.
Megatrends and themes for socialvalue creation
Deconcentration of powerAs emerging countries and individuals have more influence, the world will get more decentralized and see a new power balance.
Growth in emerging countries and their new challengesRapid economic growth in emerging countries will, while their national power grows, cause new issues such as environmental concerns and resource shortage.
Diversified threats and needs for safety and securityBig changes in the world will generate various kinds of threats not only in the real world but also in a cyberspace and increase demand for safety and security.
Search for mature society modelsIn advanced countries, continued low birthrate, aging of the population and deterioration of facilities will press for reform of the current legal and social systems.1

Global population growth and rapid urbanization are severely impacting the environment. To counter this, we, as global citizens, must devise means to distribute limited resources such as energy, water and food more fairly and eciently, while shifting our focus to the development of renewable energy sources.
Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power have a lower impact on the environment, but their dependence on the weather can make it dicult to maintain power grid stability and control electricity quality. Faced with these challenges, Enel Distribuzione, the largest distributor of electricity in Italy, chose NEC to install an energy storage system that uses lithium-ion batteries. NEC's solution allowed Enel to verify that it could supply stable, high-quality electricity from a grid that connects to many dierent renewable energy sources while maintaining a frequency and/or voltage within the proper range. The system also provides backup power in case of emergency. Moving forward, Enel plans t o i n t e g r a t e t h i s s y s t e m i n t o i t s n e x t - g e n e r a t i o n s m a r t g r i d infrastructure encompassing smart meters for home, oce and factory use, big data analysis, and access to interactive and real-time electricity demand information through the use of innovative IT systems.
Through projects like this one, NEC aims to create new lifestyles that allow countries and companies to maintain their cultural identity while promoting growth and prosperity that is in harmony with the earth’s environment.
Establish a sustainable platform for activities by utilizing limited
resources eectively and taking measures to prevent damage to
the global environment in order to coexist with the Earth.

Innovative administrative services are providing a platform for urban development, but the rapid globalization of cities brings with it dangers that threaten the safety of urban residents. Personal security for city residents as well as visitors is fundamental if cities are to develop into vibrant communities. For industry, it is the foundation on which every successful endeavor is built.
There is growing demand in Argentina today for the swift provision of more stable economic and social infrastructure, and the government, private organizations, and business enterprises are pushing ahead with the improvement of infrastructure, making eorts at the same time to ensure that every citizen is able to feel secure. NEC’s involvement in these initiatives includes the use of its extensive experience in the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects to participate in the creation of systems that contribute to public safety. In Buenos Aires and the surrounding area, NEC has responded to local needs for risk management by integrating street cameras, wireless video networks, monitoring centers and data storage facilities into a single comprehensive safety suite. Put in place quickly and eciently, this system is a major step towards enabling citizens to live with peace of mind, freely pursuing their daily activities as they seek to realize their dreams and achieve their full potential.
The safety and security of residents is vital if communities are to gain confidence, take pride in themselves, and grow. NEC will continue to contribute to the creation of a society where everyone has access to ecient administrative services that provide the security they need to thrive. Our mission is to use our strength in infrastructure solutions to work with residents and create administrative service platforms that form the bedrock of communities overflowing with civic pride.

Personal security for urban residents as well as visitors is fundamental if cities are to develop into vibrant communities. For industry, it is the foundation on which every successful endeavor is built.
Meeting this challenge are bold, forward-thinking initiatives in the world’s growing economies: places such as Brazil, where one of the new venues for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a stadium and its surrounding complex near Recife, Pernambuco, is designed to be a next generation city, providing a self-sustainable environment after the event. In cooperation with the Arena Pernambuco Consortium, NEC uses its expertise in advanced ICT to propose an ecient urban infrastructure, including cloud computing to support various corporate and public services, intelligent energy systems, and comprehensive ICT provision that can accommodate large scale events.
NEC actively participates in projects to support global sports events like this one. With the expertise gained though such projects, NEC is contributing to the creation of safe, secure and vibrant city communities that reflect local cultures while promoting growth and prosperity.

The relentless advance of global urbanization has brought about a rapid increase in the complexity and diversity of urban lifestyles. In addition to basic energy resources such as water, electricity, and gas, urban populations require a continuous supply of commodities to meet their lifestyle needs. Infrastructures are required that can guarantee the permanent stability of these lifelines.
At Tokyo Station, East Japan Railway Company (JR EAST) used to operate several separate networks to manage train service reporting, security camera footage, and other data dependent services. This made managing their operations complicated and time-consuming, and provided an obstacle to introducing new services. JR EAST addressed this issue by adopting NEC’s common station network solution that utilizes SDN (Software-Defined Networking) technology. Tokyo Station now provides its customers with a smart wireless LAN environment which oers a host of real-time services, from train delay alerts to the availability of luggage lockers. Everyone who uses Tokyo Station—sta and customers alike—can now access the station’s information services in a timely, convenient and fair manner.

Infrastructures are required that can guarantee the permanent stability of these lifelines.
Expressways are vital infrastructure that support lifestyles and industry, and must provide 100% safety and reliability for their users. Expressway trac control systems need to be closely linked and highly responsive. West Nippon Expressway Company Limited (NEXCO-West), responsible for expressways in Western Japan, opted to introduce NEC’s software-defined networking (SDN) solution to construct a wide area backbone network for its trac control centers in the Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions that would solve the problem of network dierences between regions. These four regional trac control centers now share a network linking multiple routes between 45 trac control centers and expressway oces within a 4,000km-wide area, through which information from thousands of sensors lining the expressways can be transmitted. In the event of a disaster, the company can instantly transfer control functions from trac control centers in aected areas to neighboring centers. This solution has enabled NEXCO-West to back up all trac control center functions, easily and flexibly construct, operate, and maintain systems, and implement rapid recovery in the event of an emergency, allowing the company to maintain uninterrupted expressway services in times of disaster. NEXCO-West is now considering using SDN in other projects, including the creation of new services for expressway users.

