● Benesse Group’s Corporate Philosophy

54

Helping our customers to achieve well-being throughout their lives.

Representative Director, President and CEO of Benesse Holdings, Inc.Tamotsu Adachi

The Benesse Group is guided by a corporate philosophy of "Benesse = Well-Being." We conduct business in the fields

of domestic and global education, senior nursing care and childcare, and gives our customers the support to make the

best lifestyle choices – the ones that lead to the long-term betterment of their lives. In the 60 plus years since our

founding in 1955, we have accumulated knowledge in the fields of education and senior nursing care and have

provided such services by developing close ties to our customers.

Japan is currently facing a time of significant change. The educational system is now expected to prepare the children

of the 21st century to live and succeed in a society with an uncertain and challenging future. It should therefore

provide more than just knowledge and skill sets; it should also develop the ability to think, make decisions, express

oneself, and learn independently. Japanese society will increasingly need to rely on people with the ability and skills to

work in a global business environment, and we hope to be an essential part of this development. Furthermore, the

rapidly declining birthrate and aging population is increasing the awareness and importance of issues such as support

for raising children and the state of nursing care and assistance for seniors.

In this environment, in fiscal 2018, the Benesse Group has embarked on its five-year New Medium-Term Management

Plan titled, “Transform and Grow Benesse 2022.” Under the slogan “Transform and Grow,” we are planning to

strengthen our management, and by developing existing businesses and expanding into new areas of business

through M&A, we are pursuing the next growth phase.

In the Domestic Education field, we will strive to leverage the combined power of our School & Teacher Support,

Correspondence Course, and Cram School / Classroom businesses to create a competitive advantage and expand the

business ahead of the largest post-war reform of Japan’ s education and entrance exam systems. In the Global

Education business, we will reach out to more countries by strengthening global coordination in our product and

marketing strategies. In the Nursing Care and Childcare areas, we will aim for stable growth while improving and

increasing service quality so that every customer can live each day in his or her own way. In addition, Berlitz

Corporation will drive forward reforms under the strong leadership of its new CEO.

In addition, by utilizing M&As, we will strengthen the competitive advantages of our existing businesses and create a

third business pillar outside of education and senior nursing care ahead of fiscal 2022 with the aim to achieve further

growth of the overall Group. We will also make proactive use of digital technology and AI to increase the unique value

that we offer in education and senior nursing care.

It is our employees who support our growth toward realizing each business strategy. By putting our company

philosophy into practice and creating an environment where employees can contribute their talents, we will enhance

the Group’s competitive edge.

The Benesse Group, as a leading company in education and senior nursing care, is dedicated to offering services that

improve people’s lives and continues to take on the challenge of being a corporate group that is both supported by and

is essential to its customers, communities and society.

Elementary school is an important time for students to develop their learning foundations. By enabling them to experience the joy of understanding, we help children become more motivated. As they become busy with study and school club activities, we help junior high school students find the way to qualify for the senior high school of their choice using their own individual learning style. We also help senior high school students to continue progressing towards their own futures, through university entrance examinations, overseas study, vocational schools, and so forth.

For people who are spreading their wings

In 2017, an estimated 941,000 babies were born in Japan. The figure marked an even faster decline in the number ofchi ldren, dropping below one mil l ion. In addit ion, the environment for pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing has been changing dramatically of late, with more people g e t t i n g m a r r i e d a t a l a te r a g e a n d a n i n c re a s e i n two-career households. The Tamahiyo brand is designed to support babies and the i r moms and d ads th rough the on l ine shopp ing business and provision of information via publications like magazines, books, websites, and more.

Declining Birthrate in Japan

With the increase in two-career households, a problem has emerged with children in urban areas in particular being placed on waiting lists due to lack of available places at childcare facilities. In April 2015, the Japanese government establ ished the Comprehensive Suppor t System for Children and Child-rearing. It sets out to enhance both the quality and quantity of early-childhood education, childcare, parenting support, and so forth. Benesse Style Care operates licensed childcare centers rooted in the community, primarily in the Tokyo metropolitan area, based on the concept of creating facilities where employees would like their kids to go.