Building a platform for information and communications to support the widespread distribution
of information and knowledge—a facility that is becoming even more essential as society advances.
Advanced and equal connection between people, things, and information: To support the social infrastructure of the future, a paradigm shift in information and telecommunication is essential. Optical submarine cable systems in the Asia Pacific region are utilizing cutting-edge information and communications technologies to bridge traditional boundaries between people. With these technologies, we can connect the thoughts and actions of people throughout the world and share in the benefits of these connections.
In the fast-growing Asian region, it is vital that countries can communicate quickly and eectively. This requires fast and highly reliable communication infrastructure to connect countries and communities. The NEC Group has been involved in a project to install approximately 9,000 kilometers of submarine cables in the Asia Pacific region. Connecting Japan, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Brunei and Singapore, these large-capacity cables will increase bandwidth and improve our ability to exchange information with people all over the world.
NEC works together with people from dierent countries and regions so that everyone can realize the potential of these kinds of information and communications technology assets. Our aim is to oer opportunities for people and enterprises around the globe to communicate in order to realize an ecient and fair distribution of information.

The tie between manufacturing and the Internet is growing stronger, and the hedge between industries is diminishing as seen in mechanized agriculture. Employment of people irrespective of age or gender and the introduction of robots in manufacturing will flourish in countries with declining productive populations. Fresh ideas sprouting from issues in emerging economies are fru it ing into reverse innovat ion. Work env i ronments and indust r ia l s t ructures a re a lso t ransforming significantly.
One of the largest retail chains in the world, 7-Eleven, Inc., is successful because it constantly monitors and responds to customers’ needs. NEC serves as a strategic partner to 7-Eleven, providing store-centric solutions that empower the company in a way that minimizes labor, energy and transportation costs while optimizing product assortment and just-in-time delivery.
NEC supports ecient, flexible SCM development through analysis and prediction based on digital information, and is dedicated to helping enterprises utilize digital platforms to form a safe and highly ecient industry eco-system.

In Japan and other countries that are facing a “population onus,” the decrease in the productive working population is a challenge to be overcome. We are entering an age where co-creation with people from diverse backgrounds leads to a competitive edge for countries, regions, and organizations.
NEC is part of a joint project to use ICT to quantify farming techniques so that farmers can better control production, produce high-quality crops, and develop new farming methods. The system—Agricultural ICT Cloud Service—was developed by NEC, the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh) and Nepon Inc., Japan’ s largest manufacturer of heating equipment for agricultural use. With this new tool, farmers have access to a wide range of numerical data about their production environments, enabling more accurate management that does not rely on instinct or experience and leading to a higher production level throughout the entire farming area.
NEC provides a safe and secure location-free ICT environment that supports a broad range of dierent working styles and designs a human resource network for flexible employment of diverse workers based on an ICT utilization perspective. NEC promotes the utilization of ICT that generates new knowledge from cooperative work and creates quality careers and employment.

Building a Diverse and Fair Society that Promotes Vibrant
Lifestyles based on Better Education and Health
ICT is no longer simply a means of interconnecting the world’ s businesses. It has become an essential infrastructure in our everyday lives. While connected communities enjoy the dramatic advancement ICT can bring in areas as diverse as education, health care and agriculture, the risk is that the technology causes an information gap that disadvantages people who do not have access. To address this issue, NEC is participating in Kioscos Vive Digital, a project instigated by the Colombian Ministry of Information Technology and Communications to narrow the country’s digital divide. To date, NEC has created ICT Rooms that provide satellite communications in 648 schools, community centers and other such community spaces in Colombia. The initiative enables local people to access the latest information in areas where this had been conventionally dicult—even deep in the Amazon rainforest and high in the Andes mountains. In addition, we are showing communities how ICT can help them, for example through e-learning, and demonstrating how they can put their skills to practical use. We believe that the development of ICT environments will improve people’s lives, particularly regarding education and health care, and boost local employment.
Colombia is a good example of how positive eect ICT can have. All around the world, providing young people with the opportunity to study in good health will contribute to regional and national independence and economic growth. By providing ICT in these communities, we unlock knowledge that goes beyond the boundaries of time, place and language to nurture inquisitive minds in children who will lead the next generation, and promote health maintenance and preventive care. In this and many other ways, NEC aims to bring safety and security to people’s lives, and create an ecient and more equal society.

NEC is focusing on Asia where the levels of
advancement and economic growth are remarkable,
the market demand is high, and our local aliates
are strong.
On average, countries throughout Asia are expected
to achieve strong annual GDP growth for the
foreseeable future. Our target is to drive business
expansion by capturing demand in sectors that
include safety and energy, which will be driven by
urbanization. In highly developed countries, we will
proceed with the transformation from our former
product export business model to one which is
suited to new structural changes.
NEC’s promotion of “locally-led” business is another
eort to realize “Solutions for Society.” We seek to
elevate our current system to another level, creating
a system that enables NEC to accurately grasp each

region is independent and contributing to the NEC
Group’s mutual development of strengths.
NEC’s Global Safety Division, establ ished in
Singapore in April 2013, is an advanced model of
this system. This division plays the role of “control