Childcare Waiting ListsJapan’ s revised curriculum guidelines to be fully implemented for elementary schools from fiscal 2020 call for better classes which realize independent and interactive deep learning to give children the skills they need to live in an age of dramatic change. With education services including Shinkenzemi, Benesse is advancing research and development on qualities and capabilities called for in the revised curriculum. Examples inc lude knowledge and sk i l ls; think ing, decision -making, and expressive capabilities; and motivation to learn and humanity. Benesse also provides educational materials and services tailored to customers.

Active LearningThe new curriculum guidelines include making English language a subject from fifth grade and strengthening instruction in the four skills/five domains of the English language (listening, reading, speaking/ interaction and expression, writing). The Benesse Group will support English language education reform both at home and at school with services like Challenge English, which enables children to learn the four English language skills at home according to their English language experience, Online Speaking, which enables them to have direct, individual conversations with native English speaking teachers, and the Global Test of English Communication (GTEC), which enables them to measure their ongoing progress in English language communication in terms of the four skills.

We also support for overseas study, help matching up university students seeking jobs with companies that are hiring, and language education for working adults. We strongly encourage children and working adults’ motivation to learn.

We utilize media such as magazines and websites to deliver a wealth of information on home life, living with pets, and other topics, as well as to form communities.

For people who are spreading their wingsFor people who are spreading their wings

About 20 million dogs and cats live in households in Japan, which is higher than the population of children aged up to 15.Further, research has been released showing that having pets is beneficial for children’s education, marital relationships, longevity, and so on. It is fair to say pets now are a member of the family. Through our DOG’ S HEART and CAT’ S HEART website and magazine operations, we are working to raise the quality of life for households with pets.

Life with Pets

Japan’ s population is aging faster each year, with the ratio of people aged 65 or older (aging rate) at 27.7% as of September 2017.Benesse Style Care delivers an array of services focused on nursing care that enables people to keep leading lives suited to them in a familiar area. One example is housing for seniors, primarily in urban residential areas.

Aging PopulationIn fiscal 2020, the National Center Test for University Admissions is scheduled to be replaced with a new standardized university entrance exam. The aim is to shift to a test that can evaluate thinking, decision-making, and expressive capabilities, in addition to knowledge and skills. At the Benesse Educational Research and Development Institute, we are compiling information and advancing assessment R&D to prepare for projected future reforms in university entrance exams by analyzing various data and predicting future trends. In addition, we will help schools to handle university entrance exam reforms by providing school-oriented products and services such as GTEC, which tests the four English skills.

University Entrance ExaminationReforms

Currently, local governments are implementing their own distinctive educational policies, including integrating elementary and junior high schools and employing English language education and digital technologies in the classroom. To develop and assess the qualities and competencies targeted in the new curriculum guidelines, utilizing information and communication technology (ICT) in particular will gain importance moving ahead. The Classi service supplements school-based and independent learning. Offered via smartphones and tablets, providing support to teachers with their classes and student instruction, and to students with their studies at over 1,800 schools nationwide.

CSR at Benesse

Creating New Social Value Originating from “Benesse = Well-Being”

● Initiatives to solve social issues using business resources ● Helping children learn via the Benesse Foundation for Children

● Benesse Art Site Naoshima

The Effort Prize Donation program allows Shikenzemi enrollees to donate Effort Prize Points, which they receive after completing and submitting a task in their studies, to support initiatives for children of the same generation facing difficulties. The program started with the recovery from the Great East Japan Ea r thquake and i s now invo l ved in p romot ing understanding of social issues, such as providing support for children battling serious illnesses, and creat ing oppor tunit ies to par t ic ipate in suppor t activities. In fiscal 2017, the program donated around 2.1million yen.

Benesse Holdings engages in CSR initiatives based on the concept of “Benesse = Well-Being.” Key activities include solving social issues through business operations, and helping to forge sound communities through education, culture, and art as well as support children’s learning via relevant foundations.

From the Naoshima Bath “I♥湯” (I Love YU) operated in collaboration with local residents flows an endless stream of happy faces from interaction with guests.

In 1985, Tetsuhiko Fukutake, the founder of Fukutake Publishing (now Benesse Holdings) decided to develop the island town of Naoshima. The v ision was real ized by Soichiro Fukutake, then president of Fukutake Publishing (currently honorary advisor of Benesse Holdings). As a result of their efforts, Naoshima International Camp opened in 1989 as a campground for kids and island visitors.

We also provide periodic reports to Shinkenzemi enrollees. An excerpt from a report in an informative magazine for junior high school course enrollees is shown in the photo to the right. Donations are used in support activities run by the Benesse Foundation for Children.

In the Kurukuru Recycle program, we collect materials for recycling in boxes placed at Shimaj iro concer t events. Since its start in fiscal 2010, the program has collected 12 tons of educational materials and toys. (As of the end of fiscal 2017)

Naoshima International Camp and Benesse House open the doors to the island

In 1998, Benesse Art Site Naoshima initiated a project to reconvert old houses into art spaces in the main residential area of the town. The project expanded the area for exhibiting artwork on the island while also creating opportunities through contemporary art for local residents to interact with people visiting the island.

Bringing contemporary art to the local community

Benesse Art Site Naoshima expanded its network of museums to other islands, opening the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum on the island of Inujima in 2008, and the Teshima Art Museum on the island of Teshima in 2010.

Expanding facilities with other island communities

In 2010, the first Setouchi Triennale international contemporary art festival was held on seven islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The festival was staged again in 2013 and 2016 in even more locations, attracting about one million visitors each time. In the year 2019, the fourth festival is scheduled to be held.

From the Seto Inland Sea to the world

Within its products and services, Benesse Corporation provides participatory-type environmental education programs tailored to children’ s development stages and conducts activities designed to foster children’s interest in the envi-ronment. For example, in Kodomo Challenge, we promote an environmental education program called Kurukuru Recycle for recycling educational materials and toys after Children have finished using them.

Benesse Foundation for Children develops and runs the Sound and Light Zoo workshop for children with developmental disabilities and their parents together with Tokyo University of the Arts Center of Innovation (COI), which promotes research and development through the combination of the arts and academia. The zoo’s unique content comprises images of the children’s paper craft creations presented with music that evokes animals in a program designed to stimulate the senses of the participants. After holding the program twice on campus, in fiscal 2017 it was exhibited at an outside venue in Yokohama. The event will now be promoted in various regions and follow-up programs provided to parents and guardians. We also expect to build a model for ongoing support in the community. The Benesse Group’ s business areas include education and childcare, and we will continue to contribute to the creation of a completely new problem resolution model for children in cooperation with schools, NPOs, experts, and various other parties through our support for the Benesse Foundation for Children.

Benesse H o ld ings , I nc . , and the Fuku t ake Foundation have been working together for over 30 years to develop communities with a focus on art through projects and activities led by Benesse Art Site Naoshima.T he a r t work exh ib i ted a t Benesse A r t S i te Naoshima has been created to take advantage of special ly designed buildings and the pr ist ine backdrop of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. Artwork is not only exhibited inside buildings, but also displayed outside in natural spaces, creating settings that are unique to the island of Naoshima. This allows visitors to appreciate the meaning of art on an even deeper level. Benesse Holdings and the Fukutake Foundation aim to offer opportunities for people to contemplate well-being by encountering art in that way, as well as by experiencing nature and meeting the island’s residents. Activities mainly based on the island of Naoshima to develop the community through art eventually led to the establishment of an international contemporary art festival called the Setouchi Triennale. This process is being promoted outside Japan as the Naoshima Method. Looking ahead, Benesse Art Site Naoshima intends to continue enhancing community life through art whi le spread ing the message of Benesse’ s approach to well-being around the world.
